Farmland could be lost to First Nation reserves: Mayor Delta Council is concerned that federal changes to a policy governing Indian Reserve lands in Canada will give First Nations broad and sweeping powers to take land away from farmers and the municipality. “Any Indian Band throughout British Columbia could simply come and buy 125 acres of the best farmland anywhere in Delta and could proceed to develop into industry and commerce,” said Delta mayor Lois Jackson. ❙ See story, A3

Do you have time to volunteer and are looking for a flexible and fulfilling position within your own community? Delta Hospice volunteers offer meaningful support to Delta residents and families living with a diagnosis of a life threatening illness, advanced illness, or loss. After completing a comprehensive training and education program, volunteers can work at the Harold and Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care, at the Irene Thomas Hospice, in hospitals, in homes, and in care facilities. Hospice volunteers are important members of the health care team and contribute their skills, life experiences and caring to help improve the well-being and quality of life of those who are suffering. The Delta Hospice Society will be offering a volunteer training session this fall at the Centre for Supportive Care, from Sept. 16 to Oct. 24. Sessions will be Monday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon. There are a variety of presenters throughout the 30hour training program, including health care professionals, clients, volunteers and hospice staff. The topics include listening and communication skills, pain and comfort care, living with dying, spirituality, self care, grief and loss and a volunteer panel who present their experiences in the many different areas of service. If you are interested in becoming a trained Delta Hospice volunteer, please call our Reception at 604948-0660 to book a pre-course interview with Coordinator of Volunteers Chris Colero. This meeting will give participants a clear understanding of the course and the expected commitments. For information regarding volunteering at the Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe, please call the Centre at 604-948-0660, ext 333 and leave a message. You will be contacted by the Cottage Coordinator of Volunteers Sandy Schmidt.

Delta Gymnastics will give a nod to the grace, flexibility and strength of circus artists with a new class this fall. Nicola Poupard will be introducing students to aerial acrobatics, skills she learned from a former gymnastics coach who was with a circus in Russia. ❙ See story, A17
