“We put a specific cap on it based on the layout of the course here and what we were going to be able to do for the first time in a new venue and we are going to end up getting more than that next year,” said McGonigal.

Registration opened the day after the Whistler race, as it did in Penticton, and McGonigal said it was a flurry of activity.

“We had huge lines of people signing up and we are anticipating on selling out the event for 2014,” said McGonigal, The lineups and buzz at ground zero of Challenge Penticton as registration opened on Monday were small.

Haynes said she also didn’t have exact numbers on 2014 registration because it is also available online, but added “a few hundred as of this point right now.”

Despite low participant numbers, Challenge Penticton organizers and athletes believe it will only continue to grow.

“I just love the course here. I wanted to support the change and if nobody supports the local races they won’t happen,” said pro athlete Jen Annett of Penticton. “This race is going to get big and I know it. They did an amazing job.”

Challenge Family CEO Felix Walschöfer, who announced at the volunteer and athlete banquet on Monday the company will be unveiling a U.S. race date in September, said he heard nothing but positive things about Sunday’s race in Penticton.

“I’m absolutely thrilled, absolutely thrilled. Really good crowd and I had a really good feeling. I was at every aid station (Sunday) to thank every volunteer myself and it was a very, very positive feeling and the athletes were loving it. Very, very happy,” he said.

Challenge Penticton said they had about 1,350 athletes registered with some noshows and others not finishing on Sunday.

Barb Haynes, general manager for Challenge Penticton, said 571 individuals completed the course on Sunday, along with 162 relay teams (486 athletes).

In comparison, Ironman Canada held its first race outside of Penticton in three decades. Their registration was

that point where there is going to be massive lineups, but we also processed them really fast so you don’t see that same volume,” said Haynes.

“We will be back to where we want to be but we just need to rebuild and I knew we needed to deliver a stellar event in order to do that. That is what we just did.”

Haynes also praised the volunteers who gave their time to the event and the athletes.

“Once again, as with every event that happens in this community, the volunteers were outstanding and have made us proud.

Everything I have heard from athletes has been absolutely stellar.”

Already, pro athlete Chris McCormack told Haynes he will be back.

McCormack was in second place until he had to drop out.

Those signing up for next year’s swimbike-run event on Monday were also happy with how the inaugural race went down.

Luke Fletcher, originally from England and now living in Nanaimo, was in good spirits having just completed his first long distance triathlon.

He easily made his way through the Challenge Penticton registration tent at Gyro Park on Monday morning about a half hour after it opened to sign up for next year.

Fletcher said a decision on whether or not to compete in Ironman Canada, which is moving up its race date to July 27 in 2014, was not one he had to put a lot of thought into.

“Whistler didn’t really appeal to us,” he said.“This was a brilliantly organized event so we want to come back,” he said.

When Lynn Constantinoff stepped off her RV after the long trip from Saskatchewan to volunteer at last year’s Penticton Ironman Canada race to guarantee her a spot in 2013, she was shocked to find out it was not returning.

“When I heard about all the politics and everything behind it, I was pro-Challenge. I also like the idea of staggered starts and the idea of the race being about the participants and the community getting involved. It was also well organized,” said Constantinoff, who finished fifth overall in her age category.

Six-time Penticton triathlon course finisher Lazelle De Ridder from Lac La Biche, Alta. said it is the beauty of the city that brings her back each year and not the race organizer. She too signed up for next year’s Challenge.

“I do love the Penticton spectators too. I have been coming here for 10 years and am loyal to Penticton,” said De Ridder.

“Overall it went really well but I missed the buzz of all the athletes. I think it will just take time to grow.”

Albas running in Summerland riding in 2015 Steve Kidd

Come the next federal election, MP Dan Albas will no longer be running in a riding that includes his home town.

Despite the best efforts of representatives of Penticton and Summerland, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission has decided to draw a border between the two closely connected communities, creating two new ridings when the changes come into effect during the 2015 federal election.

“This is very difficult for me. My riding largely stays the same with the exception that Penticton has, in essence, been removed … with Princeton and Keremeos added in along with parts of Kelowna,” said Albas, who announced this week that he has decided not to run in the South Okanagan - West Kootenay riding.

“I have spent the past few years becoming familiar with many important community issues as well as building relationships with community leaders, the vast majority of whom will remain within the new riding of Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola,” Albas wrote in his weekly report.

“Given the importance of knowing local challenges and the need to build strong community relationships to help resolve them, representing a familiar riding and working with community leaders you know, is , in my view, the way an MP can be most effective.”

Though the new ridings are two years away and have yet to be approved by Parliament, Albas said there is little likelihood there will be changes.

When the commission visited Penticton in 2012, representatives from both communities expressed concern that separating the two cities

would cleave the many ties and shared services between them.

“The part that troubles me is why were we asked for our opinion in the first place if no one was going to listen? I certainly don’t feel as if we were listened to,” said Summerland Mayor Janice Perrino. “We spent the time preparing, and obviously they made a decision, so that is a done deal. I think it is shortsighted to keep us away from our regional district, school boards, transit, the list is endless.”

The riding boundary still splits the communities, though the border has been redrawn to include Apex with Penticton, and Keremeos now joins Summerland in the Central Okanagan - Similkameen - Nicola riding. On the eastern side of the riding, Kaslo has been removed and Nakusp added.

Perrino doesn’t object to her community being in a riding with Similkameen and Nicola communities, but notes her community has closer ties with Penticton, their closest neighbour and population centre for the South Okanagan.

“We share everything with Penticton, and in fact, many of our citizens live in Summerland and work in Penticton, including myself. It’s just that we don’t have the major player at the table. That, for me, just seems ludicrous,” said Perrino.

“It just feels very strange that we are now going to have to do everything through two MPs. And depending on where the other MP lives, this could be very complicated.

“If they are in the Kootenays, when the major centre in Penticton, this is going to be very interesting.”

said Albas, noting that the commission, both here and in other communities, heard strong cases against the proposed ridings.

Deputy mayor Helena Konanz sees the planned changes to the riding as a challenge.

“I am not too worried about it. Maybe because of those two different MPs, Summerland and Penticton will start working more together because we know we are going to have to show as a joint force,” said Konanz, adding that many communities find themselves in different ridings than their neighbours.

Albas agrees there will always be some level of disappointment, but said greater effort could have been made to recognize the balance be-

tween the larger urban areas and the less densely populated rural regions.

“From attending the public information sessions, it’s clear the commission really didn’t listen to concerns from many of the communities involved,” said Albas.

He feels the primary focus shouldn’t be on the number of people in a riding, but the accessibility of the MP. “I know there are a lot of numbers that go into this, but to me, the bottom line, that’s what needs to happen,” he said. “In this case, the public hearings had some very good input along those same lines. Unfortunately, they were ignored.”

Second effort earns Penticton woman a B.C. ambassador crown Joe Fries

You could hardly go to a community event this past year without seeing Camelia Vokey.

The 19-year-old Penticton woman made a point of making appearances whenever possible in the lead up to the B.C. Ambassadors pageant earlier this month in Merritt.

“As candidacy we are encouraged — it’s not mandatory, but we are encouraged — to be out in the community, and it’s something I enjoy doing, so I wanted to attend every event that I could possibly attend,” she explained.

Vokey’s persistence paid off, and she was one of three ambassadors crowned.

“I’m just so excited for the year to come.

“I’m so excited to be out in the community and going around doing things at a higher level this time,” she said.

Eleven women were vying for one of three ambassador crowns.

They were judged on public speaking, B.C. knowledge and talents.

Vokey, a Miss Penticton princess in 2010-11, was unsuccessful last year in her first try in the B.C. Ambassador contest.

But Vokey wasn’t giving up so easily. She opted to re-enter to aid her recovery from injuries she sustained in a September 2012 car accident.

For the next year, she and the two other ambassadors will travel the province to visit fairs and pageants, “promoting the mandate of motivation, education and self-esteem,” Vokey said.

One of the outgoing ambassadors,

Acacia Schmietenknop, told the Merritt Herald she attended 17 community pageants and 120 community events in her hometown of Kamloops during her reign.

“You only get one opportunity to do this, so you might as well make the most of it while you have the chance,” Schmietenknop said.

Along with the crown, Vokey also earned enough scholarship money to pay for her third year of human kinetics studies at UBC-Okanagan.

First, though, she’s hosting a community event of her own on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Victory Church in Penticton to reprise the speeches and talent performances she put on at the pageant.

There will also be a raffle and silent auction to help raise money for her upcoming travels.

Fortis looking for site to build dam on Similkameen Joe Fries

Inaccurate newspaper advertisements have generated fresh concern about a possible hydroelectric dam on the Similkameen River.

According to notices placed in three Similkameen newspapers over a two-week period this summer, Fortis Inc. intends to apply for disposition of Crown land on the river for “industrial purposes.”

However, a B.C. government official said the company has only applied for an investigative-use permit that would allow it to do unobtrusive studies.

“Normally, we wouldn’t advertise this.

It was a bit of a mistake because there’s nothing invasive about it.

They’re not out there cutting trees or digging dirt or anything like that,” said Peter Lishman, regional authorizations director for the

Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

“We’ve responded to probably 25 different organizations already that are concerned, and that’s understandable,” he said.

The ads were designed by B.C. government staff.

Although the public comment period on the permit application closed Aug. 23, Lishman said if Fortis Inc. does eventually apply

to lease Crown land on the Similkameen, a “lengthy public process” would be triggered, either through his ministry or the B.C Environmental Assessment Office. Lishman expects to decide on the investigate-use permit within a month.

“There’s probably no reason why we wouldn’t approve it,” he added, “because, as I say, they’re just gathering information.”

The only publicly available information on the project is a set of three maps on a government database. The maps show the proposed dam site and reservoir near the Copper Mountain Mine about 15 kilometres upstream of Princeton.

Sulentich said the process could take two years, during which time the company would also conduct information sessions and seek community input, and more details are expected to be released next week.

Brad Hope, the area director for the Regional District of OkanaganSimilkameen, said Fortis Inc. has done a poor job explaining its plan for the site.

“People need to have a chance to look at it,

and when they don’t put out the facts as they really are, it makes people wonder,” he said.

Hope needs more information before he takes a position on the dam.

“But I think if Fortis wants to be successful, they’re going to have to keep the public informed all the way along,” he added, “and there’s a lot of people looking at it.”

Among them is Peter Wood, terrestrial campaigns director for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.

He saw the flawed newspaper advertisements and contacted the government for clarification.

“If this is the case, they’re proposing a ... dam on one of the last

remaining wild rivers in southwestern B.C.,” Wood said.

“You’d better believe there’s going to be some people interested in talking about it.”

CPAWS already has some “significant concerns” based on the few details it has about the dam, Wood said, and is also worried about the integrity of the regulatory process. Hope said the possibility of a dam at the site was floated in the 1990s by the Princeton Light and Power Company, and again by Fortis Inc. several years ago, so some residents are unsure what to make of the latest developments.

“I think people are wondering: Is this a serious look or not?”

Thank you to all Challenge Penticton Canada volunteers, staff and board members, and City staff for the hard work putting on our legendary race.

Together, we made history – and we are triathlon.

The Salvation Army Food Bank has gone into the publishing business, albeit in a very small, though fresh way.

With the help of Food Banks Canada and a $6,000 grant from Campbell’s, the Food Bank has just finished preparing five small books on how to handle some of the more exotic vegetables that come through their doors.

“Allegra Printing did a really beautiful job and gave us a little bit of colour to make them really stand out. One little book per veggie,” said Barb Stewart, program co-ordinator at the Salvation Army.

The project began when Stewart asked 500 food bank clients about which vegetables they didn’t know what to do with, or weren’t comfortable with preparing and cooking.

What came out of that was a list of veggies that are often found in abundance at the food bank, either from donors’ gardens or their own community garden: squashes, beets, eggplant, kale, parsnips.

These aren’t just cookbooks, according to Stewart. While the books do include a few recipes, their information covers the nutritional content of vegetables and how to select, store, clean and preserve them.

City narrows street to slow traffic in school zone Steve Kidd

Children returning to school at Parkway Elementary this year will be a little safer, thanks to some traffic-calming measures the city is installing.

Parkway has a chronic problem with drivers speeding by the school on Kinney Avenue.

There have been many attempts in the past to slow drivers, like the standard Children Crossing signs, including one that now sports a cast after being run over by a driver.

None of these measures has been more than partially successful and city council has directed that more formal measures be installed.

The first phase involves bolting high-visibility plastic posts into the road surface to narrow the road and monitor how well this works to slow down traffic.

If it is effective, more permanent measures will be taken next year.

“The principle is if you physically narrow down the road, you will not feel comfortable driving as fast,” said city engineer Ian Chapman.

“It’s a little bit of a trial. We’ve not done it in Penticton before, we’ve no reason to believe it wouldn’t be successful but instead of just rolling in with the concrete paving machines, we decided we would try it out with some delineators first.”

The Parkway parent’s advisory council has also taken action on the issue, working with the school and raising money to purchase a permanent speedreader board, which was installed in June.

“That was through the joint work of the PAC, the school, the city and I believe ICBC kicked in some toward the installation,” said Kelly Jones, principal at Parkway.

He’s happy to see the city taking extra measures.

“All last year, I was putting pylons in and out every day to narrow that street and it certainly worked very well,” said Jones.

“When the speed reader board came in that helped, but just narrowing the street with those cones really causes people to slow down.

“So we are thrilled that it is going to be permanent and we won’t have to move them in and out every day.”

Besides constricting the roadway, Chapman said the posts and the change in traffic pattern should make drivers more aware “It is just sending signals to drivers that you are in a special area, slow down,” said Chapman “That’s really all there is to it.”

Chapman said they originally hoped to have the delineator posts installed before the start of the school year.

But the decision was made to slow the process down a little in order to let the neighbourhood know what was going on. It is now expected they will be in place after the school year begins.

“We are going to have a little bit of a session with the local residents, the school staff, the parent advisory committee, make sure everybody buys into the whole thing,” said Chapman. “Basically, we are looking for a solution that works for everybody.”

There will be some effect on street parking for residents in the area, but all driveways will remain accessible. Jones thinks the neighbourhood will support the plan.

“We have a lot of seniors around our school, with the seniors’ facility just up the street from us.

car chase ends at pump in oliver Western News Staff

After high-speed police chases between three South Okanagan communities, a 21-yearold man was finally nabbed while gassing up at an Oliver convenience store.

The unidentified driver, who was in a 2001 Ford Explorer, first caught Mounties’ attention around 11 p.m.

Thursday while speeding on Highway 97 just south of Summerland, according to an RCMP press release.

An officer from Summerland briefly gave chase, but broke off the pursuit due to excessive speed.

The officer alerted colleagues to the south, who also tried to catch up with the man in Penticton on the Channel Parkway, but they too gave up because of concern for public safety.

Later, a Mountie clocked the suspect vehicle travelling 140 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Highway 97 near Oliver.

A police cruiser was

also damaged during an attempt to stop the Explorer. Officers from three RCMP detachments regrouped and focused efforts their efforts in Oliver.

“It was a keen sense of observation and good instinct that paid off, when plainclothes Penticton officers observed a nervous male filling up a gas can at the Oliver 7-11 gas station,” said Sgt. Ken Harrington, the RCMP area commander.

“Acting on the odds of probability and po-

lice intuition, investigators covertly observed and followed the male who walked away from the pumps and led them back to the suspect vehicle.”

The driver, whose name has not been released, was expected to appear in Penticton provincial court on Monday to face charges related to the chase.

Mounties said the man, who lived most recently in Kamloops, also had eight outstanding warrants for his arrest in Manitoba.

Hindsight is key to Challenge Hindsight is 100 per cent, and we can only hope that the Challenge Penticton organizers have their hindsight glasses on.

To be sure, the fact that hometown favourite Jeff Symonds pulled off the win on the men’s side, despite taking a fall during the bike portion of the race, helped give the event a Cinderella finish.

Add to that Jen Annett of Penticton finished third on the women’s side, and from a race point of view, Challenge Penticton was successful.

But the organizers of Challenge Penticton promised more, particularly for the community of Penticton and therein lies the need for hindsight and hopefully some foresight.

A few of the oversights include the use of an out of town auto dealer to supply vehicles for the athletes parade and to ferry VIPs, as well as an out of town photographer.

Despite these oversights, the triathletes had nothing but good things to say about the race.

That, in and of itself, is the most important result from Challenge Penticton because they will tell their fellow triathletes, who didn’t participate in this year’s Challenge, what a great race it was and hopefully that will attract more top-flight competitors.

Neither Rome nor Ironman Canada were built in a day and the same leeway should be given to the organizers of Challenge Penticton.

PENTICTON WESTERN There is a first time for everything, and all in all Challenge Penticton met the challenge and, with hindsight and a bit of foresight, next year’s Challenge will be better.

Another defeat for the environment

“The world has failed us,” said Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa. “I have signed the executive decree for the liquidation of the Yasuni-ITT trust fund and with this, ended the initiative.” What might have been a model for a system that helps poor countries avoid the need to ruin their environment in order to make ends meet has failed, because the rich countries would not support it.

In 2007, oil drillers found a reservoir of an estimated 846 million barrels of heavy crude in Yasuni National Park, in Ecuador’s part of the Amazon. But the park is home to two indigenous tribes that have so far succeeded in living in voluntary isolation – and it is listed by UNESCO as a world biosphere reserve. A single hectare of Yasuni contains more species of trees than all of North America.

Ecuador, which cannot access finance on international markets, desperately needs money, and the oil meant money: an estimated $7.2 billion over the next decade. Never-

theless, Ecuadorians were horrified by the pollution, deforestation, and cultural destruction that the drilling would cause: a large majority of them opposed drilling in the park. And then Energy Minister Alberto Acosta had an idea.

What if Ecuador just left the oil in the ground? In return, Acosta hoped the rest of the world would come up with $3.6 billion (half of the forecast income from oil revenues) over the next decade, to be spent on non-polluting energy generation like hydroelectric and solar power schemes and on social programmes to help Ecuador’s many poor.

The pay-off for the foreign contributors to this fund would come mainly from the fact that the oil under Yasuni would never be burned, thereby preventing more than 400 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere. Only a drop in the bucket, perhaps, but if the model worked it could be applied widely elsewhere, offering the poor countries an alternative to selling everything they can dig

The idea won the support of the United Nations Development Programme, which agreed to administer the Yasuni-ITT trust fund.

It was set up in 2009, and the money started to come in. But it didn’t flood in; it just trickled.

Chile, Colombia, Turkey and Georgia donated token amounts.

Brazil and Indonesia (which would certainly benefit from the same sort of arrangement) promised donations eventually but didn’t actually put any money up. Among the developed countries, Spain, Belgium and France also promised donations, Italy wrote off $51 million of Ecuadorian debt, and Germany offered $50 million worth of technical assistance to the park.

And that was it.

Not a penny from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands or Scandinavia. Individuals put in what they could afford (including high-profile donors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore).

But four years later, the pledges only amounted to $116 million. Actual cash deposits were only $13 million. So last week, Correa pulled the plug.

“It was not charity we sought from the international community,” Correa said, “but co-responsibility in the face of climate change.”

Maybe Correa could have waited a bit longer, but the idea was always Acosta’s baby, and Acosta ran for president against Correa last February and lost.

So we continue on our merry way to a global meltdown – and this just in from London! Fracking is now more important than wind power!

When the Conservatives came into office three years ago they pledged to be the “greenest government ever”, but they have fallen in love with shale

gas, CO2 emissions and all. The British government has announced a new tax regime for fracking described by the Chancellor, George Osborne, as “the most generous for shale (gas) in the world.”

Not only that, but there will be “no standard minimum separation distance” between a fracking rig and people’s houses. Planners considering drilling applications “should give great weight to the benefits of minerals extraction, including to the economy.” In practice, that means that they can drill wherever they want, including your front garden.

Whereas local people will now have a veto on the construction of any wind turbines in their neighbourhood. Prime Minister David Cameron’s office explained that “it is very important that local voters are taken into account when it comes to wind farms.”

Autism letter is hateful

I have worked more than 20 years with adults with different abilities.

Some of those adults have had autism.

In my experience everyone with autism is their own unique individual with some similarities to one another: they laugh, they feel and they love.

How is the letter that the Ontario mother wrote to her neighbor not a hate crime?

It clearly states she move from her neighborhood and that someone should euthanize Max? If the words Jew or gay were anywhere in this letter would it then qualify?

I honestly thought that no one in Canada in 2013 would come to the conclusion that someone with different abilities should be euthanized but instead be greeted with kindness and consideration.

Again I ask how is this not a hate crime?

(re: Evolution just a made up story; Letters, Western News, Aug. 23) I’d like to thank those at the Penticton Western News who make those allimportant decisions about what news or opinion to print or not.

David Mercier’s letter is a perfect example of the deep wisdom this media outlet possessed when it chose to print it.

The effect this rant had on me, and I’m sure on everyone who read it was to snap me out of a growing sense of complacency that perhaps – finally – the majority of the population were starting to understand and accept that thorough scientific study and objectivity, rather than religious beliefs or any other form of bury your head in the sand reasoning (humancaused climate change is just a hoax, the earth has gone through many cycles of warming and cooling in the past)

would start to change our thinking about what we need to change if we want to continue to survive on this planet.

It’s obvious that we have to be very diligent about keeping ourselves informed and educated about scientific advances and research, and only from the most reputable sources, not just the Internet.

Peer-reviewed scientific research that stands the tests of replication and time is our best chance at keeping ourselves and our Earth healthy and vibrant.

The theory of evolution, arrived at through centuries of objective study and analysis by the best inquiring minds of the human race, must certainly amount to such a massive, documented mountain of proof, that no one in their right mind would make a statement such as, “This is not science. Just because someone says it is fact, does not make it so.”

Yes, Mr. Mercier, this is science. Also, evolution isn’t someone saying it is fact.

The idea of evolution is supported by hundreds of years of science by thousands of scientists who have reviewed, duplicated and retested those studies and who all agree that it is fact.

And until some equally massive mountain of scientific

proof is presented that would challenge the theory of evolution, most thinking people would have to come to the same conclusion.

But I did say thinking people.

PIB shouldn’t get money

I read with disbelief the article about the RDOS giving money to the PIB to help clean the channel. Since when does the RDOS give money to a private business to help with expenditures? I have a small business — please give me $14,000 a year!

Also $42,000 a year to clean the channel parkway? I have never seen anyone cleaning up along there. I work full time for Interior Health and I don’t make anywhere close to $43,000 Also, I have lived here all of my life and have never gone down the channel, neither have any of my children, we prefer going down the Similkameen River.

So I do not appreciate the fact that my tax dollars are going to something that I would never use and to top it off to go to a private company to boot.

It’s time that those who have been elected should be reining in the spending instead of throwing money around like drunken sailors.

“You can’t always have a set concept of what you’re going to do, because things can change while you’re planning one thing and it works out another way.”

That ability to roll with the punches is what Henningson, who’s also played in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, believes sets him apart from two challengers in the mayoral byelection on Sept. 7.

The 43-year-old Lower Mainland native moved to Penticton a year ago and worked most recently as a leasehand for a drilling company in the Alberta oil patch. His girlfriend still lives in the Vancouver area.

“We can’t find work up here,” said Henningson, who would put creating jobs at the top of his to-do list if elected mayor.

Although he doesn’t have any specific ideas yet for sparking the local economy, he said city officials should seize opportunities when they come along. He cited the example of the jail that Penticton turned down and will now be built near Oliver.

“That would have created a lot of excellent-paying jobs that aren’t just minimum wage, so that was quite frustrating,” said Henningson.

It’s been a quiet byelection so far for Henningson, who achieved mixed results in his first major campaign effort earlier this month.

He’d planned to meet voters by selling ice cream from a specially designed tricycle, but said he was unable to obtain a business permit, so he never made a dime on $400 worth of product.

“It wasn’t that good a way of campaigning because a lot of the people that I met we’re just tourists from out of town,” he said.

“But I didn’t mind giving away free ice cream.”

Henningson put his name forward for election because he’s tired of seeing public dollars wasted and thinks the local government would benefit from his common-sense approach.

“I’m just a straightforward, honest guy,” he said. “Maybe that will work against me. People seem to like smoothtalking politicians. I wouldn’t consider myself that kind of guy.

Gary Litke

Garry Litke’s motivation to be in politics dates back to 2001, when then premier Gordon Campbell tore up a contract negotiated with the province’s teachers.

“When I realized that a fairly negotiated and legal contract could be torn up by politicians, I realized I needed to be a politician to actually have influence,” said Litke, who was a teacher for 33 years, 27 of them in Penticton.

Litke said he began teaching in Alberta before moving to Penticton for a job at Princess Margaret, moving through a number of positions over the years, including a stint with the B.C. Teachers Federation.

Working with the BCTF, Litke was part of the negotiating team that put together the infamous 2001 contract.

“That’s when I moved from the negotiating table into the political arena,” said Litke, who first ran for municipal office in 2002, before trying again in 2005 at provincial and municipal levels.

“I ran for the NDP in May of 2005 and then ran municipally that same year and was elected. I’ve been re-elected twice now, in 2008 and again in 2011. Each time my public support increases,” said Litke, who is married with one

daughter still at home.

“She is in Grade 12 going to Pen High this year. And my two sons, one is working in Edmonton and one is working in Vancouver,” he said, adding that creating opportunities for young people has always been an issue for him, after watching his students graduating and leaving the area.

“It seemed like we were losing our best and our brightest. Or alternatively I would see some of my brightest students locked into menial jobs they had to accept in order to stay here with their families,” said Litke.

“I remember my campaign in 2002 was to create better paying jobs for our young people and affordable housing was another one that was big on my agenda back then.

“Those two issues have sort of guided my decision making over the years.”

Litke remains enthusiastic about Penticton’s unique qualities.

“I have done a fair bit of travelling around the world and I have seen a variety of regions and towns and cities and every time I come home, I appreciate more deeply just how special Penticton is,” he said, He extends that not just to the setting and the climate, but the people and the community’s volunteer ethic.

Litke lists a variety of events as examples, starting with the just finished Challenge Penticton triathlon, the upcoming jazz festival and others, where people volunteer year after year, for decades in some cases.

“You name it, the volunteers in this community are just amazing,” said Litke.

“I don’t like what is coming out of city hall,” he said as his main reason for putting his name forward for the Sept. 7 vote.

Powell spent 33 years in the military, retiring as a sergeant major overseeing communications for the Department of National Defence.

He moved to Penticton in 1999 and became a frustrated bystander watching the actions of city council.

Powell said while he was serving in Germany, he was chosen as the mayor of the married quarter-area and handled the administration.

Having travelled across Canada six times, Powell and his wife Cheryl decided they would call B.C. home when he retired, because her children from a previous marriage lived nearby.

“This is the longest I have stayed in one place for the last 40 years, so that must say something,” said Powell.

The mayoral candidate previously admitted to having little volunteer service experience in the community. His hobbies include tinkering in his backyard.

“After 33 years of volunteering my life to the country, do I really have to do more volunteer work?” said Powell.

“I have got .37 of an acre here with a swimming pool and garden that keep me pretty busy.”

Powell said his promises to the community will be kept should he win the mayor’s seat.

“My promise to the people is the tax money collected, that money will go to people not all over the place. Tax money will be well spent and will not be squandered like it is now.”

Travellers are quickly running out of time to book their spots in a raffle for a pair of WestJet tickets to anywhere the airline flies.

The Downtown Penticton Association is running the draw in partnership with Hope Air, a national charity that provides free flights for people who need to travel for medical appointments but are unable to afford to go.

Raffle tickets, one for $10 or three for $20, are available at the DPA office or its booth at the farmers’ market. The draw is scheduled for Sept. 2 at noon.

“The DPA is always looking to support the community however we can,” said executive director Kerri Milton. “We thought this was a great opportunity to support those who need help.”

So did WestJet, which donated the tickets and also regularly donates flights to Hope Air, and so does Henry Ilg. The retired commercial pilot is part of a network of about 130 across Canada who donate their time and aircraft to get patients where they need to go.

He owns a four-seater, single engine Cessna 177 Cardinal and is part owner of a twin-engine, six-seater Piper Seneca, which makes Hope Air the perfect hobby for him.

“I have an airplane or access to an airplane, I enjoy flying and I enjoy using my skills to help other people,” said Ilg, who lives in Richmond.

“By doing flights, we save people time. For example, if I do a Castlegar to Vancouver flight, that saves someone an 11-hour bus trip,” said the Richmond man, who also transports Penticton residents.

His last mission here, about six months ago, saw him deliver a mother, plus her two young children and mother-in-law to an appointment in Vancouver.

“That was actually a bigger load,” said Ilg, who usually has just two passengers.

“I don’t not ask what their (medical) condition is,” he added. “If they tell me, they tell me.”

Ilg began volunteering for Hope Air in 2009 and annually flies eight to 10 missions, which are put up for grabs on a pilots’-only web page. In return for his time, the charity pays for half his fuel, then issues a charitable donation receipt for the rest. All told, it works out to about a 75 per cent subsidy.

Proceeds from the Penticton raffle and other fundraisers will help Hope Air reimburse Ilg and other pilots, and purchase commercial flights as necessary. In 2012, the charity arranged 109 trips from Penticton. Across Canada, it provided 6,091 flights, up from 4,579 in 2011.

Hope Air is not an ambulance service and patients must be well enough to fly without medical help. They must also be scheduled to see a specialist who is covered under a provincial health service, and demonstrate a financial need for assistance.

There are big things brewing in shared spaces, and not just when it comes to offices and business.

Penticton artist Kindrie Grove is experimenting. Not just with her art, but with the concept of shared creative spaces. Grove is combining forces with Nick and Jen Vincent of Co-Work Penticton to create the Art Experiment, a new series of fun evenings to create and play.

Grove already operates a shared space, combining her personal studio, a gallery, rental studio spaces and more at Kindrie Grove Studios on Main Street, while the Vincent’s Co-Work is a shared business/ entrepreneurial space.

But the Vincents are also starting a new project, Art House, a co-work type space for the creative set.

“We are teaming up on a couple of things. We have one which is called the Art Experiment, which is going to be a creative experiment night for people to come and play with different materials,” said Grove.

“There will be stuff set up for musicians if they want to jam, or poetry readings, anything goes.”

Jen Vincent gives the credit to Grove for spearheading the project, and the first event, on Sept. 9, will take place at Grove’s

studio, where she has already developed a community around her shared spaces.

“It’s been really rewarding to watch it evolve and the community around the studio grow. From that standpoint, I’ve been really enjoying that, seeing how it unfolds,” said Grove. “I’ve got some musicians that use the space to rehearse in after hours. I’ve got three full-time permanent residents and a lot of people that come in and use the space and mentor with me.”

“We both have communities we work with and we’re both looking forward to creating an open creative evening,” said Vincent. “Come and bring a project and work on it and get something done together, maybe collaborate and share.”

Vincent, who hopes to have Art House up and running in October, said the Art Experiment concept dovetails nicely with their plans.

“An event like Kindrie’s on a regular monthly schedule seems to be a really great way of starting things off and can really bring a little bit of public focus and fun to it,” said Vincent. “For us, the whole reason for creating the new space is to create a location where people are being creative in a communal environment.”

The Art Experiment will take place on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

Because of Labour Day, the first event will take place on Sept. 9 at Grove’s Main St.

studio. Cost is $15 for “supplies, nibblies and wine.”

The Art Experiment is not the only collaborative event Grove is involved in. In showcasing work done by the life-drawing group that meets at her studio, she decided to open the show up to a wider group “I’ve just put out a call for submissions for anybody that does life drawing — there are quite a few different groups — to submit a couple of works and have an exhibition in September,” said Grove.

The deadline for entries is Sept. 9, with the show’s opening reception on Sept. 19 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. But it won’t be the only event that night. The Tumbleweed Gallery along with neighbours St Germain Cafe and possibly Ad Hoc Clothing will also be having events that night, something Grove describes as an “art walk crawl along Main. St. “That’s kind of fun, that’s something we are working on as a group to get more interest,” said Grove. “When people come out to look at art, they can take in several openings at once instead of trying to pick and choose between which one they want to see the most.

“People are so busy, it’s impossible to get to everything. I think it will be really fun to even have a day once a month or every couple of months that is like an art walk day.”

Colin James coming to the city Western News Staff

Six-time Juno Awardwinner Colin James will be performing in Penticton this October at the Cleland Theatre.

James has worn many hats during his long and storied career.

Since he first hit the scene a quarter-century ago and topped the charts as a pop vocalist, he has since recorded an acclaimed blues album, led the swing revival with his Little Big Band, sold multi-platinum albums, sells out shows coast-to-coast and now has come full circle with his latest album titled Fifteen. The release, aptly titled as it is his 15th album, takes him back to his rock roots.

“We really wanted this album to rock, but I tried to showcase some pretty tunes and soulful stuff as well,” said James in a press release.

There were a lot of different sides to him.”

Although much of the attention James has re-

ceived has been focused on his guitar prowess and songwriting, these days, Colin’s focus is on something else — singing. This may sound surprising, coming from a guy who took home the Juno Award for Male Vocalist of the Year twice, but Colin says it’s all a process.

“I’m still becoming a better singer,” he said. “I feel like I’m in the middle of the learning curve and I’m just starting to get it. I saw Solomon Burke in Norway before he died and I thought, ‘this man is a better singer now than he’s ever been.’ I’m inspired by that, by the idea that I could be lucky enough to do this forever and still be learning how to hit a song like I want to.”

James is performing at the Cleland Theatre on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.

Fists raised and head thrown back, the young, professional Peach City triathlete shouted in joy as he danced the final 30 metres to the finish line in a time of eight hours, 29 minutes and 57 seconds.

Scott DeFilippis of Normandy Beach, N.J., was a distant second, nearly 15 minutes back.

Symonds, competing in only his second long-distance triathlon, suffered serious scrapes to his hands, arms and legs after crashing his bicycle on a steep hill near Yellow Lake.

The 27-year-old later admitted he had concerns about finishing the race but somehow found the will to continue.

tion, even for a moment, it can be all over, so I was just glad to get up and back on the bike,” he said.

“It (accident) just made it that much more painful and that much more tougher, but it also made it that much more rewarding. I’m never going to forget this one, that’s for sure.

“I grew up watching the race but I never dreamed I would be in this position one day.

“I guess it shows that anything is possible.”

The winner also beat some big names in the sport, including four-time Challenge Roth and two-time Ironman world champion Chris McCormack.

McCormack was a second ahead of Symonds in the swim but did not complete the race.

Symonds finished the 3.8-kilometre swim in 0:55:37.

He took the lead on the cycle portion (180 km) and never looked back.As Symonds turned onto Lakeshore Drive from Main Street on the bike he appeared relaxed.

Coming out of the transition area, his face was more determined as he began the final 42km leg of the race which he ran in a time of 2:47:31.

His cycling time was 4:43:26, fastest overall.

Jamie Whyte of New Zealand was third (8:56:08) followed by Canadians Adam O’Meara of Victoria (9:08:34) and Chillwack’s Anthony Toth (9:10:14).

Sunday was also a special day for another hometown favourite, Jen Annett, competing

in her first distance triathlon as a professional.

She wound up third (9:58:23) behind Karen Thibodeau (9:41:42) of Canmore, Alta., and winner Lester Carrie of Australia (9:27:26).

“I had to keep telling myself that it wasn’t any different (as a pro) because really at the end of the day it’s not,” said Annett who crossed the finish line with husband Jason and 15-month-old son Nixon.

“I still had to race to my capabilities. and not anybody else’s race.”

Annett had 10 other women in front of her after the swim but a quick transition time and strong bike ride helped her climb into third spot.

Jennifer Luebke of Bend, Ore. was fourth (10:13:34).

In the relay event, it was Team MitoCanada in first, and 23 minutes shy of breaking the sub-eight hour Guinness World Record cut-off.

Team members included, Sean Penhale, Scott Curry and Blaine Penny.

Twitter brings intrigue to Challenge

Illness prevented me from covering the debut of Challenge Penticton.

I kept myself in the loop, however, through Twitter and TV. Waking up Sunday morning I watched the start as I was curious to see how many spectators lined Okanagan Lake. Then I returned to my bed.

Between watching movies, TV and playing FIFA 12 on my PS3, I grabbed my phone and scrolled through Twitter to check messages posted by Sophia Chadwick, the girlfriend of eventual Challenge Penticton champ, Jeff Symonds.

Prior to starting the race, Symonds joked that Chadwick was hijacking his account.

Between her posts and Challenge Penticton’s, it provided me with intrigue throughout the day.

If you are the type of person who does not handle large crowds well, I definitely recommend following Challenge Penticton athletes the way I just did as it provides a different perspective.

However, I agree with most people that you get the best experience of enjoying a sporting event by being there.

Before I end this, I want to offer my congratulations to Symonds on his incredible performance. Same to the other winners and finishers, including my friend Kevin Laycock, who was part of the relay team, Blood, Sweat and Beers.

Shinkaruk excited for Young Stars Classic

Hunter Shinkaruk will have a different view of the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Classic from Sept. 5 to 9 at Penticton’s South Okanagan Events Centre.

During its first two years, the Calgary resident watched what was initially called the Canucks Young Stars Tournament on TV. This year, he will be on the ice as a prospect of the Vancouver Canucks. The Medicine Hat Tigers forward was the Canucks’ second pick, 24th overall, in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft. He would love nothing more than to join the likes of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Cam Fowler, Mikael Backlund and the Canucks’ Chris Tanev, who starred in the tournament and moved on to the NHL. Since the tournament’s inception in 2010, 30 players have advanced to the NHL. “I want to show the Canucks organization that I can be a really high-level player at that tournament heading into camp,” said Shinkaruk. “It’s an opportunity to show them that they drafted the right kid.”

Shinkaruk, who scored 100 goals and added 119 assists in 193 Western Hockey League games, is taking the approach of showing the Canucks he can earn a roster spot. He wants to be the best player on the ice every shift. The Tigers captain said he’s looking forward to putting on the Canucks jersey for the first time.

Shinkaruk will be joined by fellow Canucks 2013 draft picks Bo Horvat, who was chosen ninth overall in the first round, Cole Cassels, 85th overall, Jordan Subban, 115th overall, and Miles Liberati, chosen 205th overall.

Dave Gagner, director of player development for the Canucks, said what scouts like about the event is that it gives them a chance to see the players in a competitive setting.

“It’s easier to see their skillset when they are in that type of an environment,” said Gagner. “You get to see the hockey sense and the compete level.”

Gagner added the Canucks Young Stars Classic provides exposure for the players, especially if teams don’t have spots for players.

“Matt Fraser comes to mind,” said Gagner. “We weren’t able to sign him a couple years ago and Dallas went ahead and signed him because of what he showed.”

Competition gets pretty intense and teams see the character the players have.

“I think in a competitive nature, some

guys that maybe don’t excel in skill drills or whatever in practice, can really show what they are made of in games,” he said.

Gagner said the Canucks Young Stars Classic will be entertaining because fans will get exposure to high draft picks. The players are competing for jobs. He always finds it interesting to see if players can find another level when challenged.

“I can remember (Ryan) Nugent-Hopkins going two years ago,” said Gagner.

“You could see right away the special skill that he had. He was drafted first overall, but when they get in that first pro environment, it’s really neat to see those kids adjust so quickly. I think for people in attendance, there is going to be a lot of interesting players to see.”

Gagner is excited to watch Horvat and Shinkaruk. He is curious to see how close they are to playing for the Canucks.

“Bo Horvat has a really mature game already for an 18-year-old,” said Gagner, who played 33 of his 946 career games with the Canucks in 1999. “He understands how to play in all three zones very well. Coaches really like guys like that.

They are reliable and you are not afraid to put them on the ice in any situation.

“He takes pride in his faceoffs, he’s always on the defensive side of the puck,” continued Gagner. “He takes pride in blocking shots. He also has offensive ability too. There is an outside chance he is going to make the team.”

With Shinkaruk, Gagner said the five-foot-11, 175-pound left winger is deceptively strong. Shinkaruk is known for playing a heavier game and competes hard.

“His skill is very evident. He has good pop in his stride,” said Gagner. “Hunter stands out because of his involvement.

He has the puck quite often when he’s out there.”

The Canucks Young Stars Classic begins Sept. 5 with the Battle of Alberta between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames at 4 p.m. The Canucks and Sharks meet up at 7:30 p.m. On Sept. 6, the Winnipeg Jets meet the Sharks at 4 p.m., then the Canucks and Flames play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday features the alumni game at 5 p.m., followed by the Oilers and Jets at 7:30 p.m. On Sept. 8, the Canucks and Oilers play at 2 p.m. and the Sharks and Flames at 5:30 p.m. The final game, played in the Okanagan Hockey School Training Centre, will be Sept. 9 at noon between the Canucks and Jets.

Ryan Gropp, the BCHLs reigning Interior Conference Rookie of the Year, wants to take his game to another level.

“I definitely want to be a go-to guy. I think I can be relied upon for lots of the offence,” said Gropp, who last season scored 12 goals and finished with 31 points in 50 games. “I’m expecting big things out of myself.”

The Vees coaching staff have the same expecta-

tions. Fred Harbinson had a chat with the 17-year-old and said the goal for Gropp should be to be one elite players in the BCHL. “He’s going to have to ramp up his intensity every single shift. When he’s on, he is one of the best players in the league,” said Harbinson. “He’s willing to do that. He wants that. I fully expect him to accomplish the goal of being one of the best players in the league.

If he does that, that’s going to help us win a lot of hockey games.”

During a 2-0 win Monday night against the West Kelowna Warriors in the South Okanagan Events Centre, Gropp displayed a few of the moves he’s known for. During the second period, he beat Warriors goalie Steve Myland five-hole with a wrist shot.

Gropp, an alumni of the Okanagan Hockey Academy, said training camp was good for him. He’s found early chemistry playing alongside captain Brad McClure and Ben Dalpe, brother of former Vee Zac

Dalpe.

“We’re good friends off the ice so it helps us going onto the ice,” said Gropp.

The Kamloops minor hockey product said he felt good against the Warriors in his exhibition debut. As the game went on, he felt he got better.

“I thought I played pretty well, was getting chances and getting the puck deep,” said Gropp, who over the summer made it his goal to get stronger and faster.

The Vees wrapped up

their training camp on Aug. 24, playing their first exhibition game, a 3-3 tie with the Warriors on Aug. 25 in West Kelowna. Harbinson said camp went well and liked how the players came together. Harbinson also said the pace was good.

“I think we learned a lot about our team. We have a few more tough decisions to make after tomorrow (Wednesday) night,” said Harbinson, whose team is dealing with player illness as Cody DePourcq, Matt

Serratore and Shane Bennett, brother of Beau Bennett, all have the flu.

“There wasn’t really any disappointments that came to camp,” said Harbinson. “Sometimes it’s not about what you

didn’t do, it’s maybe what somebody else did.

Everybody has given their best shot at trying to make the team.”

Two-time Stanley Cup champion Duncan Keith will celebrate his 2013 NHL championship victory with Penticton, on Aug. 31.

The Chicago Blackhawks defenceman and former Penticton Panther is sharing the Stanley Cup with the public at Gyro Park at 11 a.m.

“We’re thrilled that the Stanley Cup is coming to Penticton and the community can share in Duncan Keith’s achievement,” said deputy mayor Helena Konanz, who hopes fans of all ages come out to show their support.

After a wildly successful inaugural race in 2012, Covert Farms and Hoodoo Adventures will host another Freak’n Farmer adventure obstacle race. New this year is the Freak’n Little Farmer for youths ages eight to 16, offering the opportunity to get a taste of adventure by running the muddy obstacle course.

Organizers suggest not to wear new running shoes as everyone participating will get very dirty. They also recommend people to get creative with what they wear, or even come out in costume. Awards will be handed out for top men, women and teams in the competitive category as well as best costume, team name and most spirited team.

RESPONSIBILITIES As part of a highly motivated team, the Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the safety, supervision, scheduling, training and development of all tradespeople. This key position works closely with production and other maintenance staff to ensure product quality, quantity, overall equipment efficiency, as well as oversee plant and site maintenance. The successful applicant will need to have a strong mechanical background, good understanding of electrical PLC systems, and have some budgeting experience. This incumbent will also require excellent leadership skills to deliver on World Class Maintenance results.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will be a qualified tradesperson and possess comprehensive knowledge of related trades, OH&S and industrial relations.

Direct production, project management and work order maintenance system experience are required.

Strong communication, organization and time management skills are essential.

Preference will be given to those with demonstrated leadership and analytical abilities and experience in a maintenance supervisory role.

CMMS knowledge and experience will be a huge asset to this position.
