Campfire ban lifted for Kamloops Fire Centre KAMLOOPS – Effective at noon on Monday, Aug. 26, campfires will be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. The campfire ban is being rescinded due to recent widespread precipitation that has resulted in a decreased risk of wildfires in the region. Anyone lighting a campfire must follow B.C.’s campfire regulations, which include the following: The campfire must not exceed the allowed size of a half-metre wide by a half-metre high. Flammable material (such a twigs and pine needles) must be removed from around the campfire area and this fuel-free area must be maintained while the campfire is burning. A shovel or at least eight litres of water must be on site to properly extinguish the fire. Never leave a campfire unattended. The ashes must be cool to the touch before you leave the area. Category 2 and 3 open fires remain prohibited for the entire Kamloops Fire Centre. This prohibition includes all open fires larger than a half-metre high by a half-metre wide, fires with a burn registration number, industrial burning, fireworks, sky lanterns and burning barrels. Anyone found in violation of an open fire ban may be issued a ticket for up to $345. If that fire leads to a wildfire, the person(s) responsible may be fined up to $1 million, spend up to three years in prison and be held accountable for associated firefighting costs. These prohibitions cover all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but do not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by fire departments. Please check with local governments for any other restrictions before lighting a fire. During the annual Agricultural Fair in Princeton, entertainer Mat Duffus works on convincing these children to participate in his “Snake Eating Contest.” The kids are a little perplexed until Duffus lets them in on the fact that the snakes are made of candy.
Agri-fair and Little Britches Rodeo combine events Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
The Princeton and District Agricultural Fair was held this past weekend, featuring Little Britches Rodeo as the main event. Barrel racing, breakaway calf roping and goat tying were a few of the events held during the rodeo, as well as a guest performance by the Marron Valley Drill Team. Bingo, displays, contests, prize draws and numerous activities for kids were presented by vendors and the Agricultural Fair. The annual Horseshoe Tournament was held on Saturday and the evening entertainment was provided by Dale Seaman and Highway 97.

Adults and children enjoyed the Dunk Tank provided by the Princeton Highland Dancers. The dancers got to cool off in an effort to raise funds for a trip to a competition in Hawaii. Fun Zone Rentals out of Kamloops helped to provide two days of pure fun and excitement for the kids attending both the rodeo and the fair. The Laser Tag, Enclosed Bounce/Slide and the Pirate Ship Bounce/Slide were huge hits and the crew manning them did an excellent job. As of press time, results from the fair and the rodeo are still being tallied. See next weeks Spotlight for full details. The next and final event of this season at the Princeton Exhibition Grounds will be held on Saturday, October 26. Get your spooks on and prepare for Halloween Family Fun Night 2013.
