Olsen will lead the B.C. Green Party Former Central Saanich councillor vows to help the party be ready for 2017 Steven Heywood News staff
Adam Olsen says his new job with the B.C. Green Party will take him across the province, working with members with an eye to winning additional seats in the legislature in 2017. Olsen was appointed interim leader of the B.C. Greens Saturday night following a vote by the party’s new provincial council at its annual general meeting in Vancouver. Olsen replaces Jane Sterk who led the party for seven years and who announced her retirement earlier this month. Olsen, 37, is a former Central Saanich district councillor who ran in the last provincial election in Saanich North and the Islands. He came third in a close race that saw the NDP’s Gary Holman win in an official recount over Stephen Roberts of the B.C. Liberals. Olsen is a member of the Tsartlip First Nation and has a family business, Salish Fusion Knitwear, with his partner Emily and children Silas and Ella. The Green Party’s provincial council elected Olsen as interim leader to help guide the party forward, following success in the last election that saw Andrew Weaver elected as their first Adam Olsen MLA. Olsen said the party will eventually hold a leadership race to select a more permanent leader, but for now, both he and the provincial council are facing steep learning curves. “I’m happy to be in this role,” he said. “We have a tremendous opportunity with Andrew in the legislature.” “I am delighted and excited to see Adam Olsen appointed as interim leader of the B.C. Green Party,” Weaver said in a media release. Please see: Serious politicians, serious issues, page 4
