A fire at the Grand Forks Arena on Thursday was quickly put out by a fire crew with the help of an ice-making hose from inside the arena. At around 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 22 Grand Forks Fire Rescue was called in after smoke was visible on the southwest wall of the arena. Dale Heriot, Grand Forks Fire Rescue fire chief and manager of emergency services, met one of the arena workers there and together they opened up the wall. Another arena worker grabbed a water hose they were using to flood the arena with ice and brought it out. Heriot and arena staff peeled back the metal siding and put the water on it and managed to contain the fire until firefighters arrived on the scene. Heriot said once the fire crews were there with the fire truck, they peeled back more of the siding to access the fire. “We then used our thermal imaging camera to make sure there was no extension (of the fire) into the upper wall and ceiling, interior and exterior,” he said. “We completed our mop up,” and left after about an hour. Heriot said although they don’t know what caused the fire, it was not of a suspicious nature.

A large section of Riverside Drive in Grand Forks was closed for most of Wednesday after police halted a vehicle carrying several sticks of dynamite. RCMP learned of a person attempting to transport sticks of dynamite in a truck on Aug. 21, and managed to stop the driver, directing them to place
the 35 sticks on the roadway and leave the vehicle. Although Grand Forks Fire Rescue attended the scene, the “bomb squad” from Vancouver was called to the area to properly dispose of the dynamite. The suspect had previously contacted the fire department asking for help.
