Fantastic concerts; Project Discovery a hit; lots of positive comments by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News

This year’s Jazz At The Lake Festival couldn’t have been any better, according to society board president Eric Allison. “We had a fantastic weekend. The weather co-operated and there were so many highlights,” he said. Some of those highlights included concerts by Dee Daniels and P.J. Perry, he added. “Both P.J.’s and Dee Daniels’ concerts were just fantastic. We did sell out most of our concerts, and with P.J., I think we used every chair that the Alliance Church owned. “We had to reset the room twice to

accommodate the crowd.” Allison said Perry, who grew up and learned jazz in Sylvan Lake, had nearly 30 members of his family in attendance at his Friday night concert. That, he said, made that particular concert extra special. “We’ve never had that big of a crowd in the Alliance Church.” Attendance remained strong throughout the weekend, as festival dwellers took in the many jazz-related events around Sylvan Lake. Some, including Jazz Goes to College at Lions Legacy Park, were presented free of admission. Another such event was the Project Discovery concert, which took place at

Gospel Chapel on Saturday afternoon. There, winners of Sylvan Celebration of Music Festival and Red Deer Festival of the Performing Arts were given the opportunity to show off their talents. Allison felt it, too, was one of the weekend’s high points. “We had no idea if the kids would even respond and say they want to do this in the middle of summer,” he said. “We were just thrilled to see how big the audience was, and how great the talent was of all those kids that performed.” The idea for the concert came from festival producer Cheryl Fisher, said Allison. “She’s been wanting to get more young people involved in the festival for years

now, but it’s very difficult because it’s summertime, and the kids aren’t in school, their ensembles aren’t rehearsing, families are on holiday, and it’s just an uphill battle trying to get more young people involved.” The concert will “definitely” continue to be a part of the festival in the future, he indicated. Following the Project Discovery concert on Saturday was a jazz workshop featuring Dee Daniels, P.J. Perry and Alberta Playboys rhythm section. Kicking things off the week prior on Aug. 10 was a new concert held at One Eleven Grill in Red Deer. Continued on Page 19
