Cranbrook cop charged over shooting Cst. Richard Drought will appear in court on Sept. 16 facing charges of recklessly discharging a firearm Townsman Staff

A Cranbrook RCMP officer has been charged over the October 2 shooting of a Port Coquitlam man in Cranbrook. Cst. Richard Drought faces charges of intentionally discharging a firearm into a motor vehicle, knowing that another person was in the motor vehicle, and of intentionally discharging a firearm while being reckless as to the life or safety of another person. The charges are an indictable offence and, if found guilty, Cst. Drought would face a minimum five-year sentence. According to the statement released by the B.C. Criminal Justice Branch on Thursday, August 8, the charges were laid by a senior prosecutor who doesn’t work in the Kootenays.

With Arts on the Edge taking place this weekend in Kimberley, the arts will be in the forefront. And occurring at the same time as the Arts Fest is the Co-

lumbia Basin Cultural Tour. The CBCT is a self guided tour showcasing local arts, culture and heritage offered at no charge to the general public. The public will pick up a full colour printed directory and use it to visit a number of locations such as artists’ studios, museums, art galleries cultural centers and heritage sites through-

out the Columbia Basin. This event is an opportunity for people to meet the participants “behind the scenes”. The tour is taking place August 10 and 11, 2013, from 10 am to 5 pm in communities across the Basin, including Kimberley and Cranbrook. During the event attendees may: visit artists studios that

may not regularly be open to the public; have an opportunity to purchase works directly from artists; visit art galleries and museums to view special interpretive displays, demonstrations or performances; meet local artists, curators and historians in attendance at the participating venues.
