A Langley resident with no background in mining is asking the provincial government to allow him to do some drilling on 111 acres of Crown land in northeast Coquitlam near Minnekhada Regional Park. John Carley told The Tri-City News he plans to drill on the land north of the park to see if the

rock can be extracted for construction projects. It is his first time requesting an investigative permit from the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, which is seeking public input on the bid until Aug. 29. Carley, who said he’s acting alone on the quarry proposal, said he picked the Crown property at Quarry Road and Calgary Drive “because it’s a good location. There’s no residential around it and it’s kind of tucked away… It’s not going to be an eyesore.” see ‘VERY’, page 6

Coquitlam RCMP are warning people to be careful after three cellphone robberies occurred during a 90-minute period last week. The first incident took place around 10:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at Purcell Drive and Dayanee Springs Boulevard in Coquitlam; three suspects robbed a victim of his iPhone and other personal property, then fled in an older model, blue, two-door Honda. The second incident occurred 30 minutes

later, this time at Prairie Avenue and Skeena Street in Port Coquitlam; three suspects confronted two victims, demanding their cellphones before running away. Three more victims were robbed of their Blackberries by three suspects shortly after midnight the same night. “Luckily, no one was hurt in the robberies,” said RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung. “There are definitely similarities in suspects’ descriptors and how the robberies were carried out in all three incidents.” He said that the robbery section of the Coquitlam detachment has taken over the investigation. see THEFTS FROM, page 6
