Traffic troubles Residents not happy with Qualicum council JOHN HARDING
editor@pqbnews.com
The Eaglecrest Residents’ Association is not amused. In its latest newsletter, the association blasts the Town of Qualicum Beach and its councillors for not addressing the traffic safety concerns at the Highway 19A/Village Way intersection. “If public safety were not such a serious matter, it would be almost humorous to see how our elected officials prioritize their time and attention,” stated an unattributed portion of the newsletter. “The people involved in these accidents, the people who witness these accidents, and the people who use 19A, we’re certain, are not laughing.” Coun. Mary Brouilette said Tuesday council is waiting for staff to bring forward some recommendations (possibly Monday), and she said she understands the frustrations of Eaglecrest residents. “They should keep our feet to the fire,” said Brouilette. “I can totally understand their concern if it appears we are not paying any attention but I can assure them we are.” A detailed report related to age-friendly transportation was presented to town council months ago by a consultant. A roundabout at the Village Way/ Highway19A intersection was part of that consultant’s report. “It’s on the project priority list,” the town’s Director of Engineering Bob Weir said this week. “We have no money to build one right now, but these recommendations (from age-friendly transportation consultant) will probably form part of budget deliberations by council in the fall.” See ‘IT’S NOT A NEW TOPIC’, page A4

OVERDRIVE CAR SHOW
Organizers say they’re pleased Also say they are looking forward to next year with more prep time AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Despite almost being cancelled and taken over by a new organization a month before, the Oceanside Overdrive Summer Show and Shine was a big success last weekend. “It was a very nice event, I was

quite pleased with the outcome,” said Jesse Schroeder of Nanaimo’s campus radio station CHLY 101.7 FM which took over the event when the main organizer in recent years moved to the Lower Mainland. “It wasn’t as large as in past years,” Schroeder said, “but I think the car guys were quite appreciative the show was there for them, they really helped out and there was a lot of patience.” He admitted with four weeks organizing time, some details fell through,
but he said doesn’t believe that hurt anything in the big picture and said he believes it was an important event for the town that brought a lot of visitors in to local hotels and “the vendors really appreciated the chance to do some business.” Although early, he said they are already looking forward to doing it again next year with considerably more time to prepare. The car awarded Tops in Show was a 1960 Corvette owned by Peter Seward of Nanaimo.
