NATIONAL OBITUARIES KOCH, DAVID — 1938 – 2013 David passed away suddenly of natural causes at home on July 26th, at the age of 75. He is lovingly remembered by daughters Dana and Colleen; his sister Sandra Erdman (Alvin) and family Neal, Wayne, and Colin; and his loving companion Lorraine Silbernagel. He is predeceased by his wife Peggy (2006). David was born in Kelowna and soon moved to the small mining community of Allenby close to Princeton, BC. He bussed to Princeton for school where he met Peggy, his wife of 48 years. Soon after high school graduation, David and Peggy were married and they began their life together in Vancouver. He worked for a brief time at BC Tel before taking his X-Ray Technician training and moving to Trail, BC in 1963. Dana and Colleen were born in Trail before 1969 when the family moved to Kamloops where David became manager of the X-Ray department at Royal Inland Hospital. David retired in 1996 and he and Peggy were off and running on their many retirement plans – golfing, RVing, winters in Arizona. After Peggy’s death in 2006, David maintained his bright, energetic outlook that we so loved, and he was blessed to have met his companion Lorraine with whom he continued his retirement adventures. His daughters have always been a source of pride and joy – Dana lives in Kamloops and Colleen in Vancouver. David was delighted at having Dana close by and loved Colleen’s visits where they would spend weeks together. David was a wonderful father, a devoted and loving spouse during Peggy’s long-term illness, and a cherished friend to those who knew him well. He loved to have a good time, could talk your ear off, and was not afraid to call bullshit when he saw it. David will be greatly missed by his many friends and groups to which he belonged, including: Jaycees, St. Andrews Lutheran Church Congregation, Juniper Sams, the Casa Grande gang, Blazer Boosters, Kamloops Golf and Country Club members, Friendship Fishing Stag and RIH retirees. Father. Husband. Brother. Friend. We loved him so dearly. David’s Memorial will be on August 9th at 10:00 am at the TRU Grand Hall, 900 McGill Road, Campus Activity Centre, Kamloops, BC. Donations in David’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Kamloops Funeral Home 250-554-2577 Condolences may be sent to the family from www.kamloopsfuneralhome.com *** HEARN, ALBERT WILFRED — HEARN, Albert Wilfred - of Salmo passed away in Nelson, BC on July 27th, 2013 at the age of 95. Also, thanks to our Salmo Team: Maggie Marsh, Donna Hutchman, Shauna Lovell, and Duncan Mackay & Tracy Davies and staff, for all you did to help us care for Dad so he could stay at home. Your expertise and support has been immeasurable. We love you, Dad, it seemed too soon to lose you, but we know you were tired and ready to go. I’m sure Mom welcomed you with open arms. You waited a long time to see your lady again. We will miss you forever. Our lives will never be the same without you.

Alberta Mounties fire guns during roadside stop Police watchdog investigates use of force on three separate incidents BY ROB DRINKWATER THE CANADIAN PRESS

WETASKIWIN, Alta. - Days after a deadly shooting in Toronto sparked a debate over police use of force, Alberta’s police watchdog is looking into three separate incidents that saw officers use their firearms or a Taser. The latest incident in Alberta happened Saturday night when police say an officer with the Wetaskiwin RCMP detachment pulled over a suspected impaired driver near Ma Me O Beach, south of Edmonton. RCMP say there was an altercation and the officer shot two men

who were in the car. A 30-year-old man from Pigeon Lake, Alta., died and a 41-year-old man, also from Pigeon Lake, was transported to hospital in Edmonton. On Friday, RCMP used a Taser on a 27-year-old man during an arrest in Leduc, Alta. The man died Sunday morning. On Thursday, R-CM-P in Grande Cache shot and wounded a man who has since been identified by family as Curtis Hallock, a regular character on the reality TV show “Mantracker.” The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which reviews incidents involving police that result in death or serious injury, is conducting independent investigations into all three inci-

dents. The head of the agency cautioned about reading too much into the incidents when asked by a reporter whether the public should question its confidence in police. “I don’t think generally speaking the public needs to be concerned about being stopped,” Clifton Purvis told a news conference on Sunday. “In fact, I think probably in Canada we’re one of the very few jurisdictions worldwide where your first reaction when you get pulled over by police isn’t fear, it’s ‘Oh gosh, I got a ticket.”’ The debate over how much force police should use was propelled into the national spotlight last week after a fatal shooting in Toronto.

VIA RAIL

Security measures eyed BY JIM BRONSKILL

THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA - Taking a train in Canada could soon become more like boarding an airplane as Via Rail considers greater scrutiny of checked baggage, more inspections by sniffer dogs and security checks on passengers. Jacques Gagnon of Via Rail says the measures are in direct response to the alleged terrorist plot to derail a train that led to arrests in April. Raed Jaser, 35, of Toronto, and Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, face terrorism-related charges for allegedly plotting to derail a Via passenger train. Via took some initial steps to beef up security, and also set up a group to study further changes.
