Campaign funds critical-care equipment BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

Anyone who has sent a critically-ill loved one out of the region for treatment, knows first-hand the heartbreak and stress it can bring to a family. The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) foundation has launched its new project, the “Critical Care Campaign,” with a goal to provide a higher quality of sustainable care to critically-ill patients in hopes of reducing the need for transport outside the region. The $500,000 campaign is expected to span two years, with a goal to expand and upgrade equipment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Room (ER), and for the High Acuity Response Team (HART) at KBRH.

“KBRH plays a critical role in the network of acute care services and is the receiving hospital for patients requiring a higher level of care,” explained Lisa Pasin, KBRH foundation director. “The upgraded equipment purchased through the Critical Care Campaign will be used to deliver complex care to our sickest, most critically-ill patients,” she said. “And we will be supporting our sickest patients and their families by providing a higher level of complex care right here in our communities.” For Ben Olsen, a one-year member of HART, upgraded equipment means providing top-of-the-line care for patients and improved support to doctors and nurses spread thin in rural communities.

HART, an Interior Health program, works both inhospital and in partnership with BC Ambulance Services to attend to acute patients in rural and remote health sites. The team of RNs and respiratory therapists look to stabilize patients, and avoid hospital transfer, or act as inter-facility transporters to a higher level of care. “Providing care to patients through HART in the hospital ER is rewarding,” said Olsen. “And we also travel to remote facilities that may be staffed by only one doctor or nurse. “We help to stabilize the patient and provide support to the medical staff and alleviate doctor and nurse fatigue.” Dr. Scot Mountain, ICU medical director at KBRH,

said that maintaining a high level of critical care in the Kootenay Boundary saves family members the stress and expense of travelling to Kelowna or Vancouver. “We have the knowledge and ability to provide critical care at the same level that patients in Kelowna or Vancouver receive,” he said. “What we now need is the equipment and facilities to support our team.” Equipment upgrades for the ER include a trauma stretcher, overhead lights for the trauma bay and a glidescope to assist intubating patient airways. HART equipment needs include a transport stretcher, life-pack monitor/defibrillator, and adult and child ventilators. See GOLF, Page 3

It was hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk for most of July in Greater Trail. But if cooking wasn’t on the list, then chilling poolside probably was because July was two degrees warmer than average, and the hottest on record since 2007. Continued high pressure brought dry and very warm conditions, with 18 of the 31 days reaching temperatures exceeding 30 degrees, according to Ron Lakeman, forecaster for the Southeast Fire Centre. Canada Day kicked off the month with sun-filled celebrations in Trail, but the following day, (July 2) brought the hottest day with a temperature of 38.3 C. Although that is a new high for July 2, the monthly temperature on record remains 39.9, which was set on July 30, 2003. The heat wave let up only four days when much-needed rain doused one of the driest months on record. An upper trough and its band of thundershowers on July 17, accounted for 70 per cent of the total rainfall (14 mm), explained Lakeman. The overall rainfall was 18 mm, 35 per cent less 51 mm, the regular measurement recorded in July. While the heat and sere was ideal for basking on the beach, the hot temperatures put Greater Trail at a higher risk of forest fires. “The fire danger risk is unusually high in Greater Trail, which is a direct result of extended high temperatures,” said Jordan Turner, fire information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre. “Forest fuels, such as dead branches and pine needles, dried out rapidly and left the area looking like it usually does midAugust.” As July melded into the August long weekend, unsettled weather brought thunder pack and lightning, conditions notorious for sparking forest fires. According to bcwildfire.ca, the only current wildfire of note burning in the region is the Perry Ridge fire in the Slocan Valley, 4.5 km west of Winlaw. By Monday, that fire had burned 65 hectares and was reported to be 20 per cent contained. See COOLER, Page 3

Short notice closures and detours concern West Trail residents By Sheri Regnier Times Staff

West Trail residents may be using the “Italian Highway” or taking a precarious detour through Green Avenue to get downtown these days. The city informed the public Thursday that the lower Glover Road from Green Avenue to Victoria Street closed that day, with no entry or exit for pedestrians and vehicles, due to construction of the Victoria Street Corridor project. The notice wasn’t received soon enough for one resident living in the area. “I got out of work that day (Thursday) and went to drive home only to find the area blocked off without notice,” said West Trail resident Errol Frisk. “I understand that we need to get the work done, but to block off a major artery into West Trail without telling us sooner was

This is second week into the $1.6 million project, which includes curb/ gutter and sidewalk removal and replacement, utility improvements, pedestriancrossing enhancements, site furniture and decorative landscape planter features from the bridge up to Glover Road.

Kids find $100 worth of cocaine

THE CANADIAN PRESS Police say two children playing outside their Nelson, B.C., home found far more white powder than their chalk game could generate. Nelson police Sgt. Brian Webber says the children, aged three and six, found a small, plastic bag of cocaine on the ground. Webber says the older child took the bag to his parent, who suspected that it was an illegal drug and brought it to police. A test confirmed the bag contained about $100-worth of powder cocaine. Webber says if the children had been curious and ingested the cocaine, the incident would have taken a decidedly different tone.

Cleanup continues on Slocan River the Nelson Star Slocan Valley residents unable to use their water following a fuel spill last month can now visit Winlaw elementary school for access to water, showers, washrooms, and disaster relief personnel. Executive Flight Centre, which owned the tanker that spilled its load of jet fuel into Lemon Creek, has opened what it calls a “community resiliency centre.” The facility opened this morning. Hours for the showers and toilets are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. while disaster response services are available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. But a Winlaw man says while it’s a nice gesture, it’s not really what affected residents need most. “I don’t want to diminish it, but if they wanted to help us, our health should be monitored and finances made available to compensate

us, because it was humancaused,” Michael Kaye told the Star. “The community wants hands-on help with their yards and animals that are badly affected.” Kaye, who lives around the corner from the school, said he feels “abandoned, stranded, and abused” since the spill. Although he has a deep well and therefore his water was not affected, he says the fumes took a toll on his lungs, leaving him with a sore throat, headaches, and nausea. “Nobody’s come to my door asking me how my health is. They need to go to each address, especially those closest to Lemon Creek.” (Interior Health says it is not going door-to-door, and tells residents to be wary of anyone doing so who claims to be with them. More on that below.)

However, shallow wells close to the creek or rivers, particularly those in gravel or sandy soils, may be affected. The health authority says residents shouldn’t use their well water if there is a fuel smell in the well or at any tap. Garden vegetables, fruit, eggs, and dairy milk contacted by the fuel vapour are safe to consume as long as

From page 1 Although this week calls for a reduced chance of thundershowers and temperatures in the low 30s, Lakeman said the month may end up being cooler and wetter than normal. A moist airmass flowing up from the south may put a damper on summer-like conditions as early as the weekend, said Lakeman. “There are growing indications that August is going to be cooler than usual with more unsettled weather on the way,” he added.

they don’t smell like fuel or have a fuel sheen, Interior Health said. But they recommend washing fruit and vegetables thoroughly — easier said than done given that many residents aren’t able to use their tap water. Swimming and boating is also banned on the affected waterways until further notice, both due to the public safety hazard and the presence of the response teams and containment booms. At a meeting last Tuesday, the health authority suggested it would be five to ten days before the Do Not Use order is lifted. Potable water is available at fire halls in Winlaw, Passmore, and on Kennedy Road at Lemon Creek Lodge. The tanks are being filled three times per day. However, due to repeated vandalism, the tank at Crescent Valley has been removed.

From page 1 To improve technology to the ICU, a sonosite ultrasound machine, cardiac monitors, specialty beds, and a bariatric ceiling lift are included in equipment upgrades. The Critical Care Campaign swung into gear at the KBRH Golf Classic in July, when $29,000 in donations were received. For more information and to donate, call the foundation at 364-3424 or email info@kbrhhealthfoundation.ca. Formerly called the Trail Regional Hospital Foundation, the KBRH foundation is in its 25th year of raising money to advance health care in the Kootenay Boundary. The Foundation revenue, over $12 million to date, is generated through donations from private and corporate donors. Funding priorities include raising endowed gifts and annual funds to support health care equipment needs, staff education, and special initiatives to enhance health care through the Trail hospital and other Kootenay Boundary facilities.

Vancouver Island communities that felt the quake included Port Alice, Port McNeill, Port Hardy, Tahsis, Sointula and Alert Bay. Residents living in small communities on Nootka Island felt the quake as well. The quake was

caused by ocean plates rubbing together in a region known as the Nootka fault zone, said Cassidy. “This is one of the seismic hotspots along the west coast,” he said. “We tend to get a band of seismicity along the region where those two ocean plates meet, and that’s where today’s earthquake occurred, it’s a boundary between those two ocean plates.” Although the earlymorning quake didn’t cause any damage or injuries, it was a reminder of seismic activity in the area, said Cassidy. “We live in a very active region. This is a direct result of plate movement,” he added.

VANCOUVER Changing the way aircraft are designed to save lives by limiting fires after plane crashes wouldn’t be simple, nor would it be the most effective way to reduce aviation fatalities, a senior official with Transport Canada says. Martin Eley was responding to a scathing report from the Transportation Safety Board that argued two pilots might still be alive if the federal government heeded recommendations that date back seven years. The safety board’s report last week probed an October 2011 crash near Vancouver’s airport, in which two pilots were killed and seven passengers were seriously injured when a turboprop plane slammed into a road while preparing for an emergency landing. The board’s report concluded the pilots

could have survived the crash, but instead, a cockpit fire fuelled by arcing wires connected to the plane’s battery left them with fatal burns. An investigator told a news conference that Transport Canada has repeatedly ignored recommendations first issued in 2006 to prevent or reduce the severity of post-crash fires, including introducing technology to disconnect aircraft batteries upon impact. Eley, Transport Canada’s director general of civil aviation, said it would take significant research to evaluate whether such changes would even work, as well as the co-operation of foreign regulators. He said Transport Canada, as well the U.S.based Federal Aviation Administration and regulators in Europe, have instead focused their resources on preventing crashes in the first place, identifying the issues most associated with fatal crashes and concentrating on those. For example, Eley said half of all aviation fatalities are linked to either the pilots’ loss of aircraft control, controlled flight into terrain, or poor response to engine failure.

NATIONAL OBITUARIES KOCH, DAVID — 1938 – 2013 David passed away suddenly of natural causes at home on July 26th, at the age of 75. He is lovingly remembered by daughters Dana and Colleen; his sister Sandra Erdman (Alvin) and family Neal, Wayne, and Colin; and his loving companion Lorraine Silbernagel. He is predeceased by his wife Peggy (2006). David was born in Kelowna and soon moved to the small mining community of Allenby close to Princeton, BC. He bussed to Princeton for school where he met Peggy, his wife of 48 years. Soon after high school graduation, David and Peggy were married and they began their life together in Vancouver. He worked for a brief time at BC Tel before taking his X-Ray Technician training and moving to Trail, BC in 1963. Dana and Colleen were born in Trail before 1969 when the family moved to Kamloops where David became manager of the X-Ray department at Royal Inland Hospital. David retired in 1996 and he and Peggy were off and running on their many retirement plans – golfing, RVing, winters in Arizona. After Peggy’s death in 2006, David maintained his bright, energetic outlook that we so loved, and he was blessed to have met his companion Lorraine with whom he continued his retirement adventures. His daughters have always been a source of pride and joy – Dana lives in Kamloops and Colleen in Vancouver. David was delighted at having Dana close by and loved Colleen’s visits where they would spend weeks together. David was a wonderful father, a devoted and loving spouse during Peggy’s long-term illness, and a cherished friend to those who knew him well. He loved to have a good time, could talk your ear off, and was not afraid to call bullshit when he saw it. David will be greatly missed by his many friends and groups to which he belonged, including: Jaycees, St. Andrews Lutheran Church Congregation, Juniper Sams, the Casa Grande gang, Blazer Boosters, Kamloops Golf and Country Club members, Friendship Fishing Stag and RIH retirees. Father. Husband. Brother. Friend. We loved him so dearly. David’s Memorial will be on August 9th at 10:00 am at the TRU Grand Hall, 900 McGill Road, Campus Activity Centre, Kamloops, BC. You waited a long time to see your lady again. We will miss you forever. Our lives will never be the same without you.

Alberta Mounties fire guns during roadside stop Police watchdog investigates use of force on three separate incidents BY ROB DRINKWATER THE CANADIAN PRESS

WETASKIWIN, Alta. - Days after a deadly shooting in Toronto sparked a debate over police use of force, Alberta’s police watchdog is looking into three separate incidents that saw officers use their firearms or a Taser. The latest incident in Alberta happened Saturday night when police say an officer with the Wetaskiwin RCMP detachment pulled over a suspected impaired driver near Ma Me O Beach, south of Edmonton. RCMP say there was an altercation and the officer shot two men

who were in the car. A 30-year-old man from Pigeon Lake, Alta., died and a 41-year-old man, also from Pigeon Lake, was transported to hospital in Edmonton. On Friday, RCMP used a Taser on a 27-year-old man during an arrest in Leduc, Alta. The man died Sunday morning. On Thursday, R-CM-P in Grande Cache shot and wounded a man who has since been identified by family as Curtis Hallock, a regular character on the reality TV show “Mantracker.” The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which reviews incidents involving police that result in death or serious injury, is conducting independent investigations into all three inci-

dents. The head of the agency cautioned about reading too much into the incidents when asked by a reporter whether the public should question its confidence in police. “I don’t think generally speaking the public needs to be concerned about being stopped,” Clifton Purvis told a news conference on Sunday. “In fact, I think probably in Canada we’re one of the very few jurisdictions worldwide where your first reaction when you get pulled over by police isn’t fear, it’s ‘Oh gosh, I got a ticket.”’ The debate over how much force police should use was propelled into the national spotlight last week after a fatal shooting in Toronto.

VIA RAIL

Security measures eyed BY JIM BRONSKILL

THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA - Taking a train in Canada could soon become more like boarding an airplane as Via Rail considers greater scrutiny of checked baggage, more inspections by sniffer dogs and security checks on passengers. Jacques Gagnon of Via Rail says the measures are in direct response to the alleged terrorist plot to derail a train that led to arrests in April. Raed Jaser, 35, of Toronto, and Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, face terrorism-related charges for allegedly plotting to derail a Via passenger train. Via took some initial steps to beef up security, and also set up a group to study further changes.

T

he ceremonies have become common at the B.C. legislature. Government officials and aboriginal leaders gather to celebrate resource sharing agreements that allow economic development in areas that need employment but are hampered by a century of uncertainty and dispute over treaties, or lack thereof. This approach emerged a decade ago with forest agreements. The B.C. Liberal government bought back timber cutting licences from big forest firms and made them available for community forests and aboriginal communities who claimed the areas as their traditional territories. Recently the approach was extended to mining revenues and water licence fees paid by private power developers. These are substantial steps forward for the only province in Canada in treaty limbo. $30 million in royalties for the Mount Milligan coppergold mine north of Prince George helped the McLeod Lake Indian Band recover from the pine beetle and forestry slump that devastated its business base. After many years of struggle, Mount Milligan expects to go into production this year. Another agreement with Kamloopsarea communities shared revenues from an expanded Afton mine. Perhaps the most ambitious agreement was concluded in March of this year when the government signed a deal with the Tahltan Nation for mining and hydroelectric development in remote northwestern B.C. The deal clears the way for a major extension of the BC Hydro grid to power the Tahltan village of Iskut and also the Red Chris metal mine, opening up the region to other mining and hydro potential as well. To get that deal, the province put up $20 mil-

lion last year to buy back Shell Canada’s coalbed gas leases in the Klappan region, headwaters of the Nass, Skeena and Stikine Rivers. Those leases had become a target of inter-

TOM

national protest. Even after these expensive concessions, it would be an error to conclude that all is well between the Tahltan and the province. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson questioned Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad on this point during the recent legislature session. The Tahltan Central Council was pleased about

shared decision-making on resource projects, until they found out that B.C. had handed the environmental assessment of a new open-pit coal mine over to the federal government. The proposed mine is in the Klappan, known around the world as the Sacred Headwaters. Rustad said shared decision-making deals such as the Tahltan agreement do not cover activities of the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. Whether the review of that coal mine is federal, provincial or combined, it requires extensive consultation with affected parties. That’s great, but all that goodwill could evaporate quickly if a coal mine ends up getting a permit despite Tahltan objections. Rustad’s Nechako Lakes constituency is also a focal point for oil and gas pipeline proposals. Donaldson highlighted another problem. Last year the government signed a reconciliation agreement with

the Gitanyow First Nation near Terrace, one of many communities struggling to get through the B.C. treaty negotiation process. That agreement included a joint land-use plan. Then the Environmental Assessment Office asked the Gitanyow for its input on proposed gas pipelines through its territory, to feed the government’s liquefied natural gas plans. Again, the joint landuse plan has no provision for pipelines. The Gitanyow hereditary chiefs wrote to the B.C. government in July, threatening to go to court over the pipeline proposal and questioning the value of their hard-won reconciliation agreement. Resource revenue sharing agreements and shared land-use plans are well-intentioned and represent real progress. But these situations show how fragile they are. Letters & Opinion Letters to the editor

Better police training would help prevent deadly shootings An editorial from the Halifax Chronicle Herald Watching the video of the last moments of Sammy Yatim’s life is a sad, discouraging exercise. Sammy was the 18-year-old who exposed himself and drew a knife, reportedly a three-inch blade, on a Toronto streetcar late Friday night. Despite videos from a security camera and a bystander, we don’t know exactly what the teen was doing when he was shot by an officer with six years’ experience, but many people question whether the officer, a few feet away, had to shoot to kill. The police can be heard repeatedly shouting at Sammy to put down his knife as the teenager talks back, advances and is shot. There’s no indication that police tried to defuse the situation, calm the teen down, bring in a specialized crisis unit or use tear gas to disable him. We don’t know what possessed Sammy to draw a knife on a streetcar that night, and then, faced with a half-dozen armed officers, refuse to drop his knife. You have to wonder: if a

highly persuasive officer with more experience, a longer fuse and an understanding of a teenager’s sometimes impulsive thinking had been present, would the outcome have been different? I would like to think so. Police are taught to act decisively when threatened but when the aggressor is more confused than criminal, the results can be tragic. A 2011 study by the Mental Health Commission of Canada found that the mentally ill are “overrepresented in police shootings, stun gun incidents, and fatalities.” About a third of police shootings in Canada result in the injury or death of people who are or may be mentally ill, says Vancouver criminologist Rick Parent. This case, the Robert Dziekanski stun-gun case in the Vancouver airport in 2007 and the shooting and killing of a mentally ill man armed with two pairs of scissors earlier this year in Toronto raise questions about whether police are adequately trained to respond to situations involving young people, the mentally ill, the intellectually challenged, people

impaired by alcohol or drugs or, in the case of Dziekanski, someone who doesn’t speak English. Police must be able to protect themselves and others when someone is intent on killing or hurting others and officers must use their judgment when assessing whether someone is an immediate threat. Better education doesn’t always equal good judgment, but it helps. In Canada, most police forces require post-secondary education of less than a year. Parole officers, in contrast, need a four-year university degree. Police are licensed to carry deadly weapons and use them if they feel someone is a threat to themselves or others. That’s a lot of power to give someone who might not have the education, maturity and emotional detachment under pressure to match. We pay police well. The officer who killed Sammy made more than $105,000 a year, and in Halifax, a constable with four years’ experience earns more than $80,000 a year. So is six months or less in the classroom and three months of on-the-job training - current training for a Toronto police cadet - enough?

Trudeau’s pot stance is refreshing An editorial from the Kitchener-Waterloo Record Legalizing marijuana use in Canada could be the best way, and maybe the only way, to protect children inclined or forced to use the stuff. That’s the view of Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, and the only Canadian political figure of note to have the guts to speak to the issue. Immediately and predictably attacked by his political opponents, Trudeau is none the less right to suggest that we, as a society, need to consider new approaches to an ages old problem. The issue is far too complex to address in a short column, but we can agree there is a need to explore alternatives to our current way of dealing with drugs. The argument for legalization would primarily be an

acknowledgement of failed social policy. It is a fact, even a sad one, that human beings will explore the use of substances that alter their state of mind. It is certainly sad that many millions of North Americans live desperate lives as a result of overuse and resulting addiction. The question of what is to be done about it is challenging. It was U.S. president Richard Nixon who established the socalled “war on drugs” in the 1970s, which beefed up policing and military activities in the United States and in countries around the world that supplied drugs to American users. That “war,” as Trudeau rightly suggested, has been a complete, abject, costly, failure on all levels. Drug use is more rampant now than then. Highly militarized and monumentally wealthy cartels are also trafficking in armaments and humans,

as well as drugs. Our response politically has been to spend even more money, only to see 50,000-plus people killed in Mexico alone over the past halfdozen years. Marijuana is the most widely used illicit substance on the planet, driving an underground industry in the billions. Making its use legal could severely impact gang activity everywhere. Selling it as we do alcohol and cigarettes would allow for limits on strength and additives, and control in sales to minors. Tobacco-styled warnings could be put on packages, and driving under the influence treated severely. The billions of dollars generated in taxes could be used to treat addictions for all kinds of drug use and pay for public education campaigns. Trudeau should be applauded for having the courage to address the issue.

Stingrays impressive at regional meet

Marvin Beatty- Greenwood photo, relay teams submitted

The Trail Stingrays’ Diego Greenwood raced to silver in the 200 IM to go along with a gold and a second silver, while the Div. 4 girls and Div. 5 boys relay teams were double gold medal winners in the medley and freestyle relays at the Kootenay Regional Swim Meet in Castlegar on the weekend. By Jim Bailey

Times Sports Editor

The Trail Stingrays swam to strong finishes in the pool on the weekend at the Kootenay Regional Swim Meet in Castlegar. A total of 14 Stingray swimmers competed in the event and came away with 25 individual medals, five relay medals, and a number of personal best times. “It went very well,” said Stingrays’ coach Samme Beatson. “The Stingrays had an amazing swim meet. Everybody brought their best effort and turned in very good results.” Indeed, the Stingrays’

coach led by example winning two gold medals in 50 and 100-metre butterfly and two silver in 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke in Division 7. Beatson met provincial qualifying times in every race, and is a multiple medal winner at past provincial meets, yet the dedicated coach and competitor prefers to focus on the accomplishments of her swimmers. Every Stingray swimmer qualified for the provincial meet by finishing in the top three or by meeting the provincial qualifying times, either individually or in the relay, said

Beatson. “I knew that we would do well but I didn’t know we would do so well; I am really proud of the results that came out that.” Four of the top Trail Stingray swimmers, Elijah Grebe, Juliana Zhou, Diego Greenwood, and Johnny Hodgkins, will attend the B.C. Summer Swimming Association provincials Aug. 16-18 at the Spani Outdoor pool in Coquitlam. “There will be lots of tough competition, overwhelming in fact, so we hope to have everyone prepared for that,” added Beatson.

Grebe took home four medals at the regionals, racing to two gold in 50 and 100-m freestyle and two silver in 50 fly and 100 breastroke. In Div. 2 girls, Zhou claimed silver medals in 50-m breaststroke and 50 fly, and a bronze in 50 back, while Hodgkins placed second in 50 back with a provincial qualifying time, and third in 100 free. Greenwood sprinted to gold in Div. 4 50 free, and captured two silver medals in 100 free and the 200-m Individual Medley. Page Marrandino came third in Div. 2 girls 100

free, while in Div. 4 girls, Keandra Billingsley won three bronze medals in 50 and 100 free, and 50 fly, and Nicole Merry placed third in 200 IM. Daniel Merry was also a triple medal winner in Div. 5 boys, taking first in 50 fly, and third in 100 fly and 100 back. Sam Grebe rounded out the impressive performances with gold in Div. 8 100 breaststroke, and three silver medals in 50 and 100 free, and 50 fly. The Div. 4 girls relay team comprised of Georgia Merry, Kayla Fraser, Nicole Merry and Billingsley

swam to gold in both the medley relay and the freestyle relay, while Melissa Pitman, Marrandino, Maddy Fraser, and Zhou placed third in the Div. 4 girls medley relay. Not to be outdone, the Div. 5 boys relay team of Elijah Grebe, T.J. Worsley, Greenwood, and Daniel Merry won first place in both the freestyle and medley relays. “I am very proud of the team, although it was quite a bit smaller than it was last year especially those attending the swim meets, but for the number of swimmers we had, it was very, very successful.”

Greater Trail trio takes top spot in team sprint competition

By Times Staff A trio of Greater Trail Swim Club members cruised to first place in the team sprint at the 31st Nelson Cyswog’n’Fun Triathlon Sunday at Lakeside Rotary Park. The team comprised of Eden Kormendy of Fruitvale, Jackson Konkin of Trail, and Adrian Hamilton of Rossland raced to top spot in a sizzling 63 minutes. Kormendy completed the 500 metre swim, while Hamilton tackled the 22-kilometre bike, and

Konkin the five-km. run. Meanwhile, Trail’s Gerald Klassen and Graham Cocksedge of Powell River teamed up to take first place in the team Olympic course event that entails a 1.5-km swim, a 39-km Bike, and a 10 km run. Nelson’s Goggles Gear and Gatorade made up of Hannah DeVries, John DeVries and Anthony Maley came second. After finishing second in last year’s race, Eddie Smith of

Penticton nipped Gary Wade of Kelowna to claim victory in the men’s Olympic course triathlon, while Sarah MacArthur of Calgary won the women’s

race. Stephanie Hall of London was a close second behind MacArthur while 2011 champion Kelly Geisheimer of Rossland placed third.

In the short course race Ian Sharp captured the men’s crown after Connor Breitkreuz of Robson was disqualified for missing a turn. Sharp flew through

A-Rod appeals

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Baseball commissioner Bud Selig banned Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez for 211 games starting Thursday through the entire 2014 season, while 12 players including Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta and Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz accepted 50-game suspensions on Monday over their ties to the Biogenesis of America clinic and performance enhancing drugs. All players targeted for drug suspensions other than Rodriguez accepted 50-game penalties from Major League Baseball. All-Stars Cruz of Texas, Peralta of Detroit and Everth Cabrera of San Diego are among the 12 who accepted penalties Monday. Others include Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli and outfielder Fernando Martinez; Philadelphia pitcher Antonio Bastardo; Seattle catcher Jesus Montero; New York Mets infielder Jordany Valdespin and outfielder Cesar Puello; Houston

pitcher Sergio Escalona; San Diego pitcher Fautino De Los Santos; and free agent pitcher Jordan Norberto. MLB informed the Yankees on Sunday that Rodriguez will be suspended for his links to the Biogenesis of America clinic, which was accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. Rodriguez is appealing the decision so, in a bizarre turn of events, may actually play in the Yankees game Monday in Chicago. By terms of the joint drug agreement between the union and the league, Rodriguez has the right to play during appeal. Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz would conduct a hearing within 20 days, and deliver a ruling within 25 days after the hearing. Horowitz can find fully in favour of one side or another, or impose a lighter suspension. A suspension through 2014 would absolve the Yankees of approximately $36-million owed Rodriguez over that period.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Ellen DeGeneres will be back for a second time to host the Academy Awards. Producers announced her selection Friday. DeGeneres hosted the show in 2007, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance. This year’s host, Seth MacFarlane, drew mixed reviews for an edgy performance. He had already taken himself out of the running for a return engagement next year. The Oscars will be held March 2.

‘2 Guns’ shoots to No. 1 position By Derrik J. Lang

MONday & Movies MONDAY EVENING # $ %

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES - “2 Guns” is No. 1 at the weekend box office. The Universal action film starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg pulled the trigger to capture the top spot with $27.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. “2 Guns” is based on a graphic novel of the same name and features Washington as a DEA agent and Wahlberg as a Naval Intelligence officer who must team up for an undercover operation involving drug traffickers and the CIA. Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, said “2 Guns” opened at the studio’s expectations and attributed the film’s success to Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur and the first-time pairing of Washington and Wahlberg. “It was super casting,” she said. “There was remarkable chemistry. The two of them work so well together. You see it on screen. Baltasar really gave them the energy to be able to do what they did in this film.” Fox’s Japan-set superhero flick “The Wolverine” starring Hugh Jackman as the clawed warrior scratched out the No. 2 spot with $21.7 million in its second weekend, bringing the Marvel icon’s total domestic haul to $95 million. “The Smurfs 2” launched in the No. 3 position with $18.2 million. While Sony’s kid-friendly computer-generated sequel based on the bluehued cartoon franchise debuted below expectations in North America, “Smurfs 2” earned $52.5 million in 43 international markets. “It is one of those films that seems to resonate on every continent,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution. “We have about 36 big territories to go, including China. They love the blue ones.” The Warner Bros. haunted house tale “The Conjuring” crossed the $100 million mark at No. 4 after exorcising $13.7 million in its third weekend. Elsewhere at the box office, Sundance Film Festival favourite “The Spectacular Now” starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley earned $190,000 in four theatres in its debut weekend.

We cannot alter our music in the middle of a set just because a guest who has had too much to drink comes up to us with a song request. If the bride and groom took the time to specify the songs they do and don’t want to hear, they probably are not going to be happy if we suddenly start playing “The Chicken Dance.” One other tip: Talking to us while we are in the middle of a song is not a good idea. Please wait until we are on a break. -Frustrated Bandleader Dear Frustrated: Excellent suggestions, and here’s one from us: Can you please not set the amplifiers to 11? Dear Annie: Recently, our beautiful, intelligent, kind, responsible 20-year-old daughter told us she is a lesbian. “Sharon” has been sorting this out alone for the past two years, which breaks my heart. She told us that she has prayed not to be this way, tried dating men and even came up with a plan to move out of the country. Sharon’s father, siblings and I were surprised, but have assured her that we are thankful she told us so she can truly be herself and be happy. We love her just the same. However, Sharon has not told the rest of our family. Other relatives have made it clear that they believe gays and lesbians are disturbed and disgusting individuals who are going to hell. They have, in fact, recently stated these vile opinions to Sharon when she was last visiting. She told me it felt as if she had been punched

this makes you freer in the future. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Your spiritual values have been growing and will continue to grow. This gives you a strong base to build on, which is a fortunate thing indeed. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Your relations with friends or perhaps a group are now meaningful in an obvious way. You have the respect of others that you’ve been working for -- at last. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) It is obvious to others that you are getting the appreciation you deserve for your efforts. Kudos, a raise, praise and the admiration of others are finally yours. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Whether through travel, publishing or exploring religion and philosophy, you now feel connected to important concepts and

beliefs. This could be the touchstone that is a turning point for you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Inheritances or a change in the wealth of those who are close to you or changes in your own debt structure are significant now. You see where your responsibilities are and where they are not. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Important partnerships

are evolving to a point now where you know what you want and you know what you can get. You will either move forward to fulfill your dreams or step away. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Improvements in your job that you had hoped for now look to be within your reach. Similarly, improvements to your health can be liberating and joyful.

PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Romantic relationships as well as your own quest for expressing your creativity are culminating now. You see what is possible. You see that what you wanted is doable.
