As owner of The British Store on Columbia Street, Andy Bradshaw was all prepared for the royal birth. He wasn’t prepared for what hit his Twitter account. Bradshaw was up real early Monday, 4 a.m., working in his shop when the twittersphere went wild with the news Kate was in

labour. He’d already pre-ordered a bunch of commemorative stuff—tea cup plates, trinket boxes, magnets, coffee mugs. His suppliers were all set to place the first picture of the new heir to the throne, Prince George, on them and ship them to him within two days. “They’re really going to town with this because this is huge because of the social media side of this,” said Bradshaw, who will also supply most of British Columbia with the memorabilia.

The tweets came fast and furious, a rate of 20 per second he estimated. “After that it just kept going. Social media was just outstanding [Monday].” Social media, he said, is also a big reason the monarchy has become popular again in Canada. He said Prince William and Kate created a lot of goodwill in this country when they made a side trip to fire-ravaged Slave Lake, Alta., two years ago. “They really connected with people so4x1.25_book_drive_ad_final.pdf that’s why I think there’s a bigger following and a bigger

admiration for this couple,” said Bradshaw To honour the royal birth, Bradshaw’s Sherlock’s Cafe is holding a Royal Prince High Tea. “I’m selling the British culture. There’s not many shops that are doing that. From the Royal Wedding (April 2011) to the Queen’s 60th (2012) to the new baby, it’s been good. I don’t know what’s going to follow,” said Bradshaw, who noted the London Olympics also helped highlight all things 1 12-03-05 1:20 PM British.

A married couple has been chosen by the City of New Westminster to be the artists for the Wait For Me, Daddy public artwork in Downtown New Westminster. Veronica and Edwin Dam de Nogales, who have studios in Ontario and Barcelona, have been creating public sculptures together for the last 16 years. They’ve produced 28 in Canada, the United States and Europe, including the Canadian Voice of the Land monument in Queen’s Park, the Ontario legislature in Toronto. Wait For Me, Daddy is a historic and iconic photograph taken by Vancouver Province photographer Claude P. Dettloff on Oct. 1, 1940. It shows five-yearold Warren (Whitey) Bernard, who now lives in Tofino, escaping his mother Bernice’s grasp and stretching out to his father, Pte. Jack Bernard, as he marched by with his regiment down Eighth Street toward Columbia. It was featured in Life magazine and is the second-most requested photograph from the national archives.
