Sitting on the rocks enjoying the breeze off the ocean in front of a crackling fire, is a dwindling way to enjoy the summer months.

“I am pretty sure we are the only municipality that still allows beach fires in (Greater Victoria),” said Stephanie Dunlop, fire chief for Metchosin, who enjoys having beach fires herself. “I like seeing

two lovebirds having a little fire or a family with kids roasting marshmallows. That’s why we allow the fires.”

“There is nothing like a having a nice beach fire,” added Capt. Eric Meredith Taylor Beach is a popular beach fire spot in the rural district, but the Metchosin Fire Department may put a halt to the longtime summer tradition.

Firefighters are spending too much time cleaning up and extin-

guishing unattended beach fires as large as nearly four metres in diameter with multiple logs burning.

“The maximum size allows for the fires is two feet by two feet by two feet,” said Dunlop.

Anyone having a beach fire is encouraged to burn wood from home and refrain from using driftwood logs that can continue burning even after they appear to be out. Large flames and ocean winds can be a potentially dangerous

combination.

“Who ever is having these big fires is going to ruin it for all the other people,” said Meredith. “As long as the fires are small they are not a problem.”

Anyone having a fire is required to have at least a one-gallon bucket full of water nearby and all fires need to be fully extinguished.

The fire department has received complaints of children and dogs getting burned by smouldering debris in the morning.

“You need to douse,” Dunlop said, adding a fire is out when it is “cool to the touch.”

Beach fires are allowed on municipal beaches in Metchosin such as Taylor Beach, but Capital Regional Parks such as Witty or Albert Head lagoons do not allow the fires.

mages of fierce-eyed drill sergeants marching poor homesick teenagers until they faint from heat exhaustion is what many may imagine life in the cadets to be like.

Instead the summer camp at Albert Head Cadet Summer Training Centre puts safety first and considers each and every youth there on loan from their parents, to be returned in pristine condition and hopefully with some great experiences and a bunch of new friends.

Whatever the cadets are doing, the emphasis is always on having fun.

“I guess I wouldn’t really be enjoying it if I didn’t have fun,” said Jaden Powell, a cadet from Dawson Creek. “My favourite thing to do right now is rifle drill. I really enjoy the Kyle Wells challenge of it.”

Reporting Every year more than a thousand air force cadets gather at the Metchosin base to work their way through various levels of the program.

Cadets from all over the province attend the camp for two, three or six weeks depending on what year they are in and what course they’re participating in. They have a choice on what areas to specialize in, such as drill, survival, band or numerous other options.

For some of the new recruits, typically 12 or 13 years old, the camp is their first time away from home, which can be a trying experience.

Cpt. Amélie Leduc can relate.

“I remember crying to my mom ‘come and pick me up,’” she said. “I was 13 and I was crying on the phone. … The year after I did a three week course and I didn’t call her the whole

time.”

Leduc went on to get her pilots licence through the air cadets and is now employed by National Defence as a public affairs officer for the program.

“It gave me confidence, it gave me effective speaking. (It helps you to) get out of your shell and take charge.”

Cadets can also leave the camp early if they choose.

Older cadets, typically 17 or 18, have worked their way up to become instructors who teach the younger cadets. They are paid a modest daily wage and gain experience, which looks great on a resume.

Warrant officer second class Alistair White, 18, joined the cadets as a youth living in Midway, a town of about 600 people. He has attended cadet summer camps, first as a participant and now as an instructor, for seven years and had the opportunity to travel to Ontario and Quebec as a part of the program.

“I wasn’t a very popular kid in high school

or anything like that. It gave me that community to go to,” White said. “You build this selfconfidence in people. They put you in positions where you have to take charge of a situation and relay orders to people, and you’re learning, ‘hey, I can actually do those things.’ …

“If you told 12-year-old me I could do this I would not believe you.”

White plans to join the Canadian Forces, although he is the odd man out, with less than 10 per cent of cadets grads going on to join the armed forces.

Flight Sgt. Kayleigh Smith, 18, is a member of the 848 Royal Roads squadron based out of Langford spending her second year on staff at Albert Head. She joined because her brother had joined (he subsequently quit), and discovered she enjoyed making new friends and new experiences.

“I found there was actually way more than just a uniform,” Smith said.

Cadets must leave the program at age 19.

Smith hopes to join the Cadet Instructors Cadre, the command component of cadets, as she goes to university for studies in social work.

“I don’t want to leave. I feel like my time has come too soon.”

Some of the instruction in classroom based, with these air cadets learning about such things as propulsion or aerodynamics by making paper helicopters and miniature rockets, and part of it is outside, with drilling, an obstacle course (called the confidence course), biathlon (using air rifles) and other activities.

The cadets also help out in the community, most recently with a group heading to Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites to help get rid of invasive species of plants.

A 21-year-old man died after being pulled out of Thetis Lake on Saturday (July 20). West Shore RCMP received a 911 call at 12:21 p.m. about a swimmer at the View Royal lake who had vanished underwater and hadn’t resurfaced, said Sgt. Scott Braes of West Shore RCMP. The man had been pulled from the lake and CPR was being performed when police arrived. Emergency crews also tried to resuscitate the man before taking him to Victoria General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“There are mixed reports of whether he was a weak swimmer or if he could swim at all,” said Braes. “He certainly wasn’t a strong swimmer.”

The man, a 21-yearold exchange student from Saudi Arabia, was out in the lake floating on an air mattress before he went underwater. Police are not sure how he became separated from the floatation device.

West Shore RCMP ask people enjoying the outdoors this summer to be safe.

“If you are a nonswimmer or a poor swimmer don’t venture past mid-torso level,” Braes said.

“Wear a life jacket in a boat, canoe or anywhere the water is over your head. This is not just about Thetis, but any body of water.” charla@goldstream gazette.com

Rising BMX rider loses bike to thief

Crash diverts Colwood traffic

Firefighters extracted a man from his heavily damaged Volkswagen Cabriolet Saturday afternoon (July 20) after a single vehicle crash on Goldstream Avenue near Wale Road.

Traffic was diverted for about 45 minutes after a vehicle reportedly hit the cement centre divider, which caused it to head off the road and through a chain link fence.

“It is amazing no one else got injured in this incident,” said Cst. Alex Berube in a news release. “This collision could have had a much more dramatic outcome.”

The man was transported to Victoria General Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP say alcohol was a factor in the collision and are recommending alcohol related charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Metchosin road work gets OK

O.K. Industries Ltd. won the bid for Metchosin’s 2013 road resurfacing project for $72,451.50.

Malloch Road and Brookview Drive will be resurfaced this year.

Earlier in the month Air Cadet Thilina Rarnayake of Richmond was appointed camp warrant officer first class, the highest ranking cadet at the training centre.

He was picked from 80 who competed for senior camp positions.

arefully locking his prized BMX bike to the fence before hopping in the lake, Colin Barwick, felt confident his ride would be safe.

While swimming with a friend he periodically checked on the bike and longboard that were locked together, July 16.

Around 4 p.m., after being at the lake for a little more than an hour, Barwick was alarmed when he heard a familiar noise.

“My spokes were loose and made a clipping noise,” said the Victoria youth.

He ran after it as thief rode off.

“My hand was in reach of the back tire, but I didn’t want to wreck my hand,” said Barwick. “(The thief) had a pair of snips in his hand, he was probably just walking around looking for a bike.”

The bike is a Redman BMX with pink brake cables, white handlebars and a blue frame.

The tree management bylaw is being amended increasing the fine to $10,000 per violation up to a maximum of $100,000.

“The bylaw remains fundamentally unchanged you can still cut down 10 trees per acre,” said Mayor John Ranns adding some protected trees or cutting down more trees per acre would require an agricultural permit.

The district does have a protected tree list and added to the list is “any tree more than one-metre thick at chest height” Ranns explained. “Any tree on the protected list would need a permit.”

The change in bylaw is the result of a large tree cut that occurred last year.

“It happened in the uplands area. Someone went in and logged off a whole area ... It destroyed a trail and the value of the trial,” Ranns said.

The new addition to the bylaw is being created to deter people from illegally cutting down trees in the rural district.

“For some people the fine was just the price of doing business,” Ranns said. “Ninety-nine per cent of the people in Metchosin don’t need a tree bylaw and they are very responsible.”

The bylaw is still awaiting its fourth reading.

NDP panel will find fear works M

uch analysis and speculation has been done on how the B.C. Liberals scored a shocking, seemingly come-from-behind victory over the NDP in the last provincial election.

Guided by research being undertaken this summer by a diverse, five-person panel, the New Democratic Party plans to tackle the issue of just how they lost an election they had no business losing.

NDP president Moe Sihota, no stranger to the election process and campaigning, admitted his party must do some serious soul-searching to solve the riddle of how to get the better of the B.C. Liberals.

Many factors contributed to the loss of the NDP’s grip on the hearts and minds of the province’s voters.

There was leader Adrian Dix’s mid-campaign flip-flop on oil pipelines and the party’s lack of laserlike focus on a small number of issues while the Liberals focused on one: the economy. Even the lack of natural charisma of Dix himself helped create the perfect political storm.

The NDP can do all the analysis it wants to try and find answers. But the unpalatable fact that negative advertising works, especially when aimed at a relatively large number of undecided voters, is a reality the party must face for the next election.

Sihota acknowledged that both his party and the B.C. Liberals were surprised at the effectiveness of the governing party’s approach; the way it stirred up fear on the part of B.C. voters at the prospect of leaving the economy in the hands of the NDP. Putting it into business terms, the voting public in too many areas of the province –the Capital Region excluded – weren’t sold on the NDP brand. It may go against party philosophy, but perhaps the NDP needs to consult an image specialist before the next election.

One need only to look south of the border, to the last presidential election, to realize how well creating fear can work.

AW: No, never. They asked me to, and I said no, because I don’t believe in civil disobedience.

Plenty of consequences for B.C. marijuana users Re: Marijuana vote not a sure thing (Our View, July 17) This week the editorial staff at Victoria News draws our attention to the Sensible B.C. initiative.

Coming this fall to a province near you, its aim is to collect enough B.C. voter signatures to justify a cannabis referendum.

I am happy that the staff call this initiative a good thing. I am puzzled by their choice of focus: it may never fly; it may be symbolic at best. But I am astonished by their claim that

in B.C. we “buy, sell, grow, and consume without fear of serious consequences.”

If only it were true. British Columbians are charged for simple possession at double the rate of any other province – up over 88 per cent in the last decade according to the Vancouver Sun – 3,500 arrests in 2010, according to Dana Larsen.

A successful referendum would direct police resources away from persecuting cannabis users. We need this referendum, especially

in B.C. So don’t ask, “Will this fly?

Is this symbolic?”

between condoning marijuana use and protecting children from drugs. Decriminalization acknowledges the social reality of marijuana and frees users from the stigma of life-shattering criminal records. What’s really needed is a regulated market with age controls.

Separating the hard and soft drug markets is critical.

As long as organized crime controls marijuana distribution, consumers will continue to come into contact with sellers of hard

drugs like cocaine and heroin.

This “gateway” is a direct result of marijuana prohibition.

Marijuana is less harmful than legal alcohol; the plant has never been shown to cause an overdose death.

It makes no sense to waste tax dollars on failed marijuana policies that finance organized crime and facilitate the use of hard drugs. Drug policy reform may send the wrong message to children, but I like to think the children are more important than

Lack of voter support runs across the board

Re: Voters weren’t born yesterday (Letters, July 17) I’m afraid Joe Sawchuk missed the main point of my letter noting that the B.C. Liberals won the May 14 election with the support

of just 24 per cent of eligible voters. I didn’t claim this is unique to the B.C. Liberals.

Indeed, I noted in my letter that the NDP, Greens and B.C. Conservatives obtained “even more pathetically smaller shares of support from eligible voters.”

I am also well aware that different parties in other provinces – and successive Conservative and Liberal government federally – have won power with similarly meagre amounts of support from eligible voters.

My point is that winning parties of all political stripes shouldn’t be making ridiculous claims that they enjoy massive public support when their shares of the eligible vote are actually so shockingly low.

Jail adds ground-breaking biometric tech Wilkinson Road pilots biometric system connecting its inmates with court records Edward Hill News staff

The jail on Wilkinson Road is piloting a computer system that allows inmates easy access to their court documents using fingerprint scanning technology.

Corrections B.C. has rolled out a touch-screen computer terminal system at the Vancouver Island Regional Correction Centre in Saanich and the North Fraser Pretrial Centre, and at five parole offices in the province.

VIRCC has two terminals in the jail, which so far gives about 50 inmates computer access to their records.

Inmate identity is authenticated from their fingerprint, which is encrypted and linked with their files on a closed network within the Ministry of Justice. It’s the first system for inmates in Canada that uses biometric technology.

“This is ground-breaking. To our knowledge no other corrections jurisdiction in Canada has a system like this in place. We are pretty excited about leading the way,” said Marnie Mayhew, spokeswoman for B.C. Corrections.

laws. The ICON system itself doesn’t record actual fingerprints – it creates an encrypted string of characters based on the uniqueness of a fingerprint.

The system uses “off the shelf” fingerprint scanning technology, but B.C. Corrections and B.C. Shared Services branch created the back-end software that links existing offender and document databases with fingerprint data.

Staff and inmates at Wilkinson Road have given the system a thumbs-up so far, Young said. Beyond evidence documents, inmates can use it to review court orders, hearing dates, communicate with probation officers, and book medical appointments within the jail. It also eliminates the need for paper documents, which in a jail can be easily lost or stolen.

“Staff like it. It cuts down on routine questions and tasks, and allows staff to focus on supervision,” he said. “We’ve heard offenders like the fact they can look up their own information, and they’d like to see more services like this.”

The fingerprint system will also be used as an additional way to verify the identity of inmates during transfers in and out of jail, and interactions with medical personnel. “It makes sense before medications are issued that the nurse checks that it’s the right inmate,” Young said.

He also noted the computer network is an isolated system, and can’t be hijacked by an inmate to access the Internet or hacked from outside. At the same time, ICON is being assessed through the pilot projects to address security concerns.

Young said jurisdictions across Canada struggle with the problem of allowing inmates access to records but limiting access to computers, and are watching the rollout of ICON. “At some point you have to connect offenders to the electronic world. Where will we be 20 years from now?” Young said.

L

ocal musician Danton Jay is hard to pin down.

With a taste for travel and a broad musical background, it’s no wonder his debut solo album, Morcenx, is an exercise in diversity.

The songs on Morcenx, named for a small town on the west coast of France, range in genre from folk, rock, blues and jazz to spoken word over improvisational guitar, but the message is concise — Jay is a proponent of sustainability and is using his music to both entertain and enlighten, without being preachy.

“My key theory is that it doesn’t matter who’s telling them, if people hear something they’re more likely to reflect and act on it,”Jay says. “If it’s on the radio, people will hear it and hopeful reflect on it and enjoy the music, too.”

Jay is a UVic psychology grad who researched promotional methods and sustainability. He set out on a six-month journey through Europe to see theory put into practice.

It was that adventure that inspired Jay to write the songs on Morcenx. He spent the last month of his trip in France, holed up in an apartment writing.

The result is an album of expansive music and percipient lyrical content.

“This kind of music requires attention. It’s not for pre-drinking before the club,” he says.

Jay returned to Victoria, set up a recording studio in his apartment and started recording the album.

“I don’t have a dining room, I have a soundbooth,” he says.

He got permission from David Suzuki to use his essay “The fundamental failure of environmentalism” on his track Listen, which Jay reads over completely improvised guitar.

Jay is humble about his music and is all about the collective experience.

He’s not quick to be centre of attention or to take all the credit. He even goes as far as listing all the session musicians on the album right on the front of the CD jacket. And it’s an impressive list of local A-listers that includes the album’s co-producer Joby Baker (Alex Cuba, The Bills, The Cowboy Junkies, Mae Moore), Adam Sutherland (Armchair Cynics) and Julia Wakal (Aidan Knight, Bucan Bucan).

Jay has assembled a six-piece band for the CD release at the Copper Owl (1900 Douglas) Wednesday, July 24 that includes Nick La Riviere on trombone, Miguelito Valdez on trumpet, Chris Van Sickle on piano, Ian McElroy on bass and Andrew Rollins on drums.

After only one rehearsal, Jay was ecstatic about how well the band was coming together. “There’s so much going on. It’s exciting to hear all the parts together live. Everyone really owns their parts. Guitarist and 2013 VIMA Pop/Rock Album winner Wil, who lived in Calgary during his “formative years” says he’s playing the show for the people of Calgary. “My connection with the city is simple, it’s the people in it, the people who have lost everything and the people who are giving everything and that’s why it’s important for me to be involved,” he says.

On a hot spring afternoon, sunshine reflects off a framed drawing in EiraShay Barker-Hart’s grasp.

The 16-year-old smiles as she explains each element of the politically-charged piece, inspired by the proposed Enbridge pipeline.

“Back here we have the machine that’s building corporate lines,” she said. “Then the Earth, here, is crying and back here we have a jellyfish, which is a sign of polluted water. I’m trying to mirror the pain that the Earth feels and the anger and frustration that a lot “I don’t know of people are feeling.”

“I wish she was – EiraShay Barker-Hart my daughter,” said McCorry, who got to know Barker-Hart through the Creatively United For the Planet fashion show, while the Vic High student was building dresses of flower petals.

“Last year, EiraShay just sat on the grass and just kept painting. She didn’t need a chair or table or anything.”

Barker-Hart admitted being a little unprepared for her debut at the Brush Up, but found it to be a huge learning experience. The positive side of putting her work out there – including marketing herself as an artist – outweighed the sting of not making any sales during her first Brush Up. “It makes you so vulnerable,” she said. “It’s your work. It’s so much of you.”

The Grade 11 student grew up on Cortes Island and attended Linnaea, the Island’s alternative school, until Grade 8, an experience which exposed

her to an eclectic community of artisans.

“I like how she hasn’t become a big-city girl,” said McCorry, a photographer and creator of threedimensional paper casting cards. “She just continues to follow her heart and her passion and her love.”

Whether she’s making a Mexican-inspired selfportrait in oil soluble water colours, snapping photos on a Pentax K-1000, or constructing clothing from flower petals, Barker-Hart is open to just about anything artistically.

“I don’t know what my medium is yet, so I figured I’d try everything until I find the medium that fits. I change my mind all of the time.”

Though her approach may come off as fickle, her intentions behind the work are anything but.

“I like having an intention and a point to it, as opposed to something that’s just nice to look at. In the past I was just painting things that were fun to paint and I wasn’t comfortable pushing social barriers.”

The Oak Bay Community Artists Society launched the Bowker Creek Brush Up in 2005.

Youth artists – including high school students and young adults – are invited to join Barker-Hart from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Aug. 11 along Bowker Creek.

Sixteen-year-old Vic High student brings variety of styles, mediums to annual creekside art show

One colonist’s trash is another man’s treasure, given a century or so. Hunt around long enough in the Gorge Waterway and antique bottles can emerge from the muck.

For Reece Hygh, the Gorge remains a treasure trove of old handmade bottles and clay jugs produced in breweries and factories dating to the earliest days of Fort Victoria.

“The Gorge is one of the first places people partied. For Fort Victoria, the British colonists drank there and would toss in their bottles,” Hygh said. “You can still find really old bottles, embossed pop and beer bottles. We’ve found bottles marked ‘poison’. We’ve found U.S. Navy mustard bottles that date to 1858, dried mustard bottles.”

Probing the grasses and mud using a rake and a snorkel, Hygh and friend Chris Hill found a shard of a bottle stamped with ‘VB’ for Victoria Brewery, circa 1868.

That early brewery first used water from Swan Lake and then moved into downtown Victoria.

They’ve found ginger beer and pop bottles from Alex Phillips, the first bottler of soda pop in Western Canada, and from Christopher Morely, who had his factory in Waddington Alley in a building since refurbished into condos.

The practice of hunting through silt and muck is called mudlarking, and dates back two centuries to impoverished Brits who scavenged the shores of the Thames River.

Hygh, 54, has collected antique bottles for 40 years and enjoys the thrill of treasure hunting and its connection to local history.

“I’m a history buff. I like relics like embossed bottles from Victoria or Nanaimo or Vancouver or San Francisco,” he said. “I do this as a hobby. We are the keepers of relics. We keep them for a while, then pass them on.”

He normally hunts for old bottles “above the falls,” otherwise known as west of the Tillicum Bridge. “I walk the Gorge a couple times per year,” said Hygh, who lives in Nanaimo. “Other collectors walk it every day and still find stuff.”

Explore the unsung parks of Greater Victoria A handful of parks get major attention, but Greater Victoria has many hidden gems of park land Between provincial, Capital Regional District and municipal parks, Greater Victoria has swaths of green space and forests for residents to get their groove on.

But like politicians and ice cream flavours, some parks are more popular than others. A few attract hordes of visitors and dogs year-round, while others grow their trees in quiet serenity.

Take Francis/King regional park, neighbour to vast Thetis Lake regional park. Thetis, with its popular beach, deep lake, hiking loops and rocky vistas, attracts the most visitors out of any CRD park.

Secluded Francis/King sits in stark contrast to busy Thetis. The 107-hectare forest is accessed from Prospect Lake and Munn roads, scenic country lanes unto themselves, dotted with farms and estates, far from the highway or noise of the city.

Bear Hill Regional Park, a 48-hectare rectangle that stretches from the Pat Bay Highway to Bear Hill Road, may be small, but it offers forests of red cedar and

Douglas firs.

For people not afraid of elevation gain in their hike, grand vistas from its 220-metre summit overlook Saanich Peninsula farmland and is ideal for a picnic.

Lastly, and in terms of provincial

parks, Goldstream by far receives the most attention. It has its famed fish run, Mount Finlayson and an old-growth rain forest.

This overshadows John Dean Provincial Park in North Saanich, a 174-hectare space less ambitious in scope, but stocked with meadows and an old-growth forest atop Mount Newton.

Where Goldstream has its magnificent 100-year-old train trestle (on the park boundary), John Dean park has its novel radar dome and communications complex.

Beyond that, reasonably easy hiking trails lead to beautiful southern exposure bluffs offering panoramas of farmland and the billionaire playground of James Island. The view, though, is priceless. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Big four get their due 1930s-era track team now inducted into Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame

hey were the stars of the city, Victoria’s top athletes during a time of depression.

The YMCA’s track team from the 1930s was tops in the country.

Coached by YMCA physical director Travis Archie McKinnon, the group of short and midPaterson dle distance runners Reporting was led by 220-yard sprinter and quartermile (440-yard) specialist Joe Addison. (Races were done in yards and miles then.)

Half-mile runner Bill Dale and mile specialist Chuck Cunningham made up the core three with Addison, while a list of shortdistance sprinters each spent time as the team’s fourth man.

It’s been a long time coming, but the Y team are finally going into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame, part of the 2013 inductee group to be celebrated on Oct. 26.

“We originally wanted to put Bill Dale in about 12 years ago. He was still alive then, but when we sat down with him and told him our intentions, he refused,” said Dave Unwin, a Victoria sports archivist.

Unwin has long snooped out the history of athletes in the city. Dale sent Unwin on a new hunt, one that finally ended with a phone call last year.

“At first Bill told us about his brother Vic Dale and said Vic was more deserving, his brother being a great basketball player and all-around athlete. Then Bill explained that it was Addison who was the (Y team) ringleader.”

The only problem was Addison’s story ended in the Second World War. Unwin knew he was a policeman and a truant officer whose pay was split between the City of Victoria and the school district.

He wasn’t with the Victoria police department for long. He signed up with the army, transferred to the air force and was shot down in a bomber during the war.

Until a lucky turn of events, Addison’s story had disappeared from history.

But the word was out around Victoria that the GVSHOF was on the lookout for Addison’s family descendants, and in 2012 Addison’s nephew Roy Williams called Unwin.

“Just prior to Christmas I had a visit from Williams. He ... brought two boxes of Addison’s scrapbooks, photos and awards,” Unwin said.

The newspaper stories and information, most of it from the 1930s, suggested the Y team deserved to be in the hall of fame.

The Y team were generally known as a group of four, with a frequently changing sprinter.

It’s believed Lynn Patrick was the team’s first sprinter, son of Lester and brother of Murray (Muzz), but Lynn left for the New York Rangers where he won the Stanley Cup as a player, with Muzz on his team and dad Lester behind the bench.

Navy man Owen Bentley also took a turn as the sprinter, as did Paul Rowe, who went onto win the Grey Cup with the Calgary Stampeders. There was Noel Morgan, an allaround sportsman, and lastly, Bruce Humber, who went to university in Washington state and was the only member to represent Canada at the Olympics when he went to the 1936 Berlin Games.

Addison had been to the 1934 Empire Games, and should have qualified for the 1936 Olympics, as well as Dale, Unwin found.

“Addison, Dale and Humber went to the Canadian qualifying championships in Toronto on the way to Olympics (in 1936).

When they got there it rained all weekend,” Unwin said.

“Addison did both the quarter and hurdles but had bad luck though he could have qualified for both events based on his previ-

During the era, Canada only financed so many athletes (about 100) to attend the Games, though additional athletes who qualified were welcome to pay their own way.

“I believe Bill Dale and Joe Addison both had the opportunity to pay their own way to the Olympics, but during the depression, the money wasn’t available,” Unwin said.

Months after the B.C. Cancer Agency opened a patient care wing atop its Lee Avenue building, the 10,000-square-foot space is alive with staff, patients and volunteers – working one-onone with clients and those behind the scenes, fundraising to optimize services already in place.

When Wilma Taylor of the Order of the Eastern Star stopped by the Alex and Jo Campbell Patient and Family Support Centre with her fellow Queen City Chapter members to make a donation on behalf of their organization, the person who led their tour of the supportive care facility was a volunteer lay navigator, a central component of the $10-million addition to the agency’s facility.

“I’m impressed,” Taylor said. “Everyone’s upbeat and positive; it’s much improved from when I was a kid.”

The facility, which - Lorne Mackie opened in March, includes a patient information library, a wellness room and a station for volunteers such as Mackie, who are trained to lead patients through everything they need to know outside of treatment.

“We guide them through that beginning stage – it’s a bumpy one,” Mackie said. “We discuss everything, finances, transportation, a list of questions to ask the doctor. Our role ends when they meet the oncologist.”

Though the donation from her Queen City chapter is relatively small, Taylor said, it makes a difference with chapters across B.C. and the Yukon contributing. The 146-year-old organization has donated to cancer treatment as far back as Taylor can remember, to a time when her grandfather received cobalt treatment at the outset of the technology.

“The treatment that they received at that time was very scary and now it’s more than hopeful.

I can see a huge change not only in the way the patient is informed, but the way it’s a family thing – when one person gets cancer, everyone wants to know and to help.”
