Armond will shine again Cranbrook interior designer buys the historic downtown theatre, wants to restore it as a multi-purpose centre S A L LY M AC D O N A L D Townsman Staff

Cranbrook’s historic Armond Theatre has a new owner, who plans to turn the neglected movie house into an art deco, Great Gatsby style function centre. Local interior designer Jean Trimble bought the old theatre in downtown Cranbrook in a court-ordered sale on Monday, July 22. She takes possession of the building on August 9, and hopes to start renovations

right away. “I’m so happy,” Trimble told the Townsman right after the court hearing. “It was tugging at my heartstrings and I could see the huge potential. “It’s like a beacon and it will shine again.” A court-ordered sale came about because the previous owner, Canadian Rocks Ltd, was not able to meet mortgage payments.

WHAT DO THE ENGLISHMEN DO WHILE WAITING FOR THE BIRTH OF THE ROYAL BABY? Actually, it’s the Bocce Lords, pictured in action at JulyFest this weekend past. Once a year Kimberley becomes the bocce capital of the world, and seems to transcend the space-time continuum in doing so. See more images of JulyFest inside and this week in these pages.

The Crown will ask for a sentence of at least 10 years for two Cranbrook men convicted of murder conspiracy and weapons offences. A sentence hearing for Lorne Carry, Colin Correia and Lonnie Adams began Monday in B.C. Supreme Court.

Summer free ride

Prosecutor Ann Katrine Saettler argued all three acted as part of a criminal organization, something that supports a longer jail term. She said Adams was at the top of the gang and was sent to Cranbrook in 2009 to supervise Correia and Adams.
