More funding for site cleanup

City hopes this funding is end of 10-plus year process C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

The Province of British Columbia is handing out another $1.5 million in funding to clean up contaminated land for redevelopment and Kimberley will be the recipient of $26,544. In Cranbrook, Tembec Inc. will be receiving up to $94,288 to help redevelop the site of their closed sawmill. The purpose is to assist communities in turning former industrial sites into usable property. The site in Kimberley is the old Cominco garage site across from Townsite Gro-

Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, got to know the folks of Cranbrook a little better at a meetand-greet event, Sunday, July 21, in Rotary Park.

Trudeau visits Cranbrook Barry Coulter

The leader of the Liberal Party of Canada made a stop in Cranbrook Sunday, July 21, turning Rotary Park into the local political event of the season. It was less about politics, however, than it was about a summer vacation for Justin Trudeau and his family, in a part of the world that in his

own words is very dear to him and his family. Trudeau got off a large RV Sunday afternoon to be greeted by Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski, Cranbrook’s youth ambassadors Makenzie Yates and Alicia Leasak and an enthusiastic crowd of more than 150 people. The event was billed as a meet and greet, and

Trudeau graciously waded into the crowd, signing autographs, getting his photo taken — meeting and greeting — before heading over to the bandstand for a quick speech. Trudeau was accompanied by his son Xavier, 6, and daughter Ella Grace, 4. His wife Sophie was feeling under the weather, Trudeau said, and

wouldn’t be joining this particular event. His kids were happy to have a stopover in a park. After the event, before heading off to Nelson, Trudeau told the Daily Townsman of the emotional connection he and his family have with the Kootenays.

cery, for which the City has been trying for over ten years to get a certificate from the Ministry of Environment to clear it for development. The City hopes to clear the land for residential development, including a low-cost housing project. The soil on the garage site has been replaced twice but the entire lot has still not been cleared by the MOE. “As I understand it, we can use portions of the site now — we have a certificate for part of the site,” said Mayor Ron McRae. “The $26,000 is to help us complete the remaining work so that we can seek certification for the remaining parts of the site. We are hopeful that this will be the end but there are no guarantees that in fact this may be the case.”

Man upset by condition of cemetery

Maintenance at Marysville Cemetery concerns resident C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

A Marysville man is upset with the state of the local cemetery. Mickey MacDonald, whose wife’s parents are interred at the Marysville Cemetery, says that he is appalled by the lack of maintenance.

“There are gopher holes all over the grass — gopher holes on some of the graves,” MacDonald said. “The grass is dying, there are weeds and small trees shooting up. “It just looks like it’s being completely ignored. “A lot of people buried in there are pioneers of Marysville. My father-in-law was a Councillor for the village of Marysville. It’s quite upsetting for my wife to see the cemetery in this condition. “Is this the way we treat our loved ones?”
