Mike Mero out on bail

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter

Two Quesnel men have been granted bail after being charged in connection to a shooting. Mike Mero, 28, was released on bail Monday, while Kale Raymond Comeau was released last month. Comeau and Mero are being charged with discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life and pointing a firearm and breaching in relation to a June 2 shooting incident in the 400 block of Hartley Street. The rounds did not strike anyone, but penetrated a window and siding of a residence. Sunday, June 3, members of the Quesnel RCMP executed a search warrant in connection to the shooting. Shortly after noon on that Sunday the warrant to search was executed on a Red Bluff Road property which resulted in the seizure of a quantity of cocaine, heroin and two prohibited weapons. Both men are back in Supreme court, Sept. 3 to fix a trial date.

Austin Smith pleads guilty

Crowds enjoy Musical Ride Tuesday evening saw a sizeable crowd fill the stands at the rodeo grounds in Alex Fraser Park to enjoy the RCMP Musical Ride. In addition to the precision riding demonstration, there was also the RCMP police dog demonstration and a wild pony race involving children trying their best to remain seated on the pony. The almost two-hour show kept the audience riveted in their seats.

Austin Smith, charged with fraud over $5,000, has pleaded guilty and has been sentenced. Smith, who pled guilty last month, received a 12-month conditional sentence and was or-

dered to pay restitution of $23,000. Smith was charged back in 2009 after an investigation into missing funds from the Quesnel Lacrosse Association. RCMP say charges were in connection with offences that occurred between January of 2008 and May of 2009.

Police add extra officers for BBD RCMP will be out in full force this BB Days weekend. “Increased police presence will be used to ensure that everyone enjoys the family oriented community event,” media spokesperson, Cst. Krista Vrolyk said. “Additional police resources will be targeting liquor related offences including open liquor in public, impaired driving and public intoxication. There will be zero tolerance for liquor related offences.” Police road checks will also be in place at various times throughout the weekend. “Drinking and driving is a senseless crime that claims innocent lives every year,” Vrolyk said. “Don’t take a chance – the stakes are too high. If you are planning on drinking during Billy Barker Days, be responsible. Plan ahead and ensure a sober ride home. Don’t drink and drive. Appoint a designated driver or call a taxi.”
