While antihomophobia policies have met with controversy in other B.C. school districts, New Westminster’s sexual orientation/ gender equity policy was approved Tuesday without a word of dissent. According to a report to the board of education, the policy was adopted to ensure inclusion of all students and employees in all aspects of school life regardless of sexual orientation. Along with defining ways to prevent discrimination and harassment, it is also intended to make sure complaints about homophobia are taken seriously and dealt with effectively and efficiently. The policy also has an educational component. “That goes to show it’s a good reflection on New Westminster and our schools and our community members that we are a community that values diversity, and that’s fantastic,” said board vice chair Jonina Campbell of the support for the policy. see ‘IT’S JuST’, A3
