The province has reserved the Greenwood Community Hall for a community meeting on June 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. to present information about their plans to decommission the dam at Providence/Marshall Lake. According to a memo to city council from Administrator Robin Dalziel, questions on the actual decommissioning will be welcomed after a short presentation. A Request for Proposals (RFP) for engineering services for the works had a deadline of May 21, 2013 for replies. “The ultimate goal of the Fisheries Program is to remove themselves of responsibility for ownership, operation and maintenance of the dam,” said the RFP. “The decommissioning of the dam will allow for a naturalized, safe, unobstructed, maintenance free movement of water from the lake which will allow MFLNRO to extinguish their water licence with the province. This requires that the existing dam be breached which will allow Marshall Lake to return to an unregulated water body status.” The RFP asks for proposals based on two options: Option A is a 46 metre-wide breach that would result in an outlet elevation at lake-edge matching the lake elevation at the completion of drawdown operations in 2012. Option B is a complete removal of the dam as requested by the adjacent landowners (approximate 100m wide breach). Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Public Affairs Officer Clarke Brennan said the ministry has dedicated funding to this project. Brennan told The Times the decommissioning is scheduled to take place in August and September 2013. “The decision to decommission the dam at Marshall Lake was made in the best interest of public safety,” said Brennan. “Without either decommissioning or a major and costly upgrade, the dam at Marshall Lake represents a significant risk to property
