A new eatery in New Westminster got its wish for support from city council to extend its hours even though council recently rejected a similar request from an establishment that’s been around for nearly 20 years. Brown’s Socialhouse, which opened last month in the Brewery District development on East Columbia Street, asked to extend its closing from midnight to 1 a.m. According to a city staff report, Brown’s is hoping the move will attract shift workers from Royal Columbian Hospital as well as other visitors. Council approved the request Monday with Coun. Betty McIntosh, who lives in the area, and Coun. Chuck Puchmayr opposed. McIntosh said the city should be moving cautiously since the establishment just opened for business. “I didn’t think they’d move this quickly on changing their hours,” said McIntosh.
