RCMP investigating sexual assault in Glenrosa area Jennifer Smith STAFF REPORTER

Kelowna RCMP have confirmed they are investigating a report of a sexual assault in the Glenrosa area of West Kelowna. The RCMP received a report of the assault on the weekend and are in the early stages of an investigation. “The investigation is ongoing…We’re basically confirming its legitimacy,” said Const. Kris Clark, Kelowna RCMP spokesperson. Over the weekend news reports surfaced stating a 17-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted on a heavily used trail adjacent to Glenrosa Middle School. Details of the assault came from residents in the West Kelowna neighbourhood who reported what had happened to the girl in the news, as per information they received from her relatives.

Kris Clark The alleged assault follows on the heels of an incident off the Mission Park Greenway last Monday where a 22-yearold woman was out for a walk in the evening when she was hit over the head, dragged into the bushes and sexually assaulted. Police issued a statement on Wednesday, June 5 warning the public to be careful on the Greenway and not use the trail and surrounding area alone. RCMP are not connecting the two cases and are not prepared to issue any details, as yet, on this

latest incident. Last week, the Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society suggested it may be time for regional leaders and law enforcement to at least consider ways of offering more security on the Mission Creek Greenway. The assault on the Greenway was markedly different from previous problems on the trail, and of a considerably more serious nature. But there have been other issues within the thoroughfare, which is a recreation hub and considered a commuter access point for cyclists. In May of 2011, a string of assaults committed by a man riding a bike, saw a suspect grab and grope women travelling with and without companions in broad daylight. That assailant was never caught. jsmith@kelownacapnews.com Twitter: @jaswrites

Kelowna RCMP issue a warning about new street drug Jennifer Smith STAFF REPORTER

The potent, addictive and toxic drug fentanyl is being sold on the streets of Kelowna, says the RCMP. The drug is a synthetic opiate considered up to 100 times stronger than morphine, and RCMP have learned it is being used to cut many street

drugs—speed (amphetamines), oxycodone and most commonly heroin. “Fentanyl, and several chemical variations, historically have been illicitly produced and sold on the street as heroin, a heroin alternative or synthetic heroin and (it) has been attributed to many overdose deaths. The drug is highly addictive and extremely toxic,” said Kris Clark, RCMP

spokesperson. When cheaper substances are used to artificially increase the weight and volume of a drug in order to increase dealer profits, it’s referred to as cutting a drug. The cutting process decreases the purity of the original, but can also introduce potentially more addictive, dangerous and toxic substances, according to a statement from RCMP

issued Friday. “What might be a ‘safe’ dose for a particular substance could lead to an overdose death on fentanyl,” the release notes. In reality, RCMP say there is no such thing as a safe dose of any drug, but fentanyl is explicitly dangerous. It is absorbed through contact with the skin and, due to its potency, can quick-

The risk to the public, including emergency personnel, is said to be significant and police are urging the public to call police about suspected drugs and not to handle any of these substances. jsmith@kelownacapnews.com Twitter: @jaswrites
