A country market retail facility at the Kettle River Museum bunkhouse is the vision of Kamloops resident Carl Driedger.

Midway council heard the proposal from Driedger to create the market retail facility at the bunkhouse and adjacent land at its regular meeting Monday night. That proposal details that the bunkhouse be renovated, a tower or other feature be erected atop the bunkhouse or the museum

Notable during these life members’ combined terms were resolutions by the district to work towards electrification of Westbridge and Christian Valley communities in 1956, removal of the tax on children’s school supplies in 1964, and the moratorium on uranium minning in B.C. in 1987.

Rock Creek WI presented Mary Cannon with a branch service pin for over 35 years in various roles as secretary, vicepresident, treasurer and president. Cannon’s outreach into other services to the community including cemetery upkeep and record keeping in conjunction with Margaret Eek, community recreation, and fall fair leadership was recognized.

Members from Grand Forks to Bridesville were congratulated for their contributions to strengthening their communities through involvement.

A new district board was elected: president Norma Tilgner, secretary Delores McNee, treasurer Sue Mash, and directors Linda Dixon, Ruth Champagne, Hazel Self and Pat Campbell.

Heartfelt thanks to the talented ladies of the Main River WI in Westbridge who served up a wonderful variety of fresh salads for lunch. Lively musical entertainment/ sing a long was provided by the Vanhaesebrouck family.

The day ended with invitations from the Homemakers of Gifford, Washington to join them on their “Day of Sharing”, while Sue Mash (Rock Creek WI’s president) extended an invitation to everyone to next year’s spring conference in Rock Creek and Helen Overness invited Kettle River District to celebrate South Okanagan WI.s 90th birthday at a picnic in Oliver in August.

Scam Alert!

This is another reminder to be aware of creative fraudsters. Recently a client came to us with an email they received from “Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)”.

The email claimed they were entitled to a refund from the filing of their personal income tax return. The email stated they could obtain the refund through direct deposit by clicking on an attached link and entering their bank account information.

The link brought them to a site that looked in every way like the actual CRA website.

It was very convincing. Luckily, in this case the client was suspicious, and came to us for clarification. This email was a scam.

Best wishes Congratulations to the families and graduates of the class of 2013.

The world that awaits you is filled with both promise and challenge.

The job market isn’t what it was thirty years ago when a young person could walk in off of the street and land a high paying job that would last for 35 years with no more knowledge than how to pack a lunch kit.

It’s won’t be easy to carve a place for yourselves in this world that the older generation is handing to you.

It’s not quite as pristine as when your parents inherited it. There are considerations that get swept under the rug in the interest of political or economic expediency. Sorry about that. Our apologies.

It would be wonderful if this new generation could figure that out for us – because we sure haven’t done well at it.

Try to remember that the promises given so freely to us by television commercials often prove to be illusion – telling you that happiness can be purchased.

The important thing to remember is that you are responsible for your own happiness.

Set goals and, above all, be true to yourself. Here are a few simple rules that may help guide you: Free your heart from hatred.

Free your mind from worry.

Live simply.

Give more.

Expect less.

And when you are doing that giving part, it doesn’t have to be huge to be important. Small or large, all good works contribute to the wealth and well-being of your community.

Congratulations also to the parents and families of the grads. The fruits of your labours will cross the podium on Saturday – may it be a blessed and happy day for all.

Once again to the grads – many best wishes for a long and happy life!

Pathfinders earn honour

The Canada Cord is the highest honour that can be earned in the Pathfinder program through Girl Guides of Canada and last Saturday saw a presentation ceremony at gallery 2 in Grand Forks to honour 14 Kootenay Area teens – including two Pathfinders from the Boundary Guiding Unit and one from Grand Forks.

missioner, was on hand to make the presentations.

Each teen received the bright red Canada Cord, representing hours upon hours of community service, badge work and leadership.

To receive the Canada Cord, a Pathfinder must complete 20 badges in nine different subject areas, lead three camps or events, and complete a service com-

ponent with community service carried out locally, internationally and for the environment.

Pathfinders are between the ages of 12 and 14. Participation provides the teens the opportunity to make a difference, as individuals and as members of a team, in their community and their world.

Students prepare for grad In conversation with members of the Class of 2013

Introducing

Dalton Pattie

Dalton Pattie is ready to go to work right after graduation from BCSS. In fact, he plans to be on a plane heading north within a week of the end of school. “I am pretty hard working and smart as far as that goes,” he says with confidence.

Dalton had enough credits that he only needed to attend one semester in Grade 12.

So he took the first semester off and moved to Kelowna to get a taste of life away from home.

“I came back to finish school because I really want to become a welder and I needed Grade 11 math to do that,” he explained. “I really want to get my own welding truck together because that’s money for me when I am working and money for my truck when it’s working.

“I am definitely going up north to get a job. That’s $26 an hour to start. That’s good money.”

He plans to work up there for a year or so. “Make enough money to leave and to know that I have a secure place all of the time I am in school. It just makes sense.”

He sees some value in starting at the bottom as a helper too.

“I would like to get out there and do a little binge as a hand because that just gets you formally introduced with the work.

What’s going on and what’s happening.”

In five or 10 years Dalton sees himself working up north with his own welding rig. With that semester off he’s seen some of the real world that many of his classmates have yet to experience. Dalton displays a confidence that makes one believe he’ll be doing fine out there in the world.

Justin Patterson

“The first time I took a lawn mower apart I was nine years old,” says BCSS grad Justin Patterson.

As a bonus for all concerned, when he put it back together it worked too!

According to his exit interview file he surprised many when he began fixing the bicycles and lawn mowers he was given to tinker with.

Pretty soon the neighbourhood kids started to bring their bikes to him when they needed to be repaired.

Justin came to the Boundary from Nanaimo three years ago. He says he liked the change. “It is way easier at this school, and I have way more friends.”

He’s already got a job lined up after graduation working in the logging industry up near Beaverdell.

Over the next couple of years Justin would like to pursue post secondary education in mechanics. He plans to go to Okanagan College for Heavy Duty Mechanics.

But for this year, since he has a job already lined up, he’ll work for now.

For hobbies Justin lists mechanics, skateboarding, dogs and cats, swimming, skiing and snowboarding. “Skateboarding every day, an hour a day at least,” he insists.

He says that graduating is awesome. “It feels like I have grown up.”

In five years he sees himself working up north on the rigs for big cash – in heavy-duty mechanics or pipefitting.

He sounds like a handy kind of guy to have around when something needs fixed, that’s for sure!

Castaways audience choice

West Boundary Elementary School students wowed the audience with the production of an amazing musical play last week. The Castaways played on Tuesday and Thursday nights with Thursday being preceded by an outdoor barbeque.

There were 10 actors on the main stage with another half dozen students playing the part of a modern day cast appearing in the spotlights in front of the choir numbering another 43 students.

The modern day cast learned of the challenges of living on the streets. The castaways brought the story to life of a group of homeless youth in Vancouver during the Depression years.

Through following the play, the modern day cast was able to help one of their peers to understand how lucky they are to have a home and family.

Kudos to Mrs. Biro for another outstanding success as director of an elementary school production.

I originally estimated there must have been about 300 births in Phoenix between 1899 and 1921, when the community became a ghost town, but I was way off. By scanning birth announcements in the Phoenix Pioneer, examining death registrations and census data, and relentless Googling, I now have a list of 472 Phoenicians — 217 boys, 249 girls, and six of unknown gender.

Doubtless some are still missing, so the actual total is probably over 500.

Unfortunately, it will be some time before we get a handle on the actual numbers. Due to an arbitrary and in my view silly change enacted in 2003, birth registrations are no longer public until 120 years after the fact, whereas it was previously 100 years.

So while we know Phoenix had 59 births

Cattle drive a tradition Riders drove a herd of cattle from the Harpur Ranch to their summer range last Saturday morning. The Harpurs have been doing this drive each spring since 1934. They start the drive right after a hearty breakfast of steak and eggs at the ranch.

The cattle drive went through Rock Creek just a little after 6. “The weather was on the cool side and that actually helps them move a little faster,” said Judy Harpur.

Tumeric has benefits you’ve probably never heard of Turmeric has benefits you have probably never heard of.

Turmeric is an herbaceous plant very similar to ginger. The ground rhizome provides a gold-coloured spice commonly used for flavouring and colouring food. It is what gives commercial mustard its colour. It is also used in butters and cheeses and is the main spice in curry.

While many people use it in some form even if only in the mustard in their hot dog, it is not thought of as a health food. In fact, it can be a very big factor in health. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is reported by the American Cancer Society to be a powerful antioxidant. Science is coming to learn more of its significant health properties.

Turmeric Uses Turmeric has benefits beyond its common culinary uses; it also had many medicinal uses. It has been used in traditional medicine to treat skin problems, bruises, joint pain and inflammation, sprains and strains all of which may involve some degree of inflammation. Using turmeric also benefits cases of ulcers, parasitic infections, cold and flu symptoms and liver ailments.

Scientific research shows that turmeric aids in breaking down liver toxins, improving gallbladder function, it aids in fat metabolism and reduces blood clotting. In general, it is a good general digestive aid and anti-inflammatory agent.

Recent studies have even shown that turmeric may help prevent breast, colon, lung, prostate and other forms of cancer.

Some other conditions that turmeric may be helpful with include Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, bronchitis, cancer, colds, depression, diarrhea, fever, fibromyalgia, headaches, heartburn, intestinal, gas, kidney problems,

liver problems, loss of appetite, stomach bloating, stomach pain and water rentention.

Turmeric Benefits – Pain Relief The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine published a study in 2009 which compared curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, with ibuprofen in terms of their ability to relieve pain. A group of 107 people with knee osteoarthritis were treated with curcumin or ibuprofen and improvement in function was found to be about equal for either.

In another study (2008), researchers at Baylor University Medical Center reported that taking moderate doses of curcumin daily for up to three months was safe. If you suffer from chronic pain, you may find, after using it regularly for a while, that your pain is reduced.

Turmeric and Alzheimer’s Villagers in India are big consumers of curries with turmeric and have the world’s lowest rate of Alzheimer’s disease. There definitely is a relationship. In a study at the University of California at Los Angeles, rats were fed curcumin. These rats were prone to accumulate beta-amyloid plaque in their brains – the abnormality associated with Alzheimer’s disease in humans. The curcumin blocked the plaque’s accumulation and also reduced the inflammation related to Alzheimer’s disease. The rats also did better on memory tests than the rats fed normal diets.

Turmeric Benefits – Reducing Inflammation Turmeric is very beneficial to reduce inflammation in the digestive tract, and to help the liver. Curcumin has been found to lower the levels of two enzymes that cause inflammation.

Since inflammation has been linked to so many conditions, curcumin has great potential to reduce pain, im-

prove long-term health and, ultimately, increase lifespan.

Turmeric and Lifespan People in the island nation of Okinawa have the longest average life span at 81.2 years. It seems that the Okinawans drink large amounts of turmeric tea (see recipe below) either brewed fresh or available in local stores.

Turmeric Benefits – How to Use It If you would like to try it, here is how to make turmeric tea. Surprisingly, considering it is a spice it tastes not bad.

1. Bring water to a boil 2. Add ground turmeric - ¼ teaspoon per cup of water 3. Simmer for 10 minutes 4. Strain through a fine sieve.

5. Add honey and/or lemon to taste.

Experiment with the ingredients and flavourings until you find a combination that suits your taste. You could try freshly grated turmeric or combine it with ginger or other flavours.

You can also add 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric to many dishes such as soups, stir fries, casseroles or mix it into pasta or other sauces or salad dressings.

Try using it in different ways and increase your turmeric intake over time to 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per day. You could also add some cayenne pepper as well. Cayenne can be effective to help boost circulation. A couple of cautions: turmeric can stain, so be careful when using it. Also, turmeric should not be used with Coumadin (warfarin).

Elections BC releases final count The BC Liberal Party will form a majority government with 49 members elected, the BC NDP took 34 seats, the Green Party of BC elected one member and Independent Vicki Huntington won in Delta South.

The final voting results in Coquitlam-Maillardville are subject to a judicial recount.

Former Oliver Mayor and Councillor Linda Larson won a seat as MLA of the Boundary Similkameen riding with 8,499 votes (46.59 per cent). Coming second was NDP candidate Sam Hancheroff with 7,113 (38.99 per cent), followed by Green candidate John Kwasnica with 1,602 (8.78 per cent) and independent candidates Mischa Popoff with 655 votes (3.59 per cent) and Doug Pederson 375 (2.06 per cent).

Peter Beckett, the district electoral officer with Elections BC, said that there were over 1,000 absentee voting ballots from the Boundary-Similkameen riding.

“If it’s not (a resident’s) assigned voting place, then we say that is voting absentee.

This time we had 1,340 ballots that we had to count over the past two days and it didn’t change the results of the election in Boundary-Similkameen,” he said.

A total of 18,244 ballots were cast in the riding.

In a first for the province the Green Party has elected an MLA to office in Victoria.

Andrew Weaver was elected in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, defeating incumbent Liberal and government minister Ida Chong as well as NDP candidate Jessica van der Veen.

Elections BC recorded 1,803,051 total valid province-wide votes for the May 14 election.

Beauty lights up community hall

The annual art show put on in the art club room under the Greenwood Community Hall is always a special treat – an opportunity to look at beauty born in the Boundary. The photographs of this year’s art show will testify to that far better than mere words might.

According to Kettle River Art Club President Nancy Yamamura, the organization has been going since 1976. They held their annual art show last week on May 27 and 28. Admission was by donation and as is their custom, all exhibitors were welcome.

Each spring for more than 25 years the Kettle River Art Club has put on its show.

As well as displaying the work of the many members of the club – some of which was available for purchase – they also had a special display of Doukhobor arts, crafts and history. He said he didn’t know the shot went in because of the way #2 (a par 3 at 143 yards) is laid out.

“The guys I was golfing with had a pretty good idea because it hit straight at the flag, but because the flag stick was right at the back of the green you couldn’t actually see it roll into the hole. But Ed figured it was rolling towards the hole.

“When we got up there it JOHN HALLSTROM wasn’t on the green so I just assumed it went over. But Ed walked up there and said nope, there it is.

“It’s just a rare, rare thing that doesn’t happen to many golfers – I was lucky that it happened to me.”

The Kettle Valley Golf Course has treated the Hallstrom family well. Two years ago John’s nephew Devin Hallstrom hit an albatross, which is three under par. He did it on hole #5 – the longest hole on the course.
