Coquitlam wants the province’s help to get New Westminster to build a two-lane bridge to replace the current one-lane Braid Street Bailey bridge connecting the two cities. On Monday, Coquitlam council decided to apply to the provincial government to begin a dispute resolution process involving mediation and possibly arbitration to get a basic twolane bridge bridge replacement that Coquitlam estimates would cost $1.7 million. In February, the bridge was closed after engineers discovered structural stresses that needed to be repaired. When they were completed, the allowable weight limit was reduced to 15 tonnes, which eliminated heavy truck traffic. Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart said Monday that city has been trying to find a solution with New Westminster because goods movement is being tied up and gridlock is spilling over to residential roads in both cities. see NEW WEST, A3
