Local quilters Judy Harpur and Miriam March recently won major ribbons at the Canadian Quilting Conference, “Quilt BC”, held in Penticton on May 16-18. The Canada Quilter’s Association (CQA) sponsored the show. “You have to jury your quilts in, which means they have to go before a panel, and not everybody that submits a quilt gets in,“ explained March. “Between Judy and I we had three quilts accepted. Just being accepted is amazing.” Two of their quilts won major prizes. March took first place in the Bed or Wall Quilt Longarm/Midarm Quilted Quilt with her entry called Lattice Garden. Last October this quilt took top honours in the rookie category at a show in Portland. Harpur brought home a judge’s choice ribbon in the Original Design Abstract Pictorial Category with Picasso’s ‘39 Ford, which is comprised of rust dyed, tea dyed, discharged, hand dyed, batik and commercial prints. “So we both have ribbons and we’re both in the same guild – it’s just kind of cool that out of the 100 they accepted, three came from Rock Creek and two won ribbons,” said March, who started a long-arm quilting home-based business 18 months ago known as Whispering Pines Quilt Studio. “We have got a very strong quilting community so it is just sort of encouragement for everybody.” This was Harpur’s second showing at the CQA annual show. “Last year I sent a quilt to

We have done placemats for Parkview Manor, dolls for the women’s shelter in Grand Forks, military quilts for

Ranch hosts field day Ever wonder what an adjuvant is? It’s all part of the mix. According to the Washington, DC based trade organization Council of Producers & Distributors of Agrotechnology, an adjuvant is “a material added to a tank mix to improve pesticide spreading, wetting, canopy and leaf penetration, and adhesion. Adjuvants have the potential to decrease the number of pesticide applications needed, reduce pesticide drift, eliminate foaming problems in spray tank mixtures, provide acidification to reduce alkaline hydrolysis and reduce unintended exposures and potentially adverse environmental effects.” Local residents will have an opportunity to learn this and much more about soils, fertility, weed identification and control for range pasture and crops during a Rancher’s Field Day that is planned for Friday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Midway city council voted to promote the Kootenay Energy Diet program at its May 21 meeting. A presentation by FortisBC representative Nicole Bogdanovic informed council of the success of the pilot program in Rossland and the involvement of other Kootenay-Boundary communities. The program includes substantial savings and grants for homeowners wishing to make their homes more energy efficient. *** The Midway Citizens on Patrol asked for and received council’s support for petitioning the Ministry of Highways to change the dotted, passing lane line within the village’s boundary to a double yellow solid line in order to discourage vehicles from going over the posted 70 km an hour speed limit. *** In her administrator’s report, Penny Feist announced that the Midway Fire Department intended to purchase from the Grand Forks fire department $50,000 worth of surplus equipment for $3,000 along with a promise from Midway

It included using the facility as a country market. Once again, the museum will employ two students during the summer tourist season. The museum is now accepting applications for those positions. The next council meeting is June 19.

It wasn’t Gail McLean’s fault that notice of the fair workbee didn’t get ink in last week’s paper. As secretary of the fair association she had sent a request in that we list a workbee in our community events section of the paper. Unfortunately we misplaced the note here at the paper. But 28 people did show up for three and a half hours on Sunday afternoon and a lot of work did get accomplished. Two new pole lights went up, repairs were

Meanwhile at the pavilion, the kitchen was given a good cleaning and all the plates were counted and organized. They even had time to repair the steps at the back door there too. “We are plugging away,” said McLean. “As soon as we can get paint we are planning another work bee.”

Phoenix Cattle truly a family farm

There is a ranch just west of the Canyonview Bridge that may be redefining agri-tourism with their side hill field of pigs next to the highway. Travellers get a great view of piglets racing across the hillside. “You don’t see pigs outside nowadays,” Brandon “Pete” Blaine explained. “You will never see baby pigs outside. They are always in a controlled environment and not out in Mother Nature.” Pete and Shauna Blaine run Phoenix Cattle Company from their 36-hectare (88-acre) homestead. They moved onto the property in 2009 with 40 head of cattle. Since then they’ve brought 36 ewes and 15 sows into production. Those sows produce up to 250 babies a year to bring income to the family farm and amusement to those passing by on the highway. “I keep saying we’d be rich if we could just put a drop box by the highway for all the people who stop to watch the pigs,” said Shauna.

Out of necessity they use a lot more land these days than the 36 hectares. “We’ve recently bought another cow herd so we’ve got 130,” said Pete. So they rent pasture, mostly private, from other landowners to range the cattle. They also lease 150 acres of irrigated hay land down in Kettle Valley and another 140 acres by the Kettle River Provincial Park that they are putting into grain. They put in a large greenhouse beside the house a few years ago. Work done in the greenhouse during calving and lambing season helps bring in some cash flow later in the year. “It’s just another thing to add to the farm that makes a little bit of money,” says Shauna. “We try to produce our own feed.”. This is exactly what they are doing with the grain crop too. “We are doing it for our own use,” explains Pete. “Because it takes a lot of grain to feed those pigs for a year.” Any surplus that they can sell will be a little bit more of that little bit more Shauna was talking about. You could say Nevada Dynneson has barrel racing in her blood. The 13 year-old Rock Creek resident is a fourth generation cowgirl. Her mother Deona Dynneson competes as a professional barrel racer, her father was a bull rider and both her grandparents were with the rodeo. “I like the speed,” said Nevada of why she likes to barrel race. “And meeting new friends from everywhere.” Nevada has been riding since she was four and began com-

peting by the time she was five. It is her competitive drive, passion for horses and her dedication to the sport that earned her a spot on the BC Provincial National Junior High Rodeo Team. As a member of the team, Nevada will be competing in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) in Gallup, New Mexico, June 23-29. The NJHFR includes more than 1,000 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. Contestants compete for a chance to be named the national Junior High Finals Rodeo National Champion, for more than $75,000 in prizes and more than $100,000 in college scholarships. To earn the title of national champion, contestants must place in the top 20 based on their combined times and scores. Nevada qualified for the position on the BC team during the BC Junior High Rodeo Finals in Hudson’s Hope, BC earlier this month. The win was a difficult one. When they arrived for the competition Nevada’s nine-year old quarter horse, Savannah, had become dehydrated and couldn’t race in the first round. Nevada borrowed her mom’s quarter horse, Leroy, which they’d brought along for back up. But Nevada hadn’t ridden her mom’s horse in over a year and she was bit apprehensive going into that first race. “She jumped on and placed sixth anyway, “said Deona. “She really had to trust him and he had to really trust her.” By the second round Nevada’s horse was ready to run and she pulled up to qualify for the provincial team. “It was quite dramatic and not a sure thing,” recalls Deona. “It just added to the excitement when her horse wasn’t ready.” When asked what she does to prepare for the competitions, Nevada says simply she does what she loves. She rides her horse everyday. She keeps her healthy and sound, treating her like the athlete she is. “I think it all starts with being in love with horses,” said Deona. “The horses themselves love their job – when they get to the rodeo or race they know what they are there to do.” “I just like to see how she progresses each time and what she learns and how she handles her horse,” said Deona of what she enjoys about her daughter’s sport. Nevada is being sponsored by Willow Spring Black Angus in Westbridge, BC. The NJHFR will be broadcast online at NHSRATV.com. Nevada will also be attending the Canadian finals in Nanton, AB, on July 25-27.

Prescription for poverty The Canadian Medical Association has an online dialogue about how issues such as poverty, lack of access to healthy foods and adequate housing affect health. According to the CMA, social and economic factors determine 50 per cent of health outcomes. Dr. Gary Bloch at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital is one of a growing number of Canadian physicians who see poverty as a disease. He maintains that treating people at low income with a higher income will have at least as big an impact on their health as any other drugs that he could prescribe them. To that end, along with the standard questions about past medical history, Dr. Bloch also screens for income level. In his practice, prescribing income could mean assessing whether a patient’s illnesses might qualify for provincial or federal disability supports and employment insurance. He helps fill in applications and connects patients with programs such as basic financial planning. Increasingly, physician groups are recognizing poverty as a disease, not simply from lifestyle factors such as smoking, but also from the toll the stress of being poor can take on the body. According to a technical report released last year by the American Academy of Pediatrics, for children in particular, the strong and frequent bombardment of “toxic stress” from living in substandard housing with adults who are also stressed can set the stage for lifelong damage. A nutritious diet and access to opportunities for recreation could do more for health care than building more hospitals. With a bad economy and a budget that needs balancing – it could be difficult getting the newly elected BC Liberal government to act. It is a priority for us in the Boundary though because this riding has one of the lowest average incomes in the province.
