Chinatown pitched for Richmond But veteran councillor wonders how proponents would unify diverse collection of malls by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter A tourist-drawing icon found in major North American cities could calm a local debate over Chinese-language-only signs, a longtime Richmond resident told city council Monday. Erika Simm, a 45-year resident, sought political support to designate an area of Richmond as a Chinatown, complete with an ornate gate to mark its entrance in City Centre. “Richmond has a Chinatown in the making, however, it has no character whatsoever… It is generic, bland and modern,” said Simm. “If you call it what it is, and if you embellish it, then who cares if there are Chinese-only signs?” A Chinatown in Richmond would become a hub for tourists and include major Asian malls on No. 3 Road and the city’s restaurant row of Alex-

andra Road, Simm suggested. Banners and wall murals could tie the streets together, she added. “This is an opportunity for our Chinese community to reach out and invite us to participate. It’s good for business and it’s good for building relationships.” Eight Chinatowns in Canada, including Vancouver and Victoria, are being recognized this month in a Canada Post stamp series entitled Chinatown Gates. But on Monday civic politicians were cool to the idea of adding Richmond to the list. They noted a group of business owners pitched a similar plan several years ago, but it never got off the ground. They also noted Tourism Richmond’s aim to market a cluster of over 400 Asian businesses as the Golden Village, but that concept “kind of faded out,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. Cash needed to establish a Chinatown could come from developers, government grants, the city and—with a promise of boosting tourism—even local businesses, suggested Simm. Councillors didn’t make any commitments Monday, but did encourage Simm to pursue it. See Page 4

Let’s name a lane for Jimmy Ng by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter With the annual Jimmy Ng Ball Hockey coming to an end this year, local politicians are mulling over something more permanent to honour the memory of the fallen Mountie. Richmond East MLA Linda Reid said she’s gotten to know Ng’s parents over the years, joining them at the probation hearings for the man convicted in Ng’s death. Reid would like to see a local road dedicated to his memory; perhaps Jimmy Ng Lane.
