Ardel Weins The Secret of Life is to Enjoy the Passage of Time, and what better enjoyment for young and old than to have a hobby. It has been six years since my husband Bill and I have owned Vernon Hobby Centre on Kalamalka Lake Road. Regretfully Bill passed away in October 2012. Bill was a long time Remote Control Builder/Flyer and Railroader and very knowledgeable in his crafts. He loved his hobbies and for over thirty years he and I enjoyed many Flying Events and Railroad shows. His legacy lives on. Along with excellent staff, we continue to serve Vernon Hobbyists by stocking reputable brand products which include large selection of model and railway paints, N & HO scale model locomotives and rolling stock. Available also are landscaping materials, a full line of model glues, balsa and basswood and K&S metals. New stock arrives weekly such as Electric Radio control Airplanes, Cars, Boats, including parts and accessories. There is also a healthy variety of plastic models, kites, rockets and puzzles. For clock enthusiasts, a number of different clock faces and parts are available. Come visit Vernon Hobby Centre which offers many “Toys for Big Boys and Little Boys Dreams”

A Passion For

Photography

Cara brady Morning Star Staff

She treasures family pictures going back to the 1800s, has a collection of 200 cameras, has hung out of an airplane to get the perfect photo, owns a thriving photography business and has a wall full of awards. Brenda Hala admits that she has a passion for photography. “I can remember my mother, grandmother and aunt always having cameras and taking photos at family events. I started taking pictures when I was 14 and got a 110 Kodak Instamatic camera. I still have it,” she said. “I loved thinking that I was taking pictures that someone would be able to enjoy and have pleasant memories about in years to come. I got my first 35 mm camera when I was 19 but I wasn’t thinking of photography as a career.” She has her sister to thank for suggesting she apply for a job at the place where she took her film to be developed. There was no opening the first time she asked but the next time she took film in, she was offered a job and found herself manager of a studio in Regina at age 19. It wasn’t long before she was managing four stores. “I was also taking photos, baby pictures, weddings, families, and enjoying meeting all the people. I always talk with people before a shoot so I know them and how to help them tell their stories and make their vision happen. At that time, photography was still very much a

man’s world and it was wonderful to have people have the confidence that I as a young woman could do this,” said Hala. By the time she was in her 20s, she had moved to Vancouver and was managing 443 stores of a franchise around the province. “I traveled a lot to the stores and did some photography but I missed doing more. I know how much photos can mean. I lost a sister and the photos I took of her help her daughters, who were young at the time, to remember her better.” After seeing most of B.C., Hala decided to move to Vernon in 1989 so she could do more photography. She bought a store franchise in 1991 and has operated as an independent business, Brenda Hala Photography, since 1996. “It was scary to be on my own and wonder if I could survive but I found out quickly that I could. I liked having a storefront and the friendliness of the people.” Hala is a member of the Professional Photographers of Canada, provincially and nationally, and has her Master of Photographic Arts from the organization, as well as awards in numerous categories, including scenic, wildlife and animal portraiture. She specializes in family and pet portraits and business photography.
