Rodney Gerald Arthur Gutknecht

Please join Rodney’s friends and family in sharing memories and happy times spent with him.

Muriel Eriksen (Eby) Muriel was born in Prince Rupert on June 29, 1920, one of eight children born to Henrietta and Christian Eby. She outlived her five brothers, Floyd (Buck), Earl, Donald, Robert and John (Brick) Eby, and two sisters Winifred Stewart and Marjorie Whyte. Muriel was also predeceased by her husband of 50 years Martin Eriksen on May 7, 1991. She is survived by her three children, Lynne Urquhart, Robert Eriksen (Glenda) and Elaine Oborne (Lorne). Grandma shall be sadly missed by her grandchildren Maureen Halasz (Kornel), Richard Smith (Jennifer), Kalle Oborne, Erika Oborne-Barton (Kevin), Dane, Kevin and Chad Eriksen as well as great-grandchildren Justin and Derek Ounsted, Kennedy and Shelby Smith and Rudy Koen Barton. Muriel was a wonderful partner to Martin. They both shared a love of travel that they passed on to their children and grandchildren. She was feisty and strong willed until the end and lived her life “her way”. Muriel passed away April 27, 2013 during an afternoon nap, after having lunch with family. She shall be missed by all that knew her. Her family would like to thank the third floor staff for their care in her last week of life and a special thank you to everyone else for their kindness and concern. There shall be no formal service, as this was her request. Her ashes shall be spread in the ocean as this was also her wish.

Rodney Gerald Arthur Gutknecht passed peacefully in his sleep on May 12, 2013 at the Vancouver General Hospital when he succumbed to brain cancer. Rodney’s passing was sudden and with dignity, but with his two sons, Mark and Benjamin, by his side, he did not leave this world alone. Throughout his fight he kept his good sense of humour and used laughter as his medicine of choice. Rodney will be sadly missed by his loving family, including his sister Sheryl, his two brothers Randy and Russell, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. A celebration of life will be held at the Rod and Gun Club on Saturday, May 25 from 2 to 6pm.
