Arnold Clifton said that is simply not acceptable. “Despite an ongoing review process, Enbridge has entered our territory and begun project work before their proposed oil tanker and pipeline project has even been approved,” said Clifton.

“This is disrespectful to the Gitga’at First Nation, the review process, and the people of British Columbia, who oppose oil tankers in our coastal waters.”

Councillor Marven Robinson, one of those at the meeting, said the company was politely told to take their boat and leave regardless of what work was being undertaken but they did say Enbridge could stay the night if the weather was unsafe to travel.

However, Northern Gateway communications manager Ivan

Giesbrecht said the company was not kicked out and “respectfully left the area” after a meeting with the Band and the conclusion of their work. “This was a surprise.

We had to contact the members who were on the site and they were very surprised by the way the visit was characterized,” he said.

“We let them know when we arrived on Tuesday, we identified ourselves and let them know which was our boat and to ask if they had any questions... At their request we met with them for half an hour and it was, according to those in Hartley Bay, a very cordial meeting.”

Another point of contention for the Gitga’at was that the fax announcing their arrival was accompanied with a letter ad-

dressed to Gitxaala Chief Councillor Conrad Lewis. The letter was summarily sent back to Enbridge.

“It’s hard to imagine a company screwing-up its relationships with First Nations more than Enbridge has,” said Robinson, who called the whole ordeal “very disrespectful”.

“This incident shows not only the failure of Enbridge to meaningfully consult, but also indicates an insensitive, scattershot approach to dealing with First Nations,” he said.

We remain resolved to protect our territory and people from this project.”

Giesbrecht acknowledges that the company did send a letter addressed to Chief Lewis, but said it was an honest mistake.

Enbridge tour shows the work underway since Michigan oil spill

KITIMAT - An Enbridge-sponsored tour of the Kalamazoo River area and Marshall, Michigan region have local community stakeholders impressed with the company’s openness.

On an invite from the company, about a dozen people from communities from Prince George to Kitimat toured the site and region of a 2010 major oil spill, when an Enbridge line failed, spilling about 877,000 gallons into Talmadge Creek, which feeds into the Kalamazoo.

“We’ve had a lot of questions about what happened in Marshall three years ago and we’ve been trying to answer the questions but we felt that if we were able to take them out to Marshall so they could see for themselves, perhaps some of their questions could be answered with a tour of the clean-up,” explained Michele Perret, Northern Gateway’s Community and Municipal Relations Manager.

The tour, which she led, included travel by bus through the area, and on boats on the water itself.

It wasn’t only company representatives either. Marshall’s city manager, and a representative from the Calhoun County Conservation District also answered questions, and nearby residents

were also included in the factfinding mission.

“There were a lot of questions. I think that was really positive, that people weren’t shy to ask questions,” said Perret. “They asked questions about everything.”

She said the answers showed that the clean-up has been successful. The woman from the Conservation District even told the visitors that health effects from the spill have been nil.

“She said ‘I’ve had more health issues with a bridal party and a bad cake.’” said Perret.

The representative from Kitimat, fishing guide and Kitimat Chamber of Commerce director Tracey Hittel, said that the tour was very informative.

“I tried to get as much input from the public as possible on the whole situation,” he said. “They seem to be quite happy with what Enbridge has done with the cleanup.”

From what he gathered from Marshall city officials, they learned a lot about emergency response and about suddenly housing and feeding thousands of people at once, people who came as a result of the spill.

The company itself was not well-known to people in the area before the spill. Some may not have even quite realized an oil pipeline was going through the area, he said.

“The townspeople said they didn’t even know who Enbridge was, and that pipeline’s been in the ground there since ‘67,” he said “It was in the ground for so many years just flowing oil underneath their town and not knowing until unfortunately the line let go.”

But the clean-up effort has paid off and he said people on his tour saw little more than ‘pepper flakes’ of oil in the water.

“From what we saw, you would never know there was a spill there,” he said. “It was quite amazing you could clean up the oil from what the pictures looked like originally and what they’ve done now.”

Hittel said that the portrayal of the spill on television media seemed skewed from what actually happened.

“What the media put out was nowhere near what really happened,” he said.

But all of this is not meant to express that Hittel himself supports the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat.

For example he said the Kitimat River just wouldn’t handle an oil spill.

“If we had an oil spill on the Kitimat River, it would be disastrous...We just couldn’t have one.”

The Kalamazoo River for instance is not as heavily relied on for fishing, drinking water does not come from it and it’s small.

TERRACE - Conservation Officers are warning people not to stop or get out of their vehicles when spotting wild animals they spot along side of the road.

The warning follows reports of vehicles stopping to observe a kermode bear last week on Hwy16 east of Terrace.

“People are obviously getting way too close, not giving the animal an avenue of escape and conditioning the animal to human presence as well as creating the potential for a motor vehicle accident or collision,” reports Terracebased conservation officer Gareth Scrivner.

“This kind of behaviour obviously puts people’s safety at risk as well as increasing the likelihood that the animal will lose some of its wild natural behaviour, especially if people are foolish enough to feed it,” he said.

“We are interested in receiving information of irresponsible behaviour along with a licence plate to the RAPP 1-877-952-7277,” Scrivner added.

McBride the top BG president talks LNG developments spot for accidents

PRINCE RUPERT - Numbers released by ICBC on Tuesday show that by far the highest number of vehicle collisions in Prince Rupert occur on McBride.

By far the highest number of accidents occur at the entrance to the downtown core at the intersection of Third Ave. West and Third Ave East. In the last five years there have been 25 accidents at that location. Of those 25, eight have resulted in casualties being reported.

There was a tie in the second highest number of incidents, with 15 collisions at the intersection of 5th and McBride and 8th and McBride. Rounding out the top

five were 11 accidents at the corner of 9th and McBride and 10 at 2nd Ave. and McBride.

Off of McBride, the most accidents occur in the downtown core. There were seven accidents at 1st Street and 2nd Avenue West and seven at the intersection of Third Ave. While the intersection at 3rd Ave. And McBride had the highest number of accidents in 2009, 2010 and 2011, that trend ended in 2012. The intersection at 9th Ave. and McBride, where parents turn to drop off their children at the new Prince Rupert Middle School and other turn to go golfing, had five accidents compared to four at the entrance to downtown.

There are currently six LNG export terminals proposed in the region — three in Kitimat and three in Prince Rupert including the BG terminal on Ridley Island, the Pacific Northwest LNG terminal on Lelu Island and a possible terminal on Grassy Point — but on May 15 Swaffield told the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce seeing six built is unlikely.

“There have been many projects announced and

there may be some consolidation taking place...

Ultimately, I believe two to three projects will go ahead, though I don’t know which those will be,” he said, noting his company is looking for partners in the project.

“The main question I am asked, particularly in Prince Rupert, is, is this real... I believe it is very real.”

The BG Group is currently in the environmental assessment with baseline work underway on Ridley Island.

“Prince Rupert is ideally located and that is why we are here,” he said, adding the need for LNG in countries across Asia is only on the rise.

“We’re taking a low cost product to a high value market... On Ridley Island there is road and rail access, a nat-

Swaffield said the company is expecting a final investment decision in 2016 to get gas to the growing Asian markets in 2020 or 2021. In the meantime, the company has budgeted for an office in Prince Rupert in the coming

months.

“It’s something we’re looking at for this summer.

It would mainly be an informational office, with Herb [Pond] and maybe one other person, to start and would grow as activity related to the project picks up,” he said.

Dancers to end season with news

KITIMAT - Dance Kitimat presents its annual year-end show on Sunday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m at the Mount Elizabeth Theatre.

It is excellent entertainment for the whole family. Dancers from ages four-through-17 will

put their best foot forward in a variety of ballet, jazz and contemporary pieces, choreographed by Mrs. Emily Toews and Ms. Monica Kapelar.

The dances will be presented as breaking news stories by two experienced and witty news anchors, Ms. Kaitlyn Hartmann and Mr. Nathan Closter.

Dance Kitimat students did very well at the recent Pacific Northwest Music Festival in Terrace. The studio entered two groups in the festival and both placed first in their respective classes.

Pioneer Angel: Doctor Dorothea Bower Walter Thorne

D

r. Dorothea Bower was a young idealist who made a difference to many lives in our valley. This spunky maverick was so much ahead of her time; going to university when women were encouraged not to, and entering a profession which was exclusively the realm of men.

This was totally unheard of in 1904. Then travelling north on a remote distant wilderness adventure, so far away from her comfortable existence in Ontario.

The challenges were staggering; resentment, suspicion, etc. Few people then would believe that a woman could be a competent doctor; but she was, and much more.

Who was this woman who came north and became a favorite of so many?

Dorothea received her MD at Trinity Medical College in Toronto in 1904. She was then recruited by the Methodist Church Missionary Society. Just weeks after graduation, she headed off on the train to Vancouver. She then booked passage on the steamship, Danube, north to Hartley Bay. According to the account by Kitimat’s Elizabeth Varley Anderson in her book, “Kitimat My

Valley”, the journey from Toronto to Kitimat took nearly three weeks, including ten days staying with the missionary in Hartley Bay before passage to Kitamaat was arranged.

She apparently was not impressed by the unending days of rain while waiting for her ticket to her mission home at Kitamaat.

Eventually she arrived aboard the Tees on the 23rd of June and was greeted at the wharf by a worried Reverend Raley, who quickly hustled her off to see her first patient, a desperately sick boy.

Dr. Bower was expected to be far more than a doctor.

In addition, she was expected to teach a full slate of subjects at the school and help to direct the Girl’s Home.

Reverend Raley was no doubt relieved to have a trained physician arrive as it took the pressure off himself who would often have to administer frontier medicine as explained in several issues of his newspaper the Na Na Kwa. In the January 1903 issue of the same paper, Raley described how even amputations were conducted by himself, prior to the arrival of university trained professionals like Dr. Bower.

Dr. Bower’s summers were reportedly extra special, providing greater freedom and opportunity for visiting.

During the summer, school was out and a great many village residents were working at distant canneries down by Rivers Inlet, so visiting and recreation was a possibility.

Dorothea saved many lives and interestingly, she even met her husband to be in a Doctor patient relationship.

It all started when a desperate Jack Fountain staggered into the Anderson Ranch having hiked in from Terrace along the mail route trail. He had been working as a timber surveyor when his wounds from devil’s club began to fester and then developed into blood poisoning. He was desperate for medical attention which was also unavailable in Thornhill. The nearest doctor was Dorthea at Kitamaat Mission.

We do know she had two sons who never returned from World War II. One was a captain killed in Italy and the other was an aviator, shot down over France.

We do not know if she ever returned to her early haunts on the North Coast. She was, however, an inspiring pioneer who had certainly made a difference with many lives in the north.

On Mr. Fountain’s arrival, George Anderson rowed to the village to fetch the doctor. Initially, it was thought that amputation of the arm would be necessary but under Dr. Bower’s competent care, starting with lancing and using a poultice, the recovery was remarkable.

Needless to say Dr. Bower was a heroine.

Fountain adored this woman who had saved his life and his arm.

Although considerably older, Jack Fountain must have had considerable charm, as Dorothea was considered quite the catch. She eventually agreed to marry him, which they did back in Ontario at the home of her parents.

Unfortunately for Kitamaat, Dorthea Fountain never again practiced medicine in the Kitimat Valley. She settled down in the Fraser Valley at Abbotsford, not far from Chilliwack, where the Anderson’s eventually re-settled. Dorothea went

Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance.

A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal...to oneday join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream.

“Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” said Marlee Stein. “With all the lessons I have taken, I hope

it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.”

MLA-elect in no rush to quit city council

PRINCE RUPERT - City Councillor and MLA-elect Jennifer Rice said she is in no rush to give up her spot on council, but acknowledges it something that will likely happen sooner than later.

Rice, running for the NDP, handily won the North Coast riding on May 14 with 56.6 per cent of the popular vote compared to 33.13 per cent for Liberal candidate Judy Fraser and 10.26 per cent for Green candidate Hondo Arendt.

“I’m not going to make any abrupt changes. I am going to stay on council as MLA-elect and it is too soon to say what the future holds,” she said.

“My suspicion is that it is not appropriate to do both so the question is, when is the best time to step down that will have the least impact on the community.”

While Rice won in the riding, the NDP lost seats in an election that resulted in a majority Liberal government.

Rice said she and others in the NDP caucus are still processing the surprising loss.

“We spoke during a phone meeting and I think we’re all pretty gobsmacked with the provincial results.... Over the next few weeks there will be an analysis of what unfolded

in the election,” she said, noting she already has two preferred portfolios for any potential critic role.

“I think Ferries is an appropriate critic role for where we are, but I’m also interested in mental health advocacy. It is a big issue here in the north and I think it would be a good fit.”

Although the Liberals won a majority government, with Premier Christy Clark campaigning heavily on the benefits of growing the LNG industry, the Liberal candidates lost in the ridings of both Kitimat and Prince Rupert where the terminals would be located. Rice said that may point to putting too much emphasis on an uncertain commodity.

“I think she embellished what LNG would provide us. It feels almost unfair to people in the north to make these grandiose promises for something that may or may not come... To tie the province’s entire wealth to LNG is pretty premature and a little risky,” she said, noting that realistic development of LNG exports could be done.

“People in Prince Rupert are pretty embracing of it, as are people in Port Edward, but there are other considerations. For example, the

SMITHERS - After a two-year break following a 13-year binge on touring, Rachelle van Zanten is refreshed and back on tour with her slide guitar in support of her new CD “Oh Mother.”

“There’s really a true joy in delivering a really good live show,” van Zanten said. “I’m starting to feel that excitement again. I’ve got my mojo back.”

The renewed excitement about performing live, van Zanten said, is in part thanks to playing with a fresh set of musicians who add to the creativity of the songwriting process.

“They’re an incredible band from all over the globe,” she said.

Oh Mother and the songs on the CD are, van Zanten said, a tribute to her mother who passed away, the joy of experiencing motherhood for the first time and an homage to Mother Earth.

Van Zanten took up the slide guitar when she was 17 after she saw Lester Quitzau perform at the Midsummer Music Festival. “It just enthralled me, it moved me, it reached the core of my being,” van Zanten said of Quitzau’s skill on slide guitar.

She squirrelled up enough courage and asked Quitzau how to play slide guitar.

Quitzau graciously gave her a steel slide and showed her the basics.

Rachelle van Zanten is back on the road and appearing in Terrace May 24.

“I’ve been unstoppable ever since,” van Zanten said.

When she’s in writing mode, van Zanten said the music typically comes first as she plays on her guitar.

“Usually a motif or a line will stick and I just keep going for it,” she explained. “The whole mood of the music will evoke the lyrical content of the song.”

The mood underlying many of van Zanten’s songs, including some on Oh Mother, shine light on the plight of the environment and people crying for help and the stories people from around the world share with her.

The messages in her songs have led some media to refer to van Zanten as a social activist, a label she admits to wearing proudly.

“It makes me feel good standing up for people and their belief

system,” she said.

“A lot of people are overwhelmed with all this development coming in.”

Her most famous song, My Country, is precisely one of those songs.

“That’s one of those songs I needed to work out because I felt it was a very important message,” she said referring to the plight of Tahltan women protecting their land and the Sacred Headwaters against coal bed methane extraction

Leadership group named in Terrace

TERRACE - Janice Shaben will lead the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce for a second two-year term.

The selection came at the organization’s May 16 annual general meeting.

Joining her on the executive as vice president will be Leydi Noble who will also serve a two-year term.

The treasurer is Val Gauvin and she has one year left of a two-year term.

There had been a first vice president and a second vice president but these positions were rolled into one vice president following a change in the chamber’s constitution.

The board is made up of a combination of existing and new directors.

Loralie Thomson from My Fitness has one year left of a twoyear term as does Janine Kraft of the Investors Group.

Steve Dotto from the Northern Savings Credit Union has just

finished a one-year term and will now serve a two-year term.

New to the board are Neil Courtney from Skeena Valley Exteriors and Interiors, John Ryan from Nechako Northcoast Construction Services and Christine Leclerc from Hawkair.

“It’s exciting that we

have new directors on the board,” said chamber executive director Carol Fielding.

“But we are still short and welcome anyone interested in joining the board.”

The chamber acts as the area’s business voice and organizes business activities.

That follows its mis-

sion statement which is: “To be the recognized voice of business committed to the development and enhancement of the economic well being of the Terrace area...

The history of the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce dates back to September 17, 1927.

Council approves new mural on McBride

PRINCE RUPERT - City council has backed down from their request to approve any new mural on McBride.

Proponents of the Paint Prince Rupert program were seeking approval to paint over the existing marine mural between 8th Ave. East and 9th Ave. East to kick off the new season of painting.

When the idea first came to council on April 22, council

said they would like to approve the design and would only give the go ahead if the Ministry of Transportation and Prince Rupert Community Arts Council said they were okay with it.

Chief financial officer Dan Rodin told council on May 13 that neither group raised a concern and recommended council approve the mural sight-unseen.

“I guess we’re approving a surprise. I would like to see what it looks like before

it goes up, but I’m okay with surprises too,” said Councillor Gina Garon.

“My understanding is the mural was first painted by some kids from the Arts Council. My thinking is those kids are now grown up adults and are probably ok with the mural being painted over,” said Councillor Jennifer Rice.

The mural comes at no cost to the City, but Rodin said that may change as the years go by.

“Our agreement with the Ministry of Transportation is for minor maintenance,” he said, noting that the existing mural has lasted for decades but the City would have to cover any touch-ups on the new artwork.

“Hopefully this will last as long and there will be another budding artist 20 years from now who will look at what is there and bring the idea for another surprise to council.”

TERRACE - City councillor Bruce Bidgood was voted in as vice president of the North Central Local Government Association on May 2. Councillor Lynne Christiansen was also appointed as NCLGA representative for the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine.

“I was very fortunate to get almost unanimous support in the Northwest and also from the Northeast,” Bidgood said, though the exact voting numbers are undisclosed. The way succession works, Bidgood thinks he could advance to vice president and then president of the NCLGA in two years.

“It’s time for us to resume a leadership role,” Bidgood said of the position of the Kitimat-Stikine district within the structure of local government in BC. He plans to write a book about the intersection of social work and politics, a space he has inhabited for years.

Rodney Gerald Arthur Gutknecht

Please join Rodney’s friends and family in sharing memories and happy times spent with him.

Muriel Eriksen (Eby) Muriel was born in Prince Rupert on June 29, 1920, one of eight children born to Henrietta and Christian Eby. She outlived her five brothers, Floyd (Buck), Earl, Donald, Robert and John (Brick) Eby, and two sisters Winifred Stewart and Marjorie Whyte.

Muriel was also predeceased by her husband of 50 years Martin Eriksen on May 7, 1991.

She is survived by her three children, Lynne Urquhart, Robert Eriksen (Glenda) and Elaine Oborne (Lorne). Grandma shall be sadly missed by her grandchildren Maureen Halasz (Kornel), Richard Smith (Jennifer), Kalle Oborne, Erika Oborne-Barton (Kevin), Dane, Kevin and Chad Eriksen as well as great-grandchildren Justin and Derek Ounsted, Kennedy and Shelby Smith and Rudy Koen Barton.

Muriel was a wonderful partner to Martin. They both shared a love of travel that they passed on to their children and grandchildren. She was feisty and strong willed until the end and lived her life “her way”.

Muriel passed away April 27, 2013 during an afternoon nap, after having lunch with family. She shall be missed by all that knew her.

Her family would like to thank the third floor staff for their care in her last week of life and a special thank you to everyone else for their kindness and concern.

There shall be no formal service, as this was her request. Her ashes shall be spread in the ocean as this was also her wish.

Rodney Gerald Arthur Gutknecht passed peacefully in his sleep on May 12, 2013 at the Vancouver General Hospital when he succumbed to brain cancer.

Rodney’s passing was sudden and with dignity, but with his two sons, Mark and Benjamin, by his side, he did not leave this world alone. Throughout his fight he kept his good sense of humour and used laughter as his medicine of choice.

Rodney will be sadly missed by his loving family, including his sister Sheryl, his two brothers Randy and Russell, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. A celebration of life will be held at the Rod and Gun Club on Saturday, May 25 from 2 to 6pm.

KITSUMKALUM BAND

HEALTH DIRECTOR

General: Under the direction of, and reporting to the Band Manager, the Health Director will be the senior coordinator of the Kitsumkalum Health Services as described in the Kitsumkalum Health Work Plan. The Health Director supervises all staff and works collaboratively with the Kitsumkalum Health team.

Duties: • Provide co-ordination and support to programs in the Kitsukalum First Nation community, to raise the level of health awareness and services in the community.

• Develop and maintain integrated holistic programs and services in association with other social, education, and community programs; • Develop budgets and administer financial records of the Kitsumkalum Health Programs; • Ensure reports are made regularly to Kitsumkalum Community and funding sources; • Ensure Tsimshian culture is respected and used as a basis for Health Service delivery and program implementation; • Attend workshops, conferences and training programs to increase skills and knowledge in public health; • Submit funding proposals to various funding agencies for funds to develop and implement Health Services and Programs in the community; • Ensure that health needs are identified, priorities set, and health care plans (work plans) are developed for the health programs; • Ensure Health Staff meetings are held that take into consideration issues pertaining to the provision of health services; • Establish policy directions reflecting the community’s philosophy and goals; • Review policies, establish standards of performance regarding personnel, management practices and service delivery.

• Liaise and partner with other Health Authorities to further health goals and services; • Make recommendations to the Chief and Council on the overall direction, leadership, policy and control of management of their health programs and services; • Build capacity of Kitsumkalum Health Staff with suitable training that would enhance the health services being provided.

Kermodes win Senior Girls soccer zones

TERRACE - The Caledonia Kermodes senior girls’ soccer team is heading to provincials for the eighth year straight following a tight zone tournament in Smithers May 10-11.

In the first game on Friday, the Kermodes met Kitimat’s Mount Elizabeth Secondary School (MESS) in the first match.

At the end of regulation play, the game was tied at three, so the team’s heading into overtime – and then double overtime, where Cal scored to win the game.

The next match saw them up against Smithers – the team who has been Cal’s toughest competitors throughout the short season.

And Smithers proved they weren’t going to make it easy for Cal to take zones, winning 1-0.

On Saturday, Cal faced off against MESS again, this time beating them handily 3-0 in a crucial win.

“The tournament was a double knockout format,” said coach Duncan Stewart. “Cal had to come through the back door to beat Smithers in the final.”

Which is exactly what they did – winning 1-0 in the final game to qualify for provincials.

This year, provincials are in Courtenay, B.C. May 30 - June CONTRIBUTED / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR 1 where they will compete against 15 other teams from around the province.

TERRACE - BC Motocross Championship Series Rounds 7 and 8 happened May 11 and 12 at the Terrace Motocross track, located right across from the new industrial site on the Kitimat highway.

And Sunday was an Amateur National Qualifier event for those who wanted a spot held to race in the National series.

The Terrace track has been called one of the best tracks in B.C and in Canada by some riders who have travelled across Canada and to the United States – all thanks to Northwest Community College’s Heavy Equipment Operator Training Course which happens at the local track,

said motocross volunteer Tanny Donecz.

“These guys have done an amazing job,” she said.

The weekend saw a Terrace Cash Challenge open to pro and intermediate riders with pro rider Brock Hoyer coming from Williams Lake.

Hoyer recently travelled to Seattle and qualified for Super cross, but didn’t make the main event due to regular racing challenges like pile ups in front and his own wipeout.

Intermediate Rider Jesse Pettis from Prince George, a regular at the Terrace races, showed up to grab some cash – and he did just that, taking second place.

Hoyer took first and intermediate rider Rob Hawrys from Vanderhoof, a last minute addition,

rounded out third place.

The BC Motocross Association has seen a huge increase in rider entries from last year – this year they’re seeing big move-ups in all classes, especially in the Intermediate and Pro classes, meaning heavy competition.

We have some great local talent who participate in the BC Championship series, said Donecz, and some who like to just come out and play in their backyard.

If ever you’re out and about our way, come check out the Terrace Motocross Track, she said.

This weekend May 25 and 26 sees a fun ride event in Smithers and the next races in Terrace are Rounds 12 and 13 of the BCMA Championship Series July 20 and 21.

Howard Lynn and Larry Hope took home the top prize with a net of 123, Sten Sundin and Derek Ridgeway placed second with a total of 126.

It took a countback to determine the third and fourth place winners, with two teams tied at 127, but Willy Weckel and Bob Hays bested Doug Kydd and Ross McNish when all was said and done.

This little girl is looking for a understanding home. Two years ago, this little thing was found wandering around. She had been left in a tote outside of our shelter in the winter. She eluded capture many, many, times. There were people trying to get her at all hours of the day. She’d be laying at Thornhill Elementary School. Then she’d be seen here at the shelter. Then she’d be on the frontage road dodging traffic. Our fire chief spotted her one morning laying outside of the fire hall so we decided to set our dog trap there in an effort to catch her. Well that worked. Due to some unforeseen circumstances Melody has found herself here once again.

She’s approx.. 5 years old, and needs to be spayed. She has a bit of issues with housetraining, but if you’re willing to put the time in this could be fixed in no time. She is spunky when outside on a leash. Is good with other dogs and cats. Call us at 250-638-1565.

The event will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and will include a photo booth, professional face painting, a large craft tent, and headlining musicians Rachelle van Zanten and Richard Wilson.

Local groups and businesses are sponsoring the event. Sponsors include Ridley Terminals Inc. employee community fund, Northern Savings Credit Union, the Prince Rupert Port Authority, Overwaitea, Safeway, Success by Six North Coast and the Prince Rupert Early Years committee.

All activities will be free of cost for those in attendance, with the event wrapping up at 3 p.m. If it is too rainy, the event will be held at the Civic Centre.
