Last minute tax changes in PoCo Budget error corrected for this year but 2012 issue still a concern By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Port Coquitlam councillors worked quickly this week to rectify a mistake in the 2013 financial plan that would have seen taxpayers hand over more money to the city than staff intended. The change comes after a review of this

year’s and the 2012 budget found that a 1% infrastructure levy — money used to replace the city’s aging roads and facilities — was duplicated. Residents can now expect to see a 2.84% increase when their property tax bill arrives, instead of the 3.7% that was originally announced, a difference of approximately $16.51 for the average single-family home owner. see COUNCIL, page 12

A 16-year-old Riverside secondary student with a “survivalist” mentality who had vanished for three weeks from his Port Coquitlam home is now back safe and sound. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said he was informed by investigators at around 1:30 p.m. yesterday that Dominique Delagiraudais had returned to his family home. Police were at his residence during the afternoon to determine his whereabouts since April 21 when he disappeared after a spat with his mother. During a press conference on Monday, Marie Delagiraudais told reporters the disagreement

was “just teenage-mother stuff” and she didn’t think anything of it when he left. H o w e v e r, w h e n Dominique didn’t come home the following day, she called the Coquitlam RCMP, which activated its missing persons unit and, over the next few days, police conducted an extensive area search. Last week, Coquitlam Search and Rescue combed the length of the Coquitlam River after a bag with several of his possessions was stashed close to the family home. Mounties believed he was camping in the wilderness as he took a large black duffel bag full of supplies with him, indicating he was ready for an extended stay. jwarren@tricitynews.com
