Voters head to the polls to select next B.C. government Voting from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
British Columbians head to the polls today for the 40th provincial election. And in keeping with tradition, will the student vote once again parallel the general vote in our local riding? On Monday, almost 750 students at J.L. Crowe Secondary cast their ballots in a mock election for the official candidates in their riding as part of Student Vote B.C. Elementary students in Rossland, Fruitvale, Salmo and Glenmerry also took the opportunity to experience the democratic process firsthand, in an authentic in-school vote. However, the results will be kept under lock and key until Wednesday to ensure that they do not sway the election. âThe Student Vote results are kept a secret until the general election polls close,â said Kate Fane, organizer for Student Vote BC. âAlthough we do hope that children participation inspires the parents to vote as well.â Patrick Audet, principal at Glenmerry Elementary, said the school has been part of the program four times, and the results always prove interesting. âI am curious if the student votes will parallel the actual voting results,â he said.
âI predict that on Wednesday morning the trend of the Glenmerry students will be quite accurate to what actually happens in our Kootenay West riding.â According to the Elections BC website, advance voting, which began last Wednesday, saw just over 2,000 residents cast their votes in the Kootenay West riding. That figure reflects around six per cent of the over 31,000 registered voters in the district. On Monday, the candidates spread out across the riding to campaign and encourage the voting public to cast a ballot today. âWeâre getting ready for E-Day tomorrow,â Katrine Conroy told the Castlegar News. âWeâre going to supporters houses who are helping us with getting out the vote.â Independent Joseph Hughes drew his campaign to a close in Greater Trail. BC Liberal candidate Jim Postnikoff, split time between Castlegar and Trail on Monday, although his election day schedule was uncertain, campaign manager, Jesse Postnikoff told the News. Voting places are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. In Trail, cast a ballot at the Memorial Centre, Trail Middle School or Glenmerry Elementary. In Rossland, at the Legion, or in the community halls of Genelle, Oasis, Warfield, Montrose and Fruitvale.

Friess chosen Miss Trail BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
It was an evening of cheers and plenty of happy tears. On Friday night, Cheyanne Friess, Miss Italo Canadese, was crowned Miss Trail 2013 while Emily Dawson, Miss Trail Legion, was selected as Trail Princess. It was a night filled with honours for Friess who was also named Miss Congeniality (an award voted by fellow ambassadors); and âmost dedicatedâ, an award for recognition of complete and uncompromising dedication. âI am so happy and excited,â she said just after being crowned. âI am most looking forward to travelling
around B.C., meeting people, and representing Trail.â For seven months Friess and the six vying candidates trained for the big night, which included honing essay and speech writing skills, practising public speaking, and an introduction to proper etiquette. However, Friess said that the best lesson she has learned so far, is to âjust be yourself.â âOver the course of the program I never changed who I was, and that is a big strength to learn,â she said. âAnd it is important to hold your head high and be confident in yourself.â See AWARDS, Page 5

Warm temperatures and sunny skies made for one of the busiest Silver City Days Saturday in years as the crowds gathered for the parade and seemed to stay on for the rest of the day. The 50th anniversary festivities began Thursday night with the unveiling of the refurbished Home of Champions monument in downtown Trail in front of over 100 people and wrapped up with the sounds of music in Gyro Park on Sunday afternoon. In between, steady streams of fairgoers attended events ranging from the Trail Ambassador pageant on Friday to the always-popular parade on Saturday morning and the spectacular fireworks closing out Saturday evening. Over 200 hundred runners took part in Sunday's fun run followed by a day of music at Gyro Park. The downtown food court and midway was the usual centre of attention after getting off to a rough start on Wednesday when a failed generator shut down the rides. But things ran smoothly for the remainder of Silver City Days. See POLICE, Page 3
