❙ May Days Volunteering a great way to give back

hall of fame, of sorts. As the Corporation of Delta’s volunteer coordinator, she works with more than 2,000 volunteers annually who help make the municipality’s many programs and events a reality. But only her favourite volunteers make it on to her wall, which has hundreds of local faces on it. “I take them down and put up new ones every year,” she says. “I tell them their goal is to get on my wall.” The Corporation of Delta relies on its legion of volunteers to provide swimming and skating lessons for the developmentally disabled, to keep local parks clean and free of invasive plant species, to plant trees, and to help run public events like Canada Day and

the upcoming May Days parade. “You get to meet some really amazing people in this job,” says Jamieson-Powell. “We’d be lost without our volunteers.” Without their help, she says the municipality wouldn’t be able to offer many of its programs, and special events, such as the annual Breakfast with Santa, would likely become prohibitively expensive if they were operated solely by paid staff. “There would be no Tour de Delta, there would be no Delta Triathlon,” Jamieson-Powell says. “There’s just no way we could put on that event without volunteers.” The majority of volunteers donating their time are high school students and young adults. For them, volunteering provides not only valuable work experience, but great life experience as well.
