Bears busy & hungry Mom and 3 cubs roaming in area of Hyde Creek By Diane Strandberg THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Conservation officers are warning Port Coquitlam residents to lock up their garbage and get rid of attractants after a bear family was treed near Minnekhada middle school on Friday. Tranquilizers failed to subdue the bears, which
have been eating garbage from homes near the school all winter, and one homeowner has already been fined for leaving garbage out. “Friday was the second week in a row we’ve had them in close proximity to the school,” said conservation officer Cody Ambrose, who said the sow and three cubs were chased into the woods but will likely return, potentially causing more problems. see ‘THEY ARE’, page A6
Dental help for local homeless Clinic at PoCo church will give free dental care By Diane Strandberg THE TRI-CITY NEWS JANIS WARREN/THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Coquitlam’s Jennifer Gillis, 17, returns to the stage tonight (Wednesday) in the lead role of Millie in Gleneagle secondary school’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” And the Grade 11 student, who took a break last fall after placing seventh in the nationally televised CBC reality show “Over the Rainbow,” will be back before the cameras again on July 1 when she sings the national anthem on Parliament Hill in Ottawa — an invitation that came directly from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. See article on page A29.
A nearly four-year struggle to find a way to provide free dental work for Tri-City homeless people has resulted
in the opening of the first ever free dental clinic in Port Coquitlam. On Saturday, Rob Thiessen of the Hope for Freedom Society and dentists Candace Woodman and Kevin Lauwers welcomed supporters to the Tri-City Dental Aid Clinic. see THIESSEN, page A9
