Candidates line up on both sides of Kinder Morgan expansion

Kinder Morgan is proposing to spend $5.4 billion to expand its Trans Mountain pipeline. The proposal would triple the amount of oil running through the pipe each day, increasing it to 890,000 barrels. Citizens and organizations have raised concerns that the expansion could pose a danger to the environment. The pipeline runs from Alberta to Burnaby, through areas of Abbotsford. In January 2012, a spill did occur within a contained tank area at the Sumas Mountain facility. The Abbotsford News asked local candidates “Are you in favour of Kinder Morgan’s proposal to expand its pipeline?” Here’s how they replied:

Mike de Jong (Liberal) said if all safety and environmental conditions are met, then he would support pipeline expansion. Sukhi Dhami (NDP) is not in favour, calling it too risky. Moe Gill (independent) is “not very happy” about the pipeline expansion and said he would not support it. Stephen O’Shea (Green) is against, saying Alberta will reap the benefit while B.C. assumes all the environmental risks. He doesn’t believe that, once the pipeline is completed, many jobs will be created. Paul Redekopp (Conservative) supports expansion, saying it will bring needed jobs to B.C. Continued on A3
