LITTLE OAK REALTY
Quick actions by two passersby prevented the death of a 39-year-old Burnaby man on Saturday. Witnesses of a single motor vehicle accident at Lafferty pit (east of Christina Lake) freed the male driver from his vehicle on Saturday at 3:52 p.m. “The lone occupant of the vehicle was travelling westbound on Highway 3 when he lost control at a corner, went off the road to the left and the vehicle rolled down an embankment and came to a rest upside down in Roadside Creek.” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. The male, who has not yet been identified, was submerged under water and trapped in his vehicle. Two young men travelling along the same

route stopped when they came upon the accident and quickly ran down the embankment to pull the gentleman from his vehicle. “One person in particular that we are aware of waded in the water up to his chest, got into the vehicle and managed to cut the seatbelt to get the person out of the vehicle which was submerged in the water and he was unconscious,” said Harrison. The staff sergeant added there was a nurse, who was also passing by, that helped to guide the two rescuers through CPR and first aid, which revived the Burnaby man. Harrison estimates that the driver was submerged under water for nearly five minutes before he was rescued. “Christina Lake Fire arrived shortly after and using ropes and special water suits were able to get the victim to the shore and transfer him to B.C. Ambulance, which was now on scene,” said
Ken Gresley-Jones, fire chief of Christina Lake Fire Rescue in a press release. The driver was taken to Trail Regional Hospital, conscious but treated for having water in his lungs. “The bystanders are credited with saving the life of the driver and we have identified one of the individuals involved and the other individual we don’t have any idea who he is and we are trying to identify them because we definitely want to recognize the fact that they definitely did save this person’s life,” said Gresley-Jones. Jones said those who helped save this man’s life were asked to leave by someone (not from the Christina Lake fire department) before they could get their names. “We hope we can make contact with you to extend our sincere thanks for your selfless efforts,” said the fire chief.
