First Saturday goes from concept to reality C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

First Saturday is a go in Kimberley. The idea has gone from concept to reality at an incredibly quick pace, and has

even found some funding, says Carol Fergus from the Kimberley Arts Council/Centre 64, as part of the Kimberley Arts Culture and Heritage Committee.

Fergus first pitched the concept of First Saturday about six weeks ago to people representing different clubs and organizations in Kimberley.

First Saturdays are simply different activities planned by different groups for the first Saturday in every month. The hope is that with a number of

events planned, people will flow from one cross-promoted event to the next. Events will be collectively promoted. The City of Kimber-

ley, Tourism Kimberley and the Chamber of Commerce are all on board, and First Saturdays, through the Arts Council have secured $11,000 through the BC

Creative Communities program to provide support, enhancement and promotion of First Saturday. See FIRST, page 5

Provincial election

Earl Olsen to run for Conservatives Semi-retired businessman from Fairmont to try for MLA seat in CR-R C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

What’s driving Earl Olsen to enter the political arena for the first time is a belief that the people of Columbia River - Revelstoke need more of a choice in the coming provincial election. “I’ve never run for anything, not even student council,” Olsen said. “What draws me is moving to the valley (Fairmont Hot Springs) in 2006, coming from Alberta which was booming, and talking to a lot of folks. I could see what was happening. Kids are leaving because they Photo submitted can’t have a career here. Earl Olsen, Conservative Party candidate for Columbia River - Revelstoke to be another way rather than spending more money, taxing more people.” Olsen says he chose the relatively new part, the Conservative Party of BC because he appreciates their platform of lower taxes, careful spending and core values. “The Conservatives value representatives who represent their constituents first and the

Party second. “I think the Conservative Party offers the best option for the future. I don’t think that anyone needs ten more years of the Liberals or NDP.” When asked about splitting the right-leaning vote away from the BC wLiberals, Olsen says that’ s not a concern for him. See OLSEN, page 5
