Cathy Van Amam wants to say thanks to a Good Samaritan, and thanks to the RCMP for sharing the story of keepsakes turned into the detachment. Van Amam, on Wednesday, was reunited with a fake Reader’s Digest book that contained a storage compartment inside. The book contained some family documents, including her parents’ driver’s licenses which showed the couple were born in 1913 and 1915, and her mom’s birth certificate. “My boss’ wife texted him this (Wednesday) morning to tell him about the story that had

been in The Morning Star,” said Van Amam. “I’m very happy to have received these items back and would very much like to say thanks to the person who turned them in. If I could say thanks in person, I would.” Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk told media Monday that on April 10, a good citizen turned in the false book which opened up and contained items such as the identification and some jewelry inside. Molendyk said the items were likely taken from a break-and-enter and Van Amam confirmed her house had been broken into and the fake book stolen. “The Vernon RCMP thank our media part-
ners for helping to get the property back where it belonged,” said Molendyk. “The items were of great sentimental value as the parents had passed away.” Unfortunately for Van Amam, one piece of jewelry taken from her home that she had hoped was in the false book was not. It is a charm bracelet dating back to the 1970s. “It had a heart on it with our wedding date – my husband has passed away – engraved on it,” said Van Amam. “There were charms from when my son and daughter were born, charms from around the world that my parents brought back. I bought that bracelet in my late teens. My kids remember me wearing it.”

Greater Vernon swimmers will be high and dry for a little longer later this year. The Regional District of North Okanagan board was told Wednesday that the Vernon Recreation Complex aquatic centre will be closed from Aug. 26 to Sept. 22 for installation of new dehumidifiers and repairs to the structure. “We will contact the user groups and make them aware of this,” said Keith Pinkoski, parks planner. The pool would be generally closed from Aug. 26 to Sept. 16 for routine maintenance, such as painting the pool surface. However, a longer period of time is required to ensure the repairs get done. Also, painting can’t be done when the structure construction is creating dust. While some directors questioned why the closure can’t start earlier in August when use of the pool is traditionally slow, Pinkoski says that isn’t possible. “There is some space already booked then for usage,” he said, adding that situation forced the work to occur later in September. The repairs are necessary because the original dehumidification system was undersized when the pool was built in 1993. The unit was shut off because of expensive repairs needed to keep it running, but that led to roof and wall damage in the pool area. The repairs are expected to cost about $1.7 million
