more told the packed room at the 19th annual Cattle Baron’s Ball last Saturday night. 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of 4-H Canada and next year will be the century-mark for 4-H in B.C.
B.C. 4-H Manager Kevin Rothwell, a professional auctioneer from Vernon, was on hand to call the live auction. He said he was a 4-H kid in Saskatchewan and his parents had also been in 4-H. “It’s in my DNA,”
he joked. He pointed out that 4-H is active in 80 countries around the world. The annual Cattle Baron’s Ball is a fundraiser for the club that features a dinner and dance with many donated items offered at the silent auction. As well, the 4-H kids themselves are sold in a live auction – a half day’s labour from the junior members, while the senior members are contracted out for a full day’s work. Rylonn Elliot went for the highest bid in the Slave Auction. His uncle Ryan Elliot picked him up for $650. This year the kids were given the option of working for the highest bidder or they could pledge to put in their time working for local non-profit groups such as the Kettle River Lions, senior’s homes and museums. “What we all get out of this is the kids are learning to donate their time to the community,” said club leader Greg MacDonald. “Because we all know that to be a successful community and have successful organizations, we need volunteers.” Sonny Boys provided live music and West Boundary Road Rescue was offering a ride service. Doug Fossen, who leads the Ranch Horse division, said that 10 years ago there were 6,000 head of cattle in the area; there are now closer to 3,000. MacDonald said that this decline in the local beef herd was one reason the club decided to branch out into other projects a couple of years
