PoCo couple missed blasts By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Two Tri-City residents participating in the Boston Marathon on Monday said they crossed the finish line just three minutes before a pair of bombs exploded. Port Coquitlam runner Angela Cullen Spooner said in an email that she and her husband Gordon Spooner feared more explosions could occur and quickly left the finish line area following the blasts. “The course was shut down shortly following,” she wrote in an email to The Tri-City News. see ‘STUNNED’, page A9

After more than 20 years in public office — and many more years of public service — NDP MLA Diane Thorne is retiring, and she’d rather talk about her past than her future. See article on page A14

Medical workers aid injured people at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon on Monday after two explosions shattered the euphoria of the finish line, sending authorities out on the course to carry off the injured while the stragglers were rerouted away from the smoking site of the blasts. Nine Tri-City residents took place in the marathon this year.

In heart-wrenching victim impact statements, the parents of Arto Howley stood in court Tuesday morning in Port Coquitlam and described their devastated lives since the death of their son two years ago — on his first day at daycare. “The last thing I want to

do is stand here in a room full of strangers and... tell you how it feels to leave my healthy, happy baby at daycare and then never see, touch or hold my baby again,” said Victoria Howley. “It was supposed to be a milestone... that has turned into a living nightmare and, for me, a life sentence. “It has destroyed my marriage and changed my outlook on life completely.” see ‘THIS WAS’, page A13
