B.C. party leaders will take part in at least two debates, one on TV and one on radio, in the run-up to the May 14 provincial election.

CKNW radio is hosting a leaders’ debate at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 26.

Invited to take part are B.C. Liberal leader Christy Clark, NDP leader Adrian Dix, Green Party leader Jane Sterk and B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins.

A one-hour television debate is set for the following Monday, April 29 at 7 p.m. on Global TV, also featuring the four major party leaders.

Clark said Tuesday she is challenging Dix to a one-onone televised debate proposed for May 6. Dix said it would be “disrespectful” to voters and other party leaders to exclude them.

Poll finds 20 per cent undecided The NDP has a 17-point lead on the B.C. Liberals among decided voters, but one in five people are still undecided, according to a poll released this week by Insights West.

The NDP had support of 45 per cent of decided voters, compared to 28 per cent for the B.C. Liberals. The Green Party was supported by 15 per cent, with 10 per cent backing the B.C. Conservatives.

Insights West president Steve Mossop said the poll shows 25 per cent of undecided voters are leaning towards the B.C. Liberals, with 20 per cent leaning NDP. The NDP’s biggest lead was in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.

In other parts of B.C., the com-

bined decided and leaning vote was closer, with 37 per cent for the NDP and 33 per cent for the B.C. Liberals.

The poll contacted 855 adult B.C. residents in the last week of March.

NDP offers movie tax break An NDP government would increase tax credits for movie, TV and video game production in B.C., to counter higher tax breaks offered by Ontario and Quebec.

NDP leader Adrian Dix said Tuesday that if his party forms a government in the May 14 election, it will increase the tax credit for labour expenditures by foreign and domestic productions in B.C. from 33 per cent to 40.

That would cost the provincial treasury $45 million a year, assuming increased movie and TV production.

In 2009, Ontario stepped up its tax credits to 25 per cent of all spending for movie and TV production by foreign companies in the province. Dix said the bigger tax break is to reverse a decline of 3,500 direct and indirect jobs in B.C. last year, with early results for 2013 showing a 32 per cent decline compared to last year.

B.C. Liberal MLA Bill Bennett, minister of community, sport and cultural development, said earlier this year that Ontario’s tax credits are not sustainable. Bennett pointed to more than $2 million provided last year for BC Film + Media, which offers financing and marketing support to domestic projects, and the BC Film Commission, a provincial office that helps producers secure permits, crews and shooting locations in B.C.

NEWS School buses have been cancelled… forever ?

When my father was growing up on a homestead a mere five miles from where I live today, there was no such thing as school buses.

A one room school house served the students from approximately a five mile radius.

The ones who lived close enough walked.

Others rode horses that spent the day munching hay in the school barn while their young riders learned their ABC’s. My father lived just over a mile away so he travelled to school by foot along with his older sister.

The pair often broke trail pushing their way uphill through waist deep snow. Like so many of his generation, Dad loves to say in his day he walked to school uphill...both ways The school taught grades

one through eight; if students wanted an education beyond that they had to board in town.

When I started school I had to walk a mile as well but I only had to walk in one direction. We lived in the bottom of a valley and the road ran out when it got to our house. In the morning our parents drove us to the top of the hill to catch the school bus.

In the afternoons we walked home. Telling my children that when

I was a kid I walked home from school one way, downhill, doesn’t carry the same bite as my father’s version.

Worse, by the time I was in Grade 3 a road had been built past our house and from then on the bus picked me up at the end of our driveway. There aren’t a lot of bragging rights in that.

I attended the same school in the same building my father did — the same building my mother later taught in — only by the time I attended it had been moved a few miles north and had a second room built onto it.

When we got to grade seven we had the luxury of being bussed into town and back, no longer having to board in town to further our education.

hour by bus depending on who was riding.

There was always that one kid who lived further from the rest and added 15 minutes to the run, through no fault of their own.

Some years that kid was me.

Most kids hated having to get up so early or home so late, but not me.

I loved my time on the bus. It was free time to socialize, read or daydream or sometimes to catch up on homework. There was a hierarchy to the seating plan. You started off in Grade 1 sitting behind the driver and by Grade 12 you were in the backseat.

In hindsight I’m not sure why we coveted the backseats. The only benefit was the frost heaves in the spring and some might have argued that was

a curse instead of a blessing. It is hard to describe the excitement of frost heaves to someone who has never ridden a school bus. Rising out of the gravel roads like rural speed bumps, the bus and the students could gain some serious airtime as we sailed over them. Due to some scientific law of gravity which we never bothered to study, the further back you sat the higher you flew.

Some drivers could be coerced into speeding up when approaching a bump, others not so much.

Buses don’t have seatbelts which is kind of bizarre when you think about it. Children who wouldn’t dream of getting into the family vehicle without buckling up are put into buses without a second

thought. The theory is if there were ever an accident getting all the kids out of their seatbelts would pose a bigger risk than going without. Not to mention how they would seriously impede airtime over those frost heaves.

During my elementary years my bus driver was one of the students who had rode his horse to attend the original schoolhouse.

In turn, this same popular driver drove my own sons to school and back. By that time the two room schoolhouse had been torn down and a new fourroom school had been built five miles north of us.

It is still there today.

Kids who ride buses share a common bond.

They know the terror of a mother screaming, “The bus is coming!”

while they search for that missing textbook or lost mitten. They know how it feels to stand at the end of a driveway in the wicked cold for what feels like hours, waiting for a bus that is running late.

And they know the sweetest sound of all; being woken by the words “Go ahead and sleep in. The school buses have been cancelled for today.”

But now the Dawson Creek school district is saying the service is too costly to continue and they’re thinking of cancelling school buses forever. This time those words aren’t so sweet.

Comments received from the public on the Protecting Vulnerable Species: A Draft Five-Year Plan for Species at Risk in British Columbia will be reviewed and summarized on the government website in a frequently asked questions (FAQ) format.

Feedback provided on the plan will be considered in making revisions to the draft plan and informing further development of British Columbia’s species-atrisk program.

The draft plan results from the work of the Species at Risk Task Force.

The task force’s report was released in July 2011 and contained 16 recommendations, ranging from technical advice (e.g., take an ecosystem approach), to making changes to the regulatory framework and launching a wider public consultation process.

All the recommendations of the task force were considered when preparing the draft species-at-risk plan.

The draft plan aligns

with government’s shift to a more coordinated approach to managing B.C.’s natural resources and focuses on five key areas for success.

These include: • Improving species conservation through management at the ecosystem and landscape scale.

• Providing the best available information to support identification, management and recovery of species at risk.

• Encouraging British Columbians to embrace stewardship of species at risk across all lands and waters.

• Applying protection for species at risk consistently across all sectors.

• Measuring and reporting on government’s investments in species at risk.

“The draft plan provides a vision for a balanced, collaborative approach to species-at-risk management in B.C.,” said Environment Minister Terry Lake. “It brings together the numerous activities that the province undertakes for species at risk and

Steve Thomson minister of forest, lands, and natural resource operations echoed Lake, saying speciesat-risk management is a co-operative undertaking, engaging many sectors, organizations and British Columbians, and requires balance between economic, environmental and community needs.

The Species at Risk Task Force provided government with a number of practical suggestions for advancing the provincial effort to manage for vulnerable species

through improvement to existing information and management tools.

“The task force agreed with many of the public comments that emphasized the need for further legislative development,” task force chair Bruce Fraser said.

“The draft plan suggests an ongoing effort to adapt provincial legislation in the years ahead - an effort which should rank as a high priority and be made as specific as possible.”

BC Agriculture Council chair Rhonda Driediger said healthy and vibrant farms already provide significant wildlife habitat throughout the province.

National restaurant chains commit to participate in Informed Dining leaders and public-health partners.

kennel club a great place for training and exercise

Leslie Ernst and her canine friend Summit drove from Quesnel to Williams Lake last weekend to compete in the Cariboo Kennel Club conformation and obedience event held at the Williams Lake Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse Sunday.

Leslie has had dogs competing in agility contests for more than 25 years, and has no plans on stopping anytime soon.

Tips for finding a dog trainer Here are some helpful tips when looking for a dog trainer or puppy classes.

1. What to look for in a trainer It’s essential that the dog trainer you select uses humane training techniques that encourage appropriate behavior through such positive reinforcement as food, attention, play, or praise.

Look for a trainer who ignores undesirable responses or withholds rewards until the dog behaves appropriately.

Training techniques should never involve yelling, choking, shaking the scruff, tugging on the leash, alpha rolling (forcing the dog onto his back), or other actions that frighten or inflict

pain.

2. Where to find a trainer A recommendation from a friend, neighbour, veterinarian, humane society, boarding kennel, or groomer is a good place to start. You can also search online or check the Yellow Pages under “Pet Training.” Don’t assume that a trainer’s membership in a dog trainer association qualifies him as a suitable instructor. Not all associations’ membership criteria will meet your expectations. Also, because no government agency regulates or licenses trainers, it’s that much more important to investigate their qualifications before enrolling in a class. Find out how many years of experience

they have, how they were educated, and what training methods they use. Ask prospective trainers for several references from clients who completed the classes.

3. Group classes Ask the trainer whether you can observe a class in session before signing up. Watch for the following: Is class size limited to allow for individual attention?

Are there separate classes for puppies and adult dogs? Are there different class levels (for example, beginner, intermediate, and advanced)? Are training equipment and methods humane? Does the trainer use a variety of methods to meet dogs’ individual needs? Is proof of vaccination required? Are the students,

both human and canine, enjoying themselves? Are dogs and owners actively encouraged? Is praise given frequently? Are voice commands given in upbeat tones? Are lesson handouts available? Is information available on how dogs learn, basic grooming, problem solving, and related topics?

4. The best age for training Although “puppyhood” is the best time to train and socialize dogs, older dogs can learn new tricks, too. In fact, dogs of all ages can benefit from training. Dogs between 8 and 16 weeks of age should be enrolled in puppy classes. Regular classes are appropriate for dogs 6 months or older.

It’s still easy being Green

This is the first of a series of policy commentaries on the four main parties contesting the 2013 B.C. election.

I’m starting with the B.C. Green Party, which has higher than usual hopes for the 2013 election. It was also the first to put out a substantial policy document, albeit one that is still being debated and altered.

Green Book 2013 continues the utopian positions that only a party with no chance of forming a government has the luxury to put forward.

For example, they would double the area of parks in B.C., but take 100 years to do it. Immediately, they would almost double the carbon tax, taking it from seven to 12 cents on a litre of gasoline.

Greens would extend this steeply increased carbon tax to industries such as natural gas and cement production.

Leader Jane Sterk told me she expects cement producers and the like to adapt, rather than shut down as their competitive position erodes.

And what about the extra billions in carbon tax revenues?

Sterk says most should

continue to go to income tax reductions, as is now the case, because the purpose is to change consumption patterns, not to increase overall tax revenue. Most, but not all.

“We think there is an argument to be made for putting, for a period of time, the increased revenue from the carbon tax into creating the infrastructure that allows people to benefit from a carbon tax,” Sterk said.

That means transit, and potentially retrofits of homes and other buildings as well.

Tax increase aside, this

is essentially the NDP position too. The Greens emphasize wind and geothermal power. Sterk faces the awkward task of arguing against hydroelectric expansion.

A Green government would cancel the Site C dam project on the Peace River. Sterk says it would only serve as a subsidy to liquefied natural gas exports, which she doesn’t believe materialize as international competitors develop.

The Greens’ star candidate, University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, agrees.

Both point to vast reserves of Russian gas that may well get to Asia more quickly and cheaply.

Sterk said the 35,000 existing gas wells in northern B.C. “are not going to be shut down.”

Actually, in the absence of LNG exports, that is exactly what would happen to many of them.

The U.S. has its own shale gas supplies, and is B.C.’s only current export customer.

Converting transport trucks and BC Ferries to LNG fuel isn’t going to maintain the vast industry blooming in northern B.C.

The official Green Party position is to place a moratorium on B.C. gas drilling while a comprehensive water use policy is developed.

Current innovations such as reusing municipal wastewater are ignored.

The Green platform also demands disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, which the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission has already done.

If one were to design a self-fulfilling prophecy that B.C.’s LNG project is doomed to fail, the Green Party platform would be a good place to start.

Reading through Green Book 2013, I’m left with the impression that much of it remains calculated as a soothing message for urban voters who have been convinced it’s courageous to drive their cars down to an anti-tanker protest.

If Weaver, Sterk or any other Greens get elected, it will be surfing a wave of protest votes from people weary of the B.C. Liberals and the NDP. It will not be due to the practicality or even internal consistency of their polices.

It’s still pretty easy being Green.

Driving through Spences Bridge recently, Ted Hlokoff caught view of some fellow four-legged travellers. Highway 8 is renown for bighorn sheep. Hlokoff said during that trip he’d endured three terrible blizzards. “It was like being in an endurance road race with no money or trophy for winning,” he said. Highway 8 on Friday night was dark because the rain switched over to heavy snow and he could only see about three metres in front of his car. “Since most of the road lines are worn away or covered with gravel, driving becomes very dangerous,” Hlokoff added. The pictures are a reminder for travellers to slow down for the bighorn sheep which regularly hang out on Highway 97 at Spences Bridge.

CTF’s three-year push for disclosure of aboriginal politicians’ salaries pays off The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) applauded the federal government for passing and proclaiming Bill C-27 recently.

The legislation that will require aboriginal politicians on all reserves in Canada to disclose their salaries to the public (just like every other politician in the country).

The CTF first began pushing for such the change on Dec. 22, 2009.

“We’re ecstatic this bill has become law as we’ve pushed hard for it over the last three years,” said CTF Prairie Director Colin Craig in a press release.

“Plain and simple, aboriginal politicians should have to disclose their pay to the public just like all other politicians in the country.

The federal government deserves praise for addressing this issue.”

“We really tip our hat to the brave men and

women on reserves who have risked a lot to leak documents or speak out,” added Craig.

“Most people don’t understand it, but it can be really difficult to speak out on reserves. This legislation will help people on reserves hold their officials accountable.”

The CTF began pushing for the bill when Phyllis Sutherland, a whistleblower from the Peguis First Nation, provided copies of outrageous pay information from her community.

At the time, the chief and council from the small community of 3,700 were making more in pay, or close to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s salary.

The story took on national attention and soon after the CTF was flooded with calls and emails from people living on reserves across the country.

“People either had

documents to leak or wanted help getting access to their band’s financial statements. We knew we had to keep pushing hard on this issue,” continued Craig.

The CTF also noted the bill will help clear the names of the many good chiefs and councillors out there who aren’t taking exorbitant pay cheques, but have

been painted with the same brush.

Disclosure will help everyone sort out who is taking advantage of the system and who isn’t.

Education advisory group appointed to make system more flexible The Ministry of Education April 3 announced the formation of a provincial advisory group to review the B.C. provincial student assessment program.

Dr. Blye Frank, Dean of Education, University of British Columbia and Dr. Kris Magnusson, Dean of Education, Simon Fraser University will serve as cochairs.

As outlined in BC’s Education Plan, the Ministry of Education is working to make the kindergarten - Grade 12 education system more flexible, dynamic and adaptable to better prepare students for success in a rapidly changing, global world.

As part of this transformation, the ministry is focusing on a number of key elements and innovations, including student assessment.

The advisory group will examine what is

working, what needs improvement, and what’s required of provincial student assessments to ensure they are generating the information needed to support successful student learning and public accountability for investments in the kindergarten — Grade 12 .

The advisory group will identify and develop guiding principles that can be used to inform future discussions and explorations concerning potential improvements to specific assessment tools and approaches, including the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA).

All of the advisory group’s discussion documents, work plans and outcomes will be posted to the Ministry of Education website.

The advisory group will meet up to four times in the spring of 2013.

Silk Road house concert at Juniper Trails Tuesday Juniper Trails Bed and Breakfast is hosting their final event in a series of six highcalibre house concerts on Tuesday, April 16.

Silk Road, a Vancouver-based world music ensemble, is set to entertain music lovers, threading the cultures of Asia and the world – from classic Chinese solos and intimate duets to multicultural ensembles that rock the house.

Qiu Xia He (pronounced Chew Shah Her) and Andre Thibault, with a charming and effortless blend of Chinese, Celtic and Brazilian sounds, introduce the audience to different cultures through their experience, discoveries, and travels.

Founded in Vancouver in 1991, the ensemble pioneered the kind of Chinese-Western musical fusions that one now hears in acts ranging from The Sparrow Quartet to Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road project.

It has blended Chinese folk and classical music with Celtic, Latin, Arabic, Aboriginal, jazz, and blues music.

Where is BC’s Poverty Reduction Plan?

On March 19, the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition launched a challenge to all political parties to meet its call for a poverty reduction plan for B.C. because it has the highest poverty rate in Canada, yet is one of the last provinces left without a poverty reduction plan.

“According to a recent poll commissioned by one of our members, the BC Healthy Living Alliance, 78 per cent of British Columbians think it is important political leaders in B.C. address poverty with a provincial poverty reduction plan with clear targets and timelines,” the coalition noted in a press release. “Clearly, the public is ready for political leadership on this issue.

So we are asking what our political parties will do if they win the provincial election in May.” The coalition has written to the Liberals, NDP, Conservatives and the Green Party to challenge them to meet the call for a poverty reduction plan and will be posting an assessment of their responses and their platforms a few weeks before the election.

The call for a legislated poverty reduction plan with targets and timelines is endorsed by over 375 organizations province-

wide, representing over 300,000 British Columbians.

On Tuesday the coalition hosted a webinar to mobilize hundreds of supporters around the province to take the call to their local candidates in their communities.

The fact is that the basic necessities of housing and food are out of reach to too many in the province. Over half a million British Columbians live below the poverty line and 87,000 of those are children.

This has long-term health implications. Lack of healthy food can lead to poor growth and development in children, poor school performance, and increased illness and susceptibility to disease for people of all ages.

Most poor people in B.C. have a job. Those who are on social assistance are working hard too – welfare and disability rates are so low that people are constantly struggling to meet their basic needs.

More and more people are facing high rents, unaffordable child care, inaccessible education and poor health.

Paying for the negative effects of poverty costs much more than dealing with it directly.

Ryan Oliver and the Cookers in concert tonight Former lakecity resident Ryan Oliver, with his band The Cookers, will be in concert at the Studio Theatre tonight, April 12 and tomorrow night, April 13. Tickets are available at the Guitar Seller and the Open Book.

Juno-nominated, and now Toronto based saxophonist Oliver has taught, recorded and performed with various musicians and groups throughout the world.

After graduation in Williams Lake he honed his craft on the West Coast before moving to Amsterdam, Toronto and then New York.

Since returning to Toronto, Oliver has maintained a busy schedule as one of the city’s in demand saxophonists.

The Cookers was formed in 2009 in an effort for the musicians to share their passion for swing, traditional jazz music with Canadian audiences and, along the way, developed a catalogue of original music and a unique Canadian sound, states the group’s biography.

The band’s freshman album, The Cookers, Volume 1, was warmly received by Canada’s

Ryan Oliver on saxophone playing with jazz legend Victor Lewis on drums.

Raised in Williams Lake Oliver is becoming an international star on the jazz music circuit and will be home in Williams Lake for two concerts tonight and tomorrow night at the Studio Theatre at Glendale Elementary School.

Keeping a car’s interior clean Ask anyone who has taken an extended road trip what a car looks like post-trip and visions of food stains, trash and other not-so-pretty things might soon appear. But it doesn’t always take a road trip to create a messy interior. Ordinary dayto-day living can lead to stains, scratches, clutter and more.

Although many interior messes can be cleaned up, taking a proactive approach to interior cleanliness can save time and frustration. These are a few ways to keep the car clean and minimize damage.

Detail the interior There are many products on the market that can be applied to the dashboard and other trims around the car. For the most part, these are leather conditioning treatments or vinyl coatings that help prevent cracking or drying out of the materials. They also impart a nice shine onto the trimwork, and alleviate finger smudges and other eye sores.

Using a shop vacuum is a smart way to clean the carpeting and mats, as well as catch crumbs and other dirt that can end up staining the seats of the car. A shop vac has more horsepower than a regular vacuum and will draw dirt out more easily.

If you have leather seats, use a mild soap and water solution and dampen a cloth to wipe down the seats.

The same solution can be used on the plastic components, such as cup holders and storage areas. Use a dry cloth to dry and buff out

any streaks. There are leather seat protector products available, and upholstered seats can be protected with a scotch guard-type product.

Create a dirt barrier Carpeted mats are meant to make the car interior appear sleek and refined. Yet many times these mats can get soiled quite quickly.

A good investment is to purchase vinyl or plastic mats that have a raised perimeter that will trap any dirt or liquid (like melted snow) on the mat. Then the mats can be easily removed and hosed off.

Along the same lines, car seat covers can be bought that will serve as a barrier between dirt, crumbs, fur, and anything else that would normally become embedded in the upholstery. There are kick mats that can be placed on the rear side of front seats. This way, if kids in the back put their feet up on the seats or have a tendency of kicking, they won’t dirty the seats.

If your car has a trunk, consider lining it with an impermeable material that can absorb spills and catch dirt. With the spring planting season just

around the corner, you don’t want the topsoil or fertilizer spilling into the carpet-lined trunk making a mess.

For SUV drivers, a mat or liner can be installed in the cargo area.

Check with your dealership or an aftermarket retailer if there are products specifically designed for this purpose.

Otherwise a blanket, absorbent sheet, etc., can be used in a pinch.

Clean off before driving The warm-weather season is one full of frolicking in parks or seaside. Be sure to stomp shoes clean of sand and dirt before entering the car. Pay special attention to the cleanliness of pets and children’s feet before entering the car.

Get a trash receptacle In a perfect world, there would be no eating and drinking in a car and no chance for food and beverages to spill. However, many people find from time to time they need a snack or a refreshment in the car.

Avoid a mess by having a small bag or trash can to collect the remnants of the meal

so they don’t end up on the floor or seats. Look for drinks with straws and covers for easier drinkability in the car.

Only allow foods that won’t cause major stains if spilled, such as water and dry snacks.

Reel Paddling Film Festival resumes Tuesday night KRISTA LIEBE Special to The Tribune The Reel Paddling Film Festival has been rescheduled to resume on Tuesday, April 16 at the Gibraltar Room.

Doors open at 6:30 and the film starts at 7 p.m.

The festival came to an abrubt halt toward the end of the first film during the fes-

tival last week when the projection equipment failed.

The equipment has been repaired and the festival will resume this Tuesday where it left off.

Those who didn’t have tickets for the original night and want to attend will miss the first film but will get in for a reduced fee.

Bowl for Kids Sake runs this weekend Williams Lake’s Big Brothers Big Sisters annual Bowl for Kids Sake happens this Saturday and Sunday at Cariboo Bowling Lanes.

This year’s theme, in celebration of BBBS 100th centennial in Canada, will be a Big Birthday Bash.

“We’re hoping participants take that theme and use their imaginations to come up with some crazy costumes in any way they choose,” said WLBBBS executive director Lorraine Levitt.

Geoff Bourdon and Wendel Blois are sure to add some excitement to the event and keep participants on their toes and having fun throughout.

“There will be lots of prizes given out through each time frame for things like first strike, first gutter ball and this year we’re going to have trivia questions based on our theme, so things that happened in 1913,” Levitt said.

“The first person to run up and answer that will get to pick a prize off our prize table.”

Bowl for Kids Sake gets underway Saturday at 4 p.m., with more sessions following at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, bowling gets underway at 1 p.m.

Teams must have registered prior to the weekend to participate.

“It’s quite lively and exciting,” Levitt said.

“The first game will be bowling straight, and then the second game will be cosmic bowling.

“During the cosmic bowling we’ll have people bowling blindfolded, bowling between their legs, bowling while they sing O’Canada and do-

Don’t Let the Art is Your Business Sounds of Life conference set for May Go Unheard

Art is Your Business is the title of a conference coming up in May that is designed to help artists and creative business people to build and grow their businesses.

“We grow stronger by coming together as a community, sharing our wisdom and supporting each other,” says event spokesperson Beth Holden. “This rings true in all of society but especially for the creative sector.”

The workshop will be offered from May 3 to 5 by Island Mountain Arts Society, in partnership with The Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society and The Station House Gallery.

“This weekend event is composed of hands on workshops, discussion groups and lectures designed to equip creative entrepreneurs with tools to enhance and grow their businesses,” says Holden.

“Just in time for the busy summer season these workshops will get participants on track with

marketing tools, a better sense of accounting and book keeping and strong goals for their own businesses.

Networking with local and regional creative entrepreneurs can lead to strong marketing partnerships, build community and enhance business.”

Art is Your Business will be held in various locations in downtown Williams Lake.

An opening reception at the Station House Gallery will kick off the conference at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3.

Saturday and Sunday the bulk of the workshops will be held at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre next to City Hall.

Breakfasts and lunches will be provided.

Bill Usher, a successful musician with years of entrepreneurial practice in both the for profit and the not for profit sector will be among the presenters. He has toured Canada and been presenting enriched artistic

experiences for all ages since 1977.

A key player in building musical legions such as Sharon, Lois and Bram, he also worked for the Ontario Arts Council and has been instrumental in the reformation of the Golden Arts Council creating Kicking Horse Culture (kickinghourseculture.ca) His skills include marketing, branding, grant writing, community outreach and much more.

Amy Quarry will help participants make marketing work for them.

“You may recognize her name from her successful marketing business, AdBoom as well as Small Town Love, a project that promotes community and small businesses in and around Quesnel,” Holden says.

From banjo building to singing, teaching and more Jason and Pharis Romero, of Horsefly will talk about diversifying business.

Kelsey, recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal; Angela Sommers, who runs an extremely successful small music business; Paul Crawford, curator of the Penticton Art Gallery; Julie Fowler, one of the key members of the ArtsWells Festival; and Justin Calof president of the highly successful Cariboo MountainConsortium.

Island Mountain Arts has delivered successful programming for more than 35 years.

Edna Ann (Moore) Irvine 1922 ~ 2013 It is with great sadness that the family of Edna announce her peaceful passing on April 6, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family. Edna was born December 12, 1922 at Peavine Ranch - her parents were Thomas Moore and Agnes (Tresierra) Moore. Her grandparents were Pablo Tresierra and Hortonse (Isnardy) Tresierra & John Moore and Annie (Chairo) Moore. Edna’s children have always maintained “they were related to everyone”.

Edna was predeceased by her husband Dal. She is survived by sons Tom and Chris & daughters Sharon Tucker, Cindy Martin and Linda Guenette. She had two devoted son-in-laws Grant Martin and Rene Guenette.

One daughter-in-law Darlene that has spent the past 45 years proving she was a good choice for “Tommy” Edna’s first born. Edna was a proud grandmother to Natalie, Stacey, Jill, Blake, Darcey and Brock, whom have all pursued successful professional careers. She had ten great grandchildren.

Dal & Edna were some of the original founders of the curling rink. A few avid curlers each purchased two rocks and had to haul them to the rink for games. Edna was made a lifetime member of the Williams Lake Curling Club, and it was here that she make lifelong friends.

The family would like to thank Doris, Joan, Charlene, Angela and Cherie that contributed to Edna’s care.

Edna is probably sipping a cold frosty beer, kibitzing with her family and friends that encouraged her to meet them in the “Angel Saloon”.
