local man charged with attempted murder after the arrow shooting of his father is expected to plead guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated assault in two weeks, according to his lawyer. Marvin Antoniuk — represented by lawyer Jeffrey Arndt — appeared via video link Tuesday before Duncan court Judge Evan Blake. April 23 was booked for the potential resolution of the case arising from the Jan. 27 bow shooting of Antoniuk’s father, Marvin Antoniuk Sr. First a judge must hear all the facts of Antoniuk’s case, including a pre-sentencing assessment that has shown the former Cowichan secondary football player is fit to stand trial. “He appreciates he did wrong, and is prepared to pay his debt to society, and move on,” Arndt said. The arrow narrowly missed Antoniuk Sr.’s Marvin Antoniuk Jr. is escorted heart. He’s since recovered from the courthouse Tuesday and was released from Vic- by sheriff Jim Ingham. toria hospital, Arndt said, noting his client remains in custody at Wilkinson Road jail. Antoniuk Jr., 48, apparently has what his lawyer called “a blind spot” about the happenings of Jan. 27 at the family home along Maple Bay Road. “He doesn’t recall any circumstances of the event,” said Arndt, noting alcohol and crack cocaine are believed to have been involved. He’s also ordering an independent psychological assessment of his client, a former Crofton mill worker turned contractor. “There was a great deal of domestic violence in the family, and (Antoniuk) stood up for his siblings,” said Arndt. Antoniuk Jr. was beaten after the arrow episode, said Arndt, giving the accused a broken nose and broken teeth. It’s unknown who, if anyone, used a blood-smeared socket-pry bar tool — found on scene at 1658 Maple Bay Road — on Antoniuk. After the planned April 23 action, Arndt expected the case to be adjourned for about 10 weeks toward sentencing. An aggravated assault conviction can carry a 14year maximum sentence, he said, noting he believed Crown could seek a sentence of four to six years.
