The communities of the West Boundary are kicking off the Canadian Cancer Society’s April daffodil campaign and joining communities across the country to unite in the fight against cancer. According to local Canadian Cancer Society organizers Anna Anderson and Kim Lindseth, volunteer canvassers are still needed for the communities of Rock Creek and Greenwood. This week more than 3,300 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer. A cancer diagnosis can be daunting, which is why the Canadian Cancer Society is asking everyone to join the fight against

cancer and wear a daffodil pin in April to show their support of those living with cancer. Greenwood Mayor Nipper Kettle joined Anderson and Lindseth on the steps of City Hall to mark the beginning of the annual campaign. Kettle said that his family, like so many others, has been touched by cancer. His brother lost a two-year fight with leukemia when he was only seven years old, his father also was diagnosed with cancer as was his sister – who is currently waging her own fight against breast cancer. “I know how rough a time it can be for those stricken by cancer to go through the treatment,” Kettle said. “Cancer doesn’t care about colour, or age, or gender. But when my brother died, the chance of survival was only 10 per cent, and now that has

been turned around and it is now at 90 per cent.” “We’ve all been touched by cancer. In fact, two in five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetimes,” Lindseth added. “By wearing a daffodil pin in April and especially on Daffodil Day, which is on April 27, Canadians can show them they are not alone in their fight.” Daffodil pins will be available for a small donation at local stores throughout the West Boundary during the month of April. If you would like to be a volunteer canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society in the West Boundary please contact Anderson at 250-4492208 or Lindseth at 250-449-2869. Canvassing starts on April 1, cumulating on Daffodil Day on April 27.
