Mary Wilson is looking for volunteers to lead “Jane’s Walks,” to show off hidden features of their neighbourhood, like this dead-end lane in the West End that often hosts lane parties and spirited games of pick-up basketball.

Mary Wilson is a passionate pedestrian. She also loves to talk about New Westminster. She’s found a way to do both at the same time, and she’s rounding up some others to do it too. Recently, the West End resident and 12th Street neighbourhood booster saw a blurb in a Vancouver community newspaper about a
Jane’s Walk being held there. She learned they are walks named after urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs, and they’re held the first weekend in May to coincide with Jacobs’ birthday. Each walk celebrates urban neighbourhoods and allows residents to discover little gems in their city. “Bingo,” Wilson said to herself. “This would work in New Westminster.” So she signed herself up as a local organizer for the event which was held in 85 cities and 17 countries in 2012.
In addition to leading a group on her regular jaunt to the library, which is different going and returning, on Saturday, May 4 starting at 10:30 a.m., Dale Darychuk will lead another group through Glenbrook Ravine Walk at noon the next day. Both have been posted at www.janeswalk.net. Another three, including one in Queensborough, are being prepared to be posted and she’s working on arranging a couple of others. “I hope to have at least six. Eight would be fabulous.” With sidewalk mosaics in

many areas of the city, places like Westminster Pier Park and Queen’s Park, and neighbourhoods like Sapperton, “there’s lots of potential in New Westminster,” she said. Her walking trips usually include unique routes that avoid having to eat exhaust or be deafened by traffic noise. “Come with me and I’ll show you why I enjoy my walk,” said Wilson. “We do back lanes, and I’ll show you interesting stuff. You’ll see things in there and you’ll realize why I like my walk.” Please see DISCOVERING, A3

A man pretending to be a FedEx courier is believed to be responsible for a break-in at a Quayside Drive condo complex. On March 11, a resident allowed a man claiming to be a FedEx courier into the building. Although he had a FedEx envelope, he did not produce identification and wasn’t wearing a uniform. A break-in to one of the building’s residences was discovered later in the day and NWPD investigators think he was the culprit. FedEx confirmed the man was not one of its employees. He is described as Caucasian, five-foot-10 with a heavy build, dark hair just covering the ears, dark pants, brown or black leather jacket and carrying a satchel. Anyone with information on this incident or the suspect is asked to call Const. Tomas Graham at 604-525-5411 or Crimestoppers at 1-800222.8477.
