First Saturdays in Kimberley Numerous, cross-promoted events on one day C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

First Saturdays are a concept that you need to wrap your brain around, but once you do, it’s simple. A number of people in Kimberley have been getting together to discuss and brainstorm First Saturdays, and it’s a go, says Carol Fergus from the Arts Council. The idea is to try to get as many events happening in Kimberley on the first Saturday of every month (from May to October) as possible. Then the events cross promote each other, build on each other, and hopefully people attending one event head to check out another. “We called a meeting to see if there was interest in trying to develop First Saturdays and the first meeting was a tremendous success,” Fergus said. “There was a lot of interest, a lot of people and a lot of letters of support.” The concept of tying events, many of them arts and culture based, together has been tried by other communities and it has been successful.

The Fort Steele Spring Camp was held this week, Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 22. The children have taken part in learning what happens at Fort Steele on a daily basis. They’ve been learning how to cook, bake, blacksmith, livestock duties, carpentry work (where they have made their own bird houses), and now they are experts in their sewing techniques thanks to the dress shop ladies. Local artist Marilyn Oliver came out to guide the children with some small projects. Their week ended with some acting in the Wildhorse Theatre. These are just some of the activities the children have been taking part in. Fort Steele has oneday Pro-D camps coming up in April and May, so please call for more information at 250-417-6000.

Syrian refugees in need of assistance Kimberley Rotary asking for donations C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

One of Kimberley’s most recognizable volunteer faces is that of Graham Mann. Mann keeps himself busy with the Kimberley Community Development Society and Rotary, along with many other causes.

Mann has had extraordinary success in raising money for one cause — Rotary ShelterBox. Kimberley residents have been some of the highest donors per capita for this worthy project, with Mann keeping the need in the forefront of peoples’ minds as much as he can. A ShelterBox is a tent containing everything needed to keep 10 people alive in a crisis, from bedding to cooking utensils to water purification equipment. Rotary International has ShelterBox teams

ready to roll any time a crisis appears — from earthquakes to flooding, to political situations — anything that displaces people. And when the Rotary International team rolls into a crisis area, Rotarians like Mann turn to their communities to ask for support. Right now the crisis is Syria. As the civil war continues in that country, refugees are spilling over its borders into Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. Mann says one million people have now

fled Syria. “That’s the number of Syrian people waiting for conflict to end in their homeland,” he said. “It’s the number of people who no longer sleep under their own roofs, who may not know where they will sleep tonight. The number of people wondering when they can return home, that is, if their home is still standing when that time comes.
