LCSS’s grads paying it forward with donation from fashion show On Friday, March 15 Lake Cowichan Secondary School grad students strutted the catwalk in front of a crowd of about 150 people to raise funds for Curt Knippelberg — who grew up in Lake Cowichan — and his fight against an unusual medical affliction called a pineal cyst and for their dry grad. Those plans changed after hearing Knippelberg speak. Grad Sydney Allan, one of the coordinators, said “The grads are honored to help Curt as he grew up in Lake Cowichan and is such a community minded person.” All the proceeds from the evening’s event were donated to Knippelberg’s plight which was about $500 — but the grand total won’t be known until after spring break when everything can be tallied. To be added to
the total are the proceeds from the concession. Tim Hortons donated coffee and donuts for the grads to sell. Knillelberg gave a shoutout to the grads on his Facebook page saying “Big love going out to all the LCSS students organizing and taking part in the Grad Fashion Show. Was a great time guys. “Wishing everyone the best in their grad year.” Seventeen of the LCSS grads modelled clothes from local retail stores Fit for a Princess and Scarlett’s Boutique and from Duncan’s Martin’s Men’s Wear, The Garment District and others. The show covered an entire gamut of entertainment with music by teachers Shannon Steignenger and Adrian Achurch and casual attire to evening wear. More photos on page 9.

In a partnership between the provincial government and the B.C. Medical Association, a new incentive was announced last week in a bid to recruit physicians to set up practices in 17 rural communities in the province. The Rural Physicians for B.C. Incentive provides each eligible physician with a one-time payment of $100,000 when they commit to a three year term in one of the designated rural communities. The four communities on Vancouver Island that were selected to be part of this incentive program are Galiano Island, Port Alberni, Tofino and lastly, Port Hardy which was allocated two positions due to their dire need. “We applaud the communities that were chosen,” said Laurie John- Laurie Johnson, chair of son, chair of the Choose the Choose Cowichan Cowichan Lake Com- Lake Committee, says they mittee (CCLC), a local are hopeful in recruiting a group dedicated to find- second doctor for the area. ing more doctors who will practice in Lake Cowichan. “They obviously needed it more than we did.” Physicians selected for the incentive will receive $50,000 when they begin working in their new community and the balance of $50,000 after one year of service. If the full three year commitment is not completed, the entire sum must be repaid. The program is part of a province wide drive to ensure that all B.C. citizens will have access to a family physician by the year 2015. In a recent Gazette MP’s Report, Nanaimo/Cowichan Member of Parliament, Jean Crowder pointed out that some five million Canadians do not have a family doctor. With the bad news came some incredibly good news as the CCLC announced that on Wednesday, March 13, a doctor had been found who will relocate his practice to Lake Cowichan. Dr. Chris Kibonge has accepted a position at the Brookside Medical Clinic effective July 1, 2013. Continued on page 2
