“Everything is good when it’s paired up with water from Greenwood.” – Jill Klein Rone Greenwood’s municipal water has once again made the grade at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Festival as Canada’s Smallest City took bronze last weekend in the Best Tasting Municipal Water category. After winning Gold in 2012, the city bottled some of the water and labeled it as Greenwood Gold. This year their water also won a silver medal in the purified category, coming in behind Rain Fresh Oxygen Purified from Garland, Texas. Emporia, Kansas, took gold in the Best Tasting Municipal Water challenge. Independence, MO came second, Greenwood third, with a tie for fourth between Clearbrook, B.C. and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Los Angeles). Following them was Keremeos. So three of the top six municipal waters came from BC. Greenwood’s water won Bronze in 2010 as well. “We are finishing well so that says a lot about our water quality,” Greenwood Mayor Nipper Kettle told The Times on Monday during a phone interview. “Three out of the four years we’ve been up there on the podium, and two of the waters that placed below us this year have been previous gold medal winners as well.” Greenwood Gold was one of eight entries in the People’s Choice for Package Design. “We got a pretty good return on our invest-

ment in terms of publicity and getting Greenwood on the world stage,” said Kettle. “It has generated a lot of talk about Greenwood.” “It is great to see Greenwood there at the top – I expect that will be a recurring occasion through the years,” said Jill Klein Rone, staff producer for the event. This was the 23rd annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting, the oldest and largest water tasting competition in the world. Watermaster Arthur von Wiesenberger, noted expert and author from Santa Barbara, California, directs the challenge of evaluating a product where tastelessness is the most sought after quality. The judges spent hours tasting and selecting from among waters sourced in 21 states and 10 foreign countries. This year there were 32 municipal waters entered from a dozen states, Canada, South Korea and Thailand. The judges included representatives from various regional and national media including television and online magazines. They were instructed
by von Wiesenberger to look, sniff and taste each water under guidelines similar to those in a wine tasting. The waters were rated for each attribute including appearance (it should be clear, or slightly opaque for glacial waters), aroma (there should be none), taste (it should taste clean), mouth feel (it should feel light), aftertaste (it should leave you thirsty for more). Waters were tasted in four separate flights over two days. The Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting is staged the final weekend in February each year in the popular historic West Virginia resort town named for the mineral waters that George Washington first visited in 1748. Today, the area around the springs is Berkeley Springs State Park in the heart of town. Waters are openly displayed in pools and people coming to take the waters home with them keep a public pump busy. The annual event is produced by Travel Berkeley Springs, the local convention and visitor’s bureau. They can be found online at berkeleysprings.com/water
