Together the Kimberley Novice Nitros and Kimberley Novice Dynamiters hosted a successful 12 team tournament this past weekend, February 8-10, 2013. Teams from around the East Kootenay as well as Lethbridge and Bow Valley showed off their talent on the ice and had a ton of fun doing it. After tight round robin play in three different divisions Friday and Saturday, the undefeated Cranbrook Snap On and Cranbrook Kal Tire teams advanced to one semi-final game while the second semi-final saw the undefeated Kimberley Nitros face off against the Kimberley Dynamiters who battled back from a Friday night loss to claim the single wildcard spot. After a close semi-final game, it was the Dynamiters advancing to the final and pulling out a 7-4 win against Snap On to take home the gold medal.

New bylaw

When smoke gets in your eyes Bylaw to govern emissions from wood stoves C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca

Kimberley City Council gave the Wood-Burning Appliance Emissions Control Bylaw

its first three readings on Tuesday night, with a plan to adopt it at the next regular Council meeting in two weeks. The purpose of the bylaw, explained Coun. Don McCormick, is to enhance air quality and give Council the tools to monitor and enforce sub-standard burning of substances such as garbage or wet wood.

The bylaw also establishes a minimum standard of replacement of wood stoves, as well as supports the ongoing wood stove exchange program. The bylaw has been in the works for quite some time, but has been delayed by the issue of outdoor wood furnaces. Advocates have attended Council

to argue in favour of the outdoor appliances but this bylaw does not allow for them. “The reality is preservation of healthy air,” said Coun. Darryl Oakley. “These outdoor furnaces are not designed for municipalities, they are designed for acreages. It’s a good bylaw.”

Funding announcements from the Gas Tax General Strategic Priorities Fund are flowing into communities this week — but not into Kimberley. The City of Kimberley’s application for funding to assist “We are planning with the $4.25 milfor the next phase, lion Mark Creek flume rehabilitation but given the project has been rerecent jected. A brief letter to announcement, the City from the we have to Chair of the fund’s management comconsider whether mittee, Gary Mait should go on the cIsaac, offered no explanation as to back burner” why the City’s application was Mayor Ron turned down, other McRae than there were far more applications than available funds. What went wrong is something Mayor Ron McRae would like to know. “We were not successful with the gas tax application,” McRae said at City Council on Tuesday evening. “A couple of grants have been announced in the Elk Valley. We have to go back and find out where this thing went sideways.” McRae said the City would ask for a full recounting of why the flume project application was not successful. “We need to know why,” he said. Columbia River Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald is not shy about offering his theory on the recent funding announcements. He says there have been few, if any, announcements of any significance in this riding. “Right now you have Liberal MLAs trying to save their seats,” he said. “The flume should have been funded. There’s $26 million for advertising yet no money to support an infrastructure project like the flume. See FUNDS, page 4
