Family Day Winter Market Taking advantage of one of the season’s busiest ski weekends C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca
The Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce is planning to fill the Kimberley Conference Centre with booths promoting Kimberley businesses, selling products and highlighting tourism products on Sunday, February 17, 2013. That particular weekend is Family Day in both Alberta and Saskatchewan and it is estimated there could be up to 6,000 people on the ski hill that
weekend. While there is potential that some people will venture downtown, with much of the accommodation on the mountain many will stay on the hill all weekend. So if the skiers are staying on the mountain, why not bring Kimberley business to them? In conjunction with the Conference Centre and Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, the Chamber will host the Winter Market on February 17 from noon until 5 p.m. and they are looking for local businesses to sign up. “Part of the rationale is to promote our Summer activities,” said Chamber President Darren Close in a press release.

Kimberley Nordic Club Jackrabbit Program celebrated World Snow Day this last Sunday, January 20th, 2013, with their Annual Bavarian Relay Ski Tournament, sponsored by Cross Country Canada. Kids from 4 to 14 years old partook in this event. Sunshine, blue skies, and great snow helped make this a great event. Kids from our neighbouring Jackrabbit Programs in Invermere and Fernie also joined us in the celebrations. There were 2 x 2 person relay events, a Big Air Competition, a Treasure Hunt, and a 100 meter dash event. Fun costumes were worn by everyone. The Kimberley Jackrabbit Program has been growing steadily every year, thanks to these fun activities for the kids. Thanks to Cross Country Canada for their support, to the volunteer leaders and parents for making this event a success again.
Kimberley has a very active cross-country skiing community, and as can be seen in the photo on this page, they start them young. Once youngsters have graduated the Jackrabbit program, many move into racing. With good coaching and off-season dryland
training, Kimberley’s skiers have been doing very well on the Kootenay Cup circuit this season. So well in fact that there is hope that Kimberley may win the Cup this year. They will have home-track advantage as the final Teck Kootenay Cup races will be held at the Kimberley Nordic Club on February 16 and 17, 2013.
