Roger Powell, a member of Cranbrook Search and Rescue, poses in the Kimberley Search and Rescue Sno-cat at the Kimberley Alpine Resort on January 12. The impressive vehicle was brought up to the ski hill to show off to the public for Avalanche Awareness Day.
Scientists are still holding out hope for the endangered Kootenay white sturgeon after a three-year U.S. experiment failed to draw the fish upstream to where they could successfully spawn. The largest freshwater fish in North America, white sturgeon can grow to 12 feet in length and weigh up to 1,000 pounds in their 100-year life span. With an estimated 1,000 wild adult fish remaining, the Kootenay white sturgeon was listed as endangered in Canada in 2003, after nine years on the U.S. endangered list. Wild sturgeon are found in Montana, Idaho and B.C. and they spawn downstream of Montana’s Kootenai Falls and the Libby, Montana dam on Koocanusa reservoir.

Dirtbag Fest returns to Kimberley in March Artists, activists, pranksters and adventurers get together for Dirtbag Fest C AROLYN GR ANT editor@dailybulletin.ca
Dirbag Festival is back. After a major success and complete sellout of McKim Theatre in 2011, the festival has moved from fall
to early spring. The festival goes Friday, March 8, 2013 and Saturday, March 9, 2013. Dirtbag features the best of local photographers and storytellers, celebrating the ‘dirtbag’ lifestyle. One of the organizers, Alison Ko, says that the Fest will be showcasing more local film makers than ever this time The concept is explained on the dirtbag website. “Dirtbag Festival is the collection of unlikely stories, told by dirtbags living in the rebel realms of the wild spaces they call Colin Wallace’s winning photo from 2011.
home. It is a community of artists, activists, pranksters, and adventurers who carry us through the dark winters by sharing their story through film, photos, and word.” Dirtbag asks the questions — What awes & inspires you? What keeps you going? What’s your place on earth? What’s your story? The festival will have a slightly different look this year with a Spoken Word event at Centre 64.
