A 62-year-old Kamloops man who was under a driving ban when he allegedly struck and killed a woman with his truck seven weeks ago has been caught driving again. Kamloops RCMP received a tip the man — who is still prohibited from driving — had driven to Lake City Casino on Victoria Street downtown in a truck registered to a family member, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned. Mounties staked out the truck, then conducted a traffic stop soon after the man drove away shortly after midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The truck was impounded for seven days and the driver has been issued a ticket under provincial motor-vehicle restrictions for driving while prohibited. Because the new charge is not a Criminal Code offence, Learned said, the driver cannot be identified.

Chamber moving downtown After 73 years in the city’s Visitor Centre, the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce is headed downtown. The chamber is moving to new offices at 615 Victoria St., as Tourism Kamloops takes over the reigns of the centre. Though the chamber has run the touristinformation centre since 1939, chamber executive director Deb McClelland said the organization had been looking to hand the operation over to Tourism Kamloops. “Tourism Kamloops was new back in the day when we were making those plans and, now, obviously, because they are the tourism-marketing association of record here in Kamloops, we just thought it was a better fit for them,” she said.

McClelland said downtown is a good fit for the chamber, as 85 per cent of its members operate in that area. A grand opening at the new location is planned for February. The Visitor Centre is funded through a mix of city contributions and funds from the provincial and federal governments. The chamber has also subsidized the centre in the past, but has severed its financial ties with the move. Mayor Peter Milobar said the city will step up its annual contribution to the centre by about $10,000 for a total of about $123,000 in funding. Tourism Kamloops’ yearly operating grant of $250,000 is not affected by the Visitor Centre handover. Tourism Kamloops CEO Lee Morris said

her organization will use some of its marketing budget — which primarily comes from hotel-tax revenues — to expand the centre’s hours of service during peak months. Morris said Tourism Kamloops is also planning to renovate the centre. Improvements may include touchpads outside the building, which travellers can use to access information during off-hours. “There’s a lot of new ideas floating around, but I think the key is to modernize the look and the feel of the Visitors Centre on the inside,” Morris said. Renovations will likely start in late February, Morris said, with the goal to have work completed before the May long weekend.

Vigilance urged after random stabbing

New transit signs to cost city $29,000

Police are urging residents of a North Kamloops neighbourhood to be “extra vigilant” while walking in the area after a woman was attacked at random on Friday, Jan. 11, and stabbed twice. Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Fran Bethell said the 25-year-old victim was walking with her oneyear-old son in the area of Southill Street near the Brocklehurst Cooper’s store at about 9 p.m. when she was approached by a man. Police believe the man came up quickly behind the woman, who yelled at him to leave. The woman told police he tried unsuccessfully to steal her purse. The victim felt a pain during the struggle, Bethell said, but did not notice until she arrived home that she had been stabbed twice in the arm. She took a cab to Royal Inland Hospital, where staff alerted police. Bethell said the woman has since been released from hospital. “Police are suggesting that the community be extra cautious and extra vigilant when walking in the area at night,” Bethell said, urging people to walk in groups, carry cellphones and stay in well-lit areas. The suspect is described as a stocky man standing five-foot-four and wearing all black. The victim said he was wearing a mask over his face. Designated accident Damage to a house and garage door on Bossert Avenue is estimated at $10,000 — all the result of a designated driver. Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said officers were called to a home in the 2200block of the Brocklehurst street at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, after neighbours heard a crash and saw a Jeep Cherokee leaving the area. It had crashed into a garage door, hitting the house and damaging bushes. Learned said police took the information from the homeowner and left, only to be called back

after an 18-year-old had gone to the house and told the homeowner he had caused the damage. The young man said he was acting as a designated driver for two passengers in a car he had not driven before. Unfamiliar with it, his foot got stuck on the gas pedal and, after hitting the garage, he panicked and fled for home. The teen told his parents what had happened and was sent back to confess. Learned said the teen will face charges of failing to remain at the scene and driving against licence restrictions.

While indexing the city’s bus information on Google Maps was touted as a cheap way to make tripplanning easier, getting that same information onto the streets will take a bit more cash. In February, Kamloops will replace its old bus stop signs with new B.C. Transit-branded models. The switchover will cost about $43,000, with the city picking up $29,000 of the cost and B.C. Transit covering the rest. When B.C. Transit uploaded bus-stop data to Google’s mapping service (available online at google. ca/transit), each stop in the city was assigned an identification number. However, city transit planner Erin Felker noted, that number isn’t on any of the city’s old bus signs and there is no way for riders to double-check that they have arrived at the right stop. The new signs will have that number, as well as information on which bus routes run past the stop and whether they are wheelchair accessible. Felker said the city’s old signs aren’t always legible — or correct. “There’s a couple of bus stops that say No. 3 Aberdeen, back when the No. 3 used to go from Westsyde all the way to Aberdeen,” she said. “We knew we were going to get new bus signs, so we haven’t updated those.” B.C. Transit rolled out new signage for bus stops several years ago, but Felker said the city has held off on installing in because it was waiting for the Google transitmapping service to hit the community first. Now that it’s here, Felker said, the new signs should go up in February.

It’s a distinction that has provincial antismoking groups embarrassed. At the end of May, B.C. will become the only province or territory in Canada where you can buy a pack of cigarettes while filling a prescription. In Canada’s other remaining holdout, Manitoba, a ban on selling tobacco products in pharmacies comes into effect on May 31. “We’re the last ones,” said Scott McDonald, president and CEO of the B.C. Lung Association, which is calling for Victoria to enact similar legislation. “It’s a little embarrassing. “We used to be leaders in tobacco control initiatives and this one, I think, is fairly impor-

tant. It’s a symbolic thing as much as anything.” A survey of Kamloops pharmacies by KTW found only a few actually take advantage of the ability to sell cigarettes. In all cases, the stores are chain operations that sell a range of other products — from digital cameras to groceries — in addition to providing pharmacy services. Pharmacy-only outlets in Kamloops do not sell cigarettes. Even among the chain stores, availability isn’t consistent. In the case of Shoppers Drug Mart, its stores in Valleyview and on the North Shore still offer tobacco products, but its Sahali location does not. Tammy Smitham, vice-president of communications for Shoppers Drug Mart,

said that’s because the company is trying to phase out its tobacco sales entirely. “We’re committed to improving the health and well-being of Canadians, so I think, obviously, the risks to people’s health associated with smoking have been proven,” she told KTW. But, she said, the company hasn’t pulled cigarettes off its shelves entirely because of its financial responsibility to shareholders. “Taking that into mind, what we’ve done in B.C. is any new stores that we build we do not put tobacco in those stores,” Smitham said. “But, in the existing stores right now, we continue to have tobacco there.” McDonald said the Kamloops experience is typical. In most cases, he said, cigarettes and

pharmacies are only found together in bigbox stores. However, even if tobacco and medication are sold on different sides of the store, McDonald said he thinks the symbolism is off. “I think it’s a pretty obvious place where tobacco shouldn’t be sold. “A pharmacy is a place where people go to get well. It contradicts my thinking at least, that tobacco is available in the pharmacy,” he said. And, McDonald added, one less place to buy cigarettes makes it that much more inconvenient to smoke.

“It’s trouble. The more trouble it is, the more likely you are to quit.” However, while his organization, along with the B.C. and Yukon Heart and Stroke Foundation, are making a renewed call for legislation, McDonald doesn’t expect any movement from the B.C. government. “This government, what they say is they want business to make their own decisions about things like this. “So, they don’t want to impose legislation on business,” he said. “But if you don’t impose, people would still be smoking walking around in the mall.”

Kinder Morgan ups expansion plans By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

Kinder Morgan’s expansion plans are getting bigger. The company announced Jan. 10 it plans to expand its Trans Mountain pipeline to carry 890,000 barrels per day, up from the 750,000 barrels per day (BPD) expansion it had initially proposed. The original Trans Mountain line, now almost 60 years old, can carry up to 300,000 BPD. Greg Toth, project manager for the expansion, said the new, higher volume is similar to what the company had originally envisioned when it first announced its expansion plans. When a few shippers dropped off the project, Kinder Morgan reduced the scope of the expansion to 750,000 BPD. Since then, Toth said the company has had “continual interest” from other Canadian oil producers and market-

ers, which prompted it to open the project back up to new shippers. “It really is representative of the growing demand for outlets for Western Canada sedimentary basin crews and the growing production from the oil sands, and the need to access alternative markets,” he said. However, Toth said he doesn’t think the project is benefitting from the uncertainty surrounding other pipeline projects, such as Enbridge’s controversial Northern Gateway line. “We really don’t think there’s a linkage there. Our project stands alone in that we already had the commercial support to proceed with the project as it was,” he said. “It just really represents additional support for our proposed expansion.” To accommodate the extra barrels, the size of the new pipeline would increase from 30 to 36 inches.

Two new positions on the council will also be recommended, one for graduate students and one representing lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or queer students.

Ajax the subject of presentation at TRU Those wishing to know more about how the environmental-assessment process impacts the proposed KGHM-Ajax mine can attend a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 17, at Thompson Rivers University. Organized by the TRU Human Rights Committee and the TRU Faculty Association, the meeting will feature representatives of the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, including Scott Bailey, executive project director of the agency. The meeting takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Clock Tower Building’s Alumni Theatre. There will be time for questions and answers following the presentation. The Ajax project would see an open-pit copper and gold mine constructed just south of Aberdeen, partially within Kamloops’ city limits, with an anticipated 23-year operating span.

Other resolutions address the responsibilities of the representatives, and clarification on executive responsibilities, committee membership and qualifications for advocacy representatives. Wondering about God since the beginning of his time

HE CATHOLICS WANT you to Come Home as part of the religion’s massive advertising blitz designed to lure back those of the faith who have wandered away from the church. The Mormons have long funded an effective radio advertising campaign reminding us all that family is about time. And, of course, signboards outside of churches from coast to coast to coast vie for the attention of passersby with solemn and witty words alike. But, it was in a motel room in icecold Lillooet during a hockey-tournament weekend that an 11-year-old boy with a mind as inquisitive as can be decided to start to try to figure out all this God stuff. Raised in a non-religious home and peppering dad with questions of creation since the beginning of his time, my son spied the Bible in the drawer (placed there, as always, by the Gideons), set aside his novel and opened the Good Book. And, starting with Genesis, he read. And read. And read. And repeated a paragraph here. And asked a question there. And wondered about literal and figurative context. And, finally, decided to attempt to finish the Old Testament by the end of the year as his one and only New Year’s resolution. No chance, I said, noting it is an extremely difficult book to read. Nevertheless, the boy will plug away and has various editions of the Bible at home to peruse in his quest. The question of why we are here and from where we came is eternal; I

MUSINGS ponder those queries as often today as I did as a child, as a teenager, as a first-time father. The questions are daunting; the possible answers beyond frightening. The question from my kids is thrown at me now and then: Do you believe in God? My answer is incomplete, but honest: Sometimes I think I do; sometimes I think I don’t. I have long believed each of us must determine what we believe with respect to our purpose for being here and all to which that relates. It’s fine to baptize your baby. It’s fine to have your kid attend Sunday school and instil in him your beliefs, religious or otherwise. However, it is that brain inside that head of that little person that will ultimately decide the belief system. It may be guided by a parent’s beliefs; it may have nothing to do with years of teachings. Whether my kids grow up to be atheists or seminary students doesn’t matter. What matters is they make the decision based on what they believe, not what I perceive to be the way to enlightenment.

As I told my boy, one can be an atheist, agnostic or, in my case, simply confused and still read the Bible, study scripture and debate the book as a literal life guide versus an entertaining collection of allegories. Regardless of how you approach the tome, it’s all a learning experience and there is no downside to adding more data to that grey matter between your ears. So, as the boy tackles more of the very fine print that has baffled centuries of mankind, he will, in all likelihood, find himself vacillating between believing and doubting, which, when stripped of all else, is what constitutes the scales of life. We either believe or we don’t — be it God’s existence, a friend’s promise, a mate’s vow, a child’s explanation. When I was a child, I briefly took part in a few Bible-study sessions arranged by a devout aunt. I had one question that vexed me: If God exists, who or what created God? Her answer was to not answer by explaining our minds could not handle the explanation, lest they explode. To me, though, that is the crucial question that applies even to those who side with life emanating from a random Big Bang event: Who or what created the ingredients that led to the Big Bang? Maybe the boy will decipher something to explain all that as he delves deeper into the pages of the sacred text. God knows (or not) his innocent mind has as good a chance as any to solve this eternal mystery. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

There are many complaints about the justice system in Canada. These almost always concern perceived lack of justice when a sentence is handed down in a courtroom. There is often much more than meets the eye when it comes to why a certain sentence has been imposed. However, there are cases — and there are two fresh ones occurring right now in Kamloops — in which it is incumbent for the state to incarcerate people for the safety of others. On Nov. 21, Valerie Brook was killed while walking in a downtown crosswalk. The alleged driver the truck that hit her is a 62-year-old man who was banned from driving at the time of the accident. Last week, police arrested this same man for driving while prohibited — in the same area in which Brook was killed. The man was issued yet another ticket (under the Motor Vehicle Act, not the Criminal Code) and remains free to drive again today, or tomorrow, or the next day. Meanwhile, a trial continues today. It involves allegations David Jennings sexually assaulted a boy. This would be the same Jennings who was the subject in 2011 of a warning from police about an untreated, high-risk sex offender living in Kamloops. This would be the same Jennings who was the subject of a similar warning in Kamloops in 1998. Is there a point at which rehabilitation of certain people becomes a moot point and the justice system decides to err on the side of caution by placing the protection of the innocent above the rights of those who commit crimes? If there exists such a point, these two men passed it long ago and should not be allowed to roam free. This will not happen, of course, which serves as a salient example as to why so many ordinary Canadians are so frustrated with some aspects of their criminaljustice system.

Idle No More? Great idea — so much can be done Editor: I am writing in response to the Idle No More coverage that has cropped up in the news headlines. Wow! So, maybe we will see some activity like siding getting nailed back up and yards and surrounding mega-acreages free of old cars and trailers. Maybe we’ll see less garbage in the gullies. Perhaps there will crop up some gardens and fruit trees so little idlers can have some chores instead of idling on the iPods or whatever new device comes along. Do you suppose there could be a chicken house, barn or some pig pens? Lots of work, though. How about putting the blame where it belongs? If you are aware of abuse in the past, you surely have learned not to replicate it. Why live in the shadow of churches and buildings that were dens of inequity? Get rid of them. Teach youngsters right from wrong. Natives are just like everyone else who immigrated to this nation and, with a few more years, there will be no distinct race here because this is what time does. The fact one person has a different background does not stop anyone from mixing blood, as has been the case for centuries. No race is exempt from this. Proof of land settlement by anyone thousands of years ago is non-existent and, if some signs are left from centuries past, who’s to say where they came from? Everyone comes from somewhere. We don’t grow like grass from the ground. How did Canada become settled by the first arrivals? Ice bridges, tsunamis and other acts of nature. Thousands of tsunamis occurred through unknown ages and they didn’t just bring rubbish to the shores. Some countries lost plenty of folks who clung to debris that washed ashore — men, women, animals, weeds, trees, you name it. The evidence is in the makeup and appearance of the people who claim to have first rights. They came from the north over the ice bridges and from the south, east and west. This is how Canada became inhabited and it took countless years after that last ice age for the land to be sustainable. Idle No More protesters should think about what they do have and do something to help themselves. If they feel the need to continually link their problems with their treatment by religious organizations, make them pay the bills. We did not abuse them and we must not continually be smeared worldwide as such, so it is in this option they should do exactly as they say and idle no more. Ida Cumming Kamloops

Blazer bears arrive stuffed with emotion for recipients Editor: It is a joyous occasion when Kamloops Blazer fans celebrate their first goal of the season by tossing teddy bears onto the ice at Interior Savings Centre. While emotions run high at that moment, those who later receive the Blazer teddy bears experience a wide range of emotions, from youngsters to the very old. I had the privilege of attending the Pine Grove Care Centre’s Christmas party, at which “Elvis” performed. As he sang, he knelt in front of a wheelchairbound lady and tucked

a teddy bear into her arms. Having sat listless before, her eyes widened with joy and a smile spread across her face. She clutched the teddy bear throughout the concert. Other emotions people displayed when receiving Blazer bears were amusement, laughter and surprise. This would not have been possible without the generosity of the thousands of Kamloops Blazer fans and the Blazer Booster Club coordinators. Pine Grove residents are meant to receive the teddy bears but, truly,

Murder trial to start in fall Three weeks have been set aside for the trial of Jaipreet Singh Toor, who faces a second-degree murder charge in connection to the death of his father. The trial is scheduled to start on Sept. 23. Toor, 44, was arrested on March 20, 2012, after police responded to a call at 12:20 p.m. from someone in a house at 1189 13th St. in North Kamloops, where the body of 79-year-old Harsewak Singh Toor was found outside. Neighbours told KTW at the time the son had mental-health issues and had often been seen in the neighbourhood exhibiting strange behaviour.

City man dies in snowmobiling mishap A 61 year-old Kamloops man is dead after a snowmobiling incident near Valemount on Jan. 8. The man, who

McDonald had been operating the vehicle in a clearing between the treeline and the roadway. He was transferred to the Valemount Health Unit, where he was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts failed.

Kamloops RCMP say the 53 year-old driver of the truck was making a left turn in the parking lot when the man suddenly came into view near the front of his truck. Before the driver could stop, he had hit the man with his mirror, which was sheered right off the truck. Police say the pedestrian reported not seeing the truck until it hit him.

The driver remained at the scene and offered assistance to the other man — who had a cut on his head and complained of chest and neck pain. He was taken to Royal Inland Hospital, where it was confirmed he had suffered no injuries beyond the head wound. The driver of the truck was issued a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Surrey sleuth helps Pooch problems to Mounties track down keep hounding city hall stolen snowmobile By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER

When a Surrey man vacationing in Sun Peaks became the victim of a thief, he became a digital detective, scouring the web in an effort that led to the return of his $7,000 snowmobile and the arrest of two people believed to have stolen it. Kamloops Rural RCMP say the man was on holidays at the ski resort 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops and had enjoyed an afternoon of snowmobiling on Jan. 3. He had left on his trailer another machine, a 2009 Skidoo Summit XP, valued at $7,000. When he returned from his snowmobile outing, the skidoo and trailer he had left behind were gone. The trailer was found days later on a back road in nearby Louis Creek. The victim decided to check several online sales sites and came across his Summit being sold on kijiji.com for half its value. The owner started an email conversation with the seller and, at the same time, contacted police. He eventually arranged to meet the seller in Nakusp to buy the Summit. The seller said he was a two-hour drive away. Kamloops Rural Mounties, working with their counterparts in the Nakusp and Slocan Valley detachments, went to work, creating a plan to intercept the delivery.

On Wednesday, Jan. 9, officers from the two RCMP Kootenay detachments stopped a Honda CRV with two Kamloops residents inside — a 30-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman. The pair was hauling the stolen Skidoo Summit XP on a trailer that may also have been stolen. The couple claimed they had bought the machine a week earlier in Sun Peaks for 25 per cent of its value, a story that raised the eyebrows of Mounties. Why? Well, it turns out the man driving the Honda that was hauling the stolen Skidoo is the same man who, a week earlier, had tried to sell skis stolen from Sun Peaks in late December. The owner of the skis told police, who set up a meeting with the man in a parking lot in Kelowna and seized the skis, as well as two laptop computers. The man remains under investigation for that incident and declined to comment on the similarities of his sale of stolen skis via kijiji the week earlier, the sale of a stolen snow machine on the same website and the use of stolen licence plates on his Honda. He is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Nakusp. Police say the man was using an iPhone application to access a different gmail account each time he was selling items on kijiji.

The city won’t be giving out any more free three-dog variances, but that doesn’t mean a poochfree agenda in 2013. At its first meeting of the year, council will consider an appeal from a woman whose request to keep a third, as-yet-unpurchased dog was previously denied, and look at amending its dog responsibility and control bylaw. If passed, the amendment would create a permanent exemption to Kamloops’ two-dog-per-unit policy for registered service and guide dogs. According to a staff report, the change comes after a local resident requested permission from the city to acquire a new service dog. The resident already owns two registered personal-assistance dogs, each of which has been retired. Registered service dogs are already exempt from licensing fees. Under the exemption, dog owners would have to prove their guide dogs are registered by an accredited agency and provide the type of care necessary for a person they reside with. Staff say the bylaw change is meant to be a personal exemption and would not apply to businesses that might keep several personal-assistance dogs to cover a variety of conditions. www.naturesfare.com

Former Rocket excelling at SAIT It’s fitting NorKam secondary graduate Cora Sutton is pursuing a career in civil engineering. The SAIT Trojans rookie defenceman has proven her game on the ice is structurally sound. Sutton is second in scoring on the Calgarybased Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) squad, with three goals and eight points after 12 games. Trojan bench boss Terry Larson is thrilled with her progression. “Defensively, you can’t ask for much more from Cora,” Larson said. “She battles hard in our zone and barely ever loses those battles. “She doesn’t get caught out of position. She doesn’t use her stick, she uses her body. She does all the little things right.” Sutton honed her skills with the Kelownabased ThompsonOkanagan Rockets, a powerhouse in the B.C. Female midget AAA ranks.

Driving to and from the Little Apple for practices and games is no small task for parents and players alike. Sutton’s dedication to the game has not gone unnoticed at SAIT. “She’s always in position to be on the ‘D’ side,” Larson said. “If you’re chasing those players, you’re going to get those stick penalties like hooking and tripping. You’re putting yourself in position to get called for penalties. She’s always in the right position, so she doesn’t get called.” Sutton, who scored in a 4-2 loss to the Red Deer College Queens on Friday, Jan 11, has racked up just two penalty minutes this season. SAIT (3-8-0-1) is tied for third in the four-team ACAC. The 5-foot-7 rearguard also knows what she wants away from the rink. “You can either go with a municipal or a construction stream and my goal is to go the construction route

— working on high rises and big projects, eventually as a project manager. I want to be the boss,” Sutton said with a laugh. “Even in high school, I loved design as well, so I see myself working pretty closely with architects on big projects.” Larson and his staff rated Sutton — a provincial all star — as one of the top young female blue liners in B.C., so they were elated when she committed to the Trojans in July. Cadets shoot to podium Biathlon team members from 204 Black Maria Air Cadet Squadron competed at a regional competition held at Telemark Nordic Centre in West Kelowna earlier this month. The Kamloops crew squared off against other cadets from the Okanagan region in a test of crosscountry skiing and marksmanship. All six team members reached the podium. Chase Jervis won bronze in the 12- to 14-yearold category; in the 14- to 16-year-old division, Christine Hammond and Josh Jervis claimed silver and Leia Hoot and Sully Fagan earned bronze; and Joel Kerfoot won silver in the 16- to 18-year-old division. Hammond, Kerfoot and Josh Jervis qualified to represent 204 Black Maria at the provincial championship, slated to run on Feb. 2 at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island. Biathlon requires participants to ski six kilometres in four 1.5-kilometre legs. Between each leg, participants take five shots at targets spaced 50 metres away using a 0.22-caliber rifle. A time penalty is assigned to each missed target and is added to the athlete’s overall time. Cadets is open to youth between the ages of 12 and 18 and provides a variety of fun and challenging activities, which promote development of valuable life and work skills, such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship. The 204 Black Maria Air Cadets meet on Monday nights at the McArthur Island Boys and Girls Club, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Blazers trade wins with Cougars at CN Centre The Kamloops Blazers split a pair of Western Hockey League games with the Cougars in Prince George on the weekend. Sam Grist scored the overtime winner in a 2-1 win for the Blazers at the CN Centre on Saturday, Jan. 12. Dylan Willick, a Prince George product, also scored for the Blue and Orange in support of netminder Cole Cheveldave, who made 26 saves. Acquiring the perfect piece of art Kamloops artist Karla Pearce says great care has to be taken in commissioning a piece of art — from selecting the artist to completion

E KNOW THAT ART plays an important role in our society and culture, but art can also be intensely personal. Think of a lifeless room with bare walls and how that would make you feel sitting in it. Now, imagine that same room filled with beautiful, oneof-a-kind artwork. Art transforms and can personalize the spaces where we work and live. It can improve quality of life. While art may be creative expression for those who make it, it fulfills the same role for those who choose to own and display it. Art extends beyond merely beautifying a space in that it actually helps to define and frame the owner, reflecting aspects of what it is that makes that person uniquely individual. Most people who collect art wander through galleries looking for that right piece that speaks to them or will fill their room just right. Sometimes the piece will jump out and say, “I am the one.” Sometimes people will look for that right painting for months or years and never find it. One way to get that original piece of art that is going to fit your creative sensibilities and work perfectly in a space is to commission an artist to create a special one-of-a-kind piece of art just for you. Historically, this was the only way artwork was created. The idea of artists free thinking and painting for

The Creative EDGE themselves is relatively recent. So, how do you commission that perfect piece of art? First of all, you will need to find an artist. Look for one that has been at it for a while and has a good reputation and working space. It might be nice to hire that family relative — but, will you get what you want in the long run? Pick an artist who is producing work that you like and identify with. There is no point in hiring an abstract expressionist to do a photo realistic portraiture or vice versa. Form a clear idea of what it is that you want. Think about the size, dimensions, colours and subject matter. The better prepared you are, the better the process will be. Even bring the artist some colour samples. Remember — you are dealing with a highly trained visual person. Set a budget. The Toyota Corolla is like the ‘Energizer bunny’— it just keeps going and going. One of the best-selling cars in Canada year after year, the Canadian-built Corolla is now in its 11th generation and still going strong after 40 years on the market. In fact, Toyota Canada just released its latest sales figures to show that 2,371 Corollas were sold in December, and a total of 40,906 for all of 2012— an increase of 11.6 per cent over the year before and 43 per cent of all Toyota car sales for the year. Not bad for a car with the current generation nearing the end of its shelf life and the 12th generation set to launch as a 2014 model. So why still such strong sales numbers now for the Corolla? There are many reasons, but styling is probably not a major one. In a compact market with ‘lookers’ like the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3 in the mix, the 2013 Corolla still maintains the conservative styling that the model has always featured. But what the Corolla does offer in spades is affordability, reliability and fuel efficiency. And, although there are a great many impressive new entries in the segment, the Corolla continues to satisfy thousands of dedicated followers in this country. It starts at $15,450 for the base CE trim level that even offers a moonroof package ($2,960), which Toyota says is the lowest-priced car with a moonroof in the compact segment. My tester was the above-mentioned CE with moonroof package and four-speed automatic transmission ($1,000) that priced out at $19,410 ($21,010.20 with all taxes and freight and PDI). What you get for that price is a solid, reliable compact car that is no longer all that compact. In fact, it is fairly spacious inside although rear seat legroom

is at a premium when the front seats are in their rearmost positions. The ride is comfortable and the cabin quiet except under hard acceleration. Power to the front wheels comes from a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 132 hp and 128 lb/ft of torque. This provides decent acceleration, but not a terribly exciting driving experience. Natural Resources Canada fuel economy ratings for the Corolla automatic are 7.8/5.7/6.8 L/100 km city/highway/combined and 7.4/5.6/6.6 for the manual. All Corollas are offered with the choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The base CE has features such as tilt/telescoping steering column, 60/40 split folding rear seat, outside temperature gauge, dual vanity mirrors, 12-volt accessory power outlet, dual power adjustable/heated exterior mirrors and lots more. Available option bundles include the Convenience Package that adds steering wheel audio controls, air conditioning, upgraded audio system with Bluetooth, and power door locks with keyless entry. Move up to the Enhanced Convenience Package and you add heated front seats, power windows and cruise control. The Moonroof Package adds all these features plus the moonroof. The Corolla S starts at $20,605 and offers more sporty features including a full skirt package, unique scuff plates, leatherwrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls, sport seats with special fabric, fog lamps and a rear spoiler. A Moonroof Package or Technology and Leather Package are available for the Corolla S. At the top of the ladder is the Corolla LE, starting at $21,170 that has 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, metallic dash accents, steering wheel controls, cruise control, keyless entry, power

moonroof and fog lamps. In the dash is a 6.1-inch display screen for the new-for-this-year six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth. Optional is an Upgrade Package with eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, automatic climate control, automatic headlamp system and smart key with pushbutton start. A Premium Package features an upgraded audio system with navigation and wood grain interior trim. The cabin of the CE-trimmed Corolla is fairly basic with easy-touse controls. X See COROLLA B7

The two-tone colour scheme is attractive and the seats proved to be comfortable, even after our four-hour drive to visit friends during the holiday season. Trunk capacity of 348 litres (12.3 cu ft) is average for this segment. We had the car loaded up for a four-day stay at our friends’ home and ended up folding down the rear seat for even more cargo room. On the highway, once up to speed the Corolla cabin is quiet and the ride is soft and cushy.

We didn’t push the car into corners at all during our test period, but from previous experience in earlier Corollas, I know that this isn’t the car’s strength. I could easily live with the Corolla on a day-to-day basis, but there are so many great vehicles in this entry-level class today, that the choice would be a difficult one if I were in the market. But, no matter what you decide on, be sure to put the Corolla on your shopping list because even after all these years, it still has a lot to offer in the way of basic, affordable transportation.

World’s oldest Ford returns home to kick off 150th birthday party 1903 Model A part of year-long celebration of Henry Ford’s birth A key part of Ford Motor Company’s heritage returns home as a Model A built in 1903 is again with the Ford family, kicking off the yearlong celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of company founder Henry Ford. Considered the oldest surviving Ford vehicle, the 1903 Model A was unveiled in mid-December to Ford Motor Company employees by executive chairman Bill Ford, who purchased the vehicle at an auction in October. “The timing was perfect to bring this key part of Ford heritage back to the family as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of my great-grandfather’s birth and his vision to improve people’s lives by making cars affordable for the average family,” he said. “His vision to build cars that are reasonably priced, reliable and efficient still resonates and defines our vision today as well.” Henry Ford’s 150th legacy will be celebrated in 2013 through a variety of events. Some of these include tours, educational programming, dramatic re-enactments, lectures, integration and special events at auto shows and more. The Model A returning home

played a pivotal role in Ford Motor Company history. In July 1903, Henry Ford faced a daunting situation. The company’s cash balance stood at less than $250. A muchneeded cash infusion arrived on July 13, 1903 — one full payment and two deposits totaling $1,320 for three Model A cars kept Ford Motor Company afloat. The car pictured is a red 1903 Model A Rear Entry Tonneau. It is believed to be car No. 3, chassis No. 30, and the lone survivor of the group of three Model A cars sold on that day. “The Model A helped keep our company going during a difficult time and enabled my great-grandfather to continue pursuing his vision of putting the world on wheels,” Ford said. “We look forward to carrying that same spirit of innovation forward as we develop new technologies for safer, cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.” A dedicated website, henryford150.com, has also been launched and it includes an interactive timeline of Ford’s life, tours, a calendar of the planned 2013 events and information about efforts to preserve Henry Ford’s heritage.

Heavy snow no problem for city’s budget Though there was plenty of snow on the ground near the end of 2012, and more has arrived with 2013, the City of Kamloops is on track with its snowremoval budget. Kristen Meersman, capital-projects manager for the city, said Kamloops spent between 95 and 99 per cent of its $1.7-million snow removal budget in 2012. The budget is based on the calendar year and resets on Jan. 1. Meersman said the city typically stays within its budget on snow removal, though there have been hiccups in the past. In 2008, dumps of snow over Christmas, Boxing Day and the weekend following had the city paying out more than $90,000 in overtime alone, putting it over the budget for the year. While 2013 also started out snowy, with some areas of the city

Mary Irene Hardaker Mary Irene Hardaker of Kamloops ops passed away peacefully on Januaryy 9th, 2013 at 97 years of age. Mary was born on the family homestead, Stony Plain, Alberta, November 8th, 1915. She settled in North Kamloops with her parents Edward and Christina Willie some 90 years ago. Mary is survived by her family - Ted and Lee, Trent and Jill, Graeme and d Veki and her sister Ruth Norberg. Memories of Auntie Mary will long be held in the hearts of her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Milner, her sisters Alice and Esther and her brothers George and Jack. Mary was a born organizer, which led her down many paths. As a young woman, she was employed by the Hudson’s Bay Company and was extremely proud of her achievement in becoming the Manageress of the grocery department. Her business experience continued when she joined her husband Milner in opening one of the ﬁrst businesses in North Kamloops, Mil’s Men’s Wear, in 1948. She served her community for many years through Kinettes, K-39 and Rotary and supported Milner through his years as Alderman. Mary was a member of the Kamloops Golf Club, the Kamloops Fish and Game Association, the Kamloops Curling Club and also served as Charter President of the North Kamloops Curling Club. Fishing, camping, gardening, friends and family were special to her. The Pinegrove Care Centre was mom’s chosen home for the past few years. She was reunited with many friends and was graced with making many new ones as she became part of another family. The thoughtful and compassionate care she received at Pinegrove and from Dr. Schumacher and Dr. Wiedrick is appreciated. A Memorial Service will take place at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 17, 2013 in the Kamloops Funeral Home. In lieu of ﬂowers a memorial donation may be made to a charity of your choice. Adam Ziebart Adam Ziebart, aged 77 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2013 with family at his side. Adam is lovingly remembered by his children Michelle, David (Paula), Marty, Skylark, Kevin (Abie) and Jackie, his wife Janet, grandchildren Kiernan, Nathan, Justin, Rachel, Moshi and Arabella, as well as many friends and relatives. Adam came to Canada from Germany in 1953 as a journeyman carpenter, but quickly embarked on a career in the restaurant business. In the early 80s, he transitioned to a position that brought him much fulfilment at St. Ann’s Academy. Adam loved cooking, gardening, household projects, helping others, taking time for prayer and especially spending time with his family. Viewing / visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:00 pm on Wednesday, January 16 at Kamloops Funeral Home, 285 Fortune Drive. Prayers will be recited that evening at 7:00 pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral. He will also be missed by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Budge was predeceased by his parents August and d Yvonne (Billie) Feller, sisters Betty Flewin and Sharon Brewer. Budge was born on May 19th, 1939 in Albert Park, Alberta. His family moved to Nelson, BC in 1943. After attending high school he worked with the Department of Highways surveying. In 1959 he started his machinist apprenticeship with Taylor Pearson Carson and moved to Kamloops in 1959, finishing his apprenticeship in 1962. In July 1962 Budge started working at Balco Mill as a machinist/mechanic. Budge remained there for 38 years until his retirement in 2001. Budge and Cheryl called Heffley Creek home for 42 years. Budge’s love for his community showed in the effort he put back into it. He was a member of the Heffley Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the Heffley Creek Community Club. He was on the Heffley Creek Waterworks for 33 years and was one of the founding members of the Heffley Creek Gun Club. One of Budge and Cheryl’s passions was black powder shooting along with their many friends within it. Budge looked forward to his daily visits at 1:45pm to the gazebo at the Heffley Creek store where the Oldtimers of Heffley Creek gathered for coffee and discussions on how to solve the world’s problems. Budge had a lifelong love of the outdoors and passed this onto his children through the countless fishing, snowmobiling, camping and hunting trips. Budge and Cheryl celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May 2012. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 1:00pm in the Colombo Hall, 814 Lorne St, Kamloops.
