There are many ongoing efforts to improve literacy rates in the Boundary under the direction of the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) and a huge opportunity to develop capacity at the local community level in the West Boundary is an upcoming course providing 12 hours of free tutor training for volunteer adult tutors. Tutors will learn to provide one-to-one tutoring to adults in various literacy needs – from reading, writing and computer use. The twoday course will be scheduled for early February based on the best schedule for those interested in attending. Speaking of the adult tutoring program in Grand Forks, Community Literacy Co-ordinator Sheila Dobie said, “We’ve got some really long-term tutor-learner relationships that are really beautiful and are making a huge difference in these people’s lives. “There are opportunities for working with adults around literacy in the West Boundary,” said Dobie. “Especially around computers, basic readers and even reading to the elderly are all pieces that people could do as volunteer adult tutors.” Those wanting more information can find contact numbers at the bottom of this article. CBAL also sponsors opportunities for West Boundary residents to take part in computer workshops through the Greenwood and Midway public libraries. “Anyone who wants a basic computer work-

Midway resident Bob Hatton, who held the position of village CAO when Feist first joined the office staff in June of 1990, also attended the meeting as he wanted to be present at her swearing in.
