Privates Victor Helgren, right, and Tayler O’Farrell, left, weren’t sure where their privates were as they dipped into the frigid waters of the Columbia River at the behest of their commanding officer, Cpl. Chris Buckley. The three will be on hand for the annual Polar Bear Swim hosted by the 44th Engineer Squadron on Jan. 1 in Gyro Park.

It’s the perfect cure for what will be ailing you on New Year’s Day. Take one near freezing cold river, nearly 150 scantily clad Greater Trail residents, and plunge them into the water for a few seconds. The annual Polar Bear Swim is heading into its 27th year with military precision, and the host 44th Engineer Squadron will be lining the trenches on New Year’s Day to help effect the cure. Cpl. Chris Buckley will be in the seven degree Celsius water for 10 minutes on Jan. 1 and was inviting anyone who has dipped, has thought about dipping, or hasn’t plied the waters of the Columbia River in January to partake in the annual polar bear swim. Nearly 150 people showed up last year for a dip, said Buckley, with almost 500 on the shore huddled near the fire. The water will be above freezing, he said, with temperatures expected to be around seven degrees C, up one degree from last year. “If you can jump into Kootenay Lake in August, you can handle the Columbia River for a few minutes in January,” Buckley said. use in order for the Beaver Falls system to accommodate the demand of both communities in light of the recent pipe break. 11 – Addison Oberg is crowned Miss Trail 2012 with Ashley Horrill selected as princess in the annual Trail Ambassador pageant at the Charles Bailey Theatre. 13 – Silver City Days wraps up after an estimated 40,000 people soak up the sunshine and the festivities. 25 – Craig Horsland is pre-

sented with the Beaver Valley Citizen of the Year Award at a ceremony to open Beaver Valley May Days. 28 – City of Trail crews worked through Monday night and into Tuesday to repair a water break at the intersection of Victoria Street and Bay Avenue. The main water supply in West Trail suffered from two breaks in the pipeline and affected more than three blocks of businesses in the downtown core. “We don’t know what caused it, it’s just that infrastructure fails over time,” said Public Works manager Larry Abenante.
